Vince Young says he's done as an NFL quarterback. (USATSI) Vince Young says he's done as an NFL quarterback. (USATSI)

Ever since Vince Young blew up with his relationship with then-Titans coach Jeff Fisher in 2010, he's had a difficult time staying relevant in the NFL. The two-time Pro Bowler who led Tennessee to a 30-17 record as a starting quarterback spent an uninspiring 2011 season as Michael Vick's backup in Philadelphia, and after that, Young spent time in camp with Buffalo, Green Bay and, most recently, Cleveland.

All along, Young, when he was out of work, wondered why he wasn't getting the opportunities he thought he deserved.

Apparently, he's stopped hoping and told KXAN in Austin that he considers himself retired from the NFL.

“It's definitely official I think in my book,” Young said Saturday. “Unless we get a great opportunity, something guaranteed…other than that I've started moving forward in some things.

“I love the NFL, will love the game always but I'm kind of moving forward and moving on right now.”

Now, Young reportedly will go to work for his alma mater, the University of Texas, in some kind of ambassador-type role. He said Saturday he and the school are working through the details of his employment.

“If football doesn't work out for me, (the University of Texas) has a great job for me,” Young said in April. “Just letting you know what (UT) has going on, especially helping kids get scholarships and recognizing things like that. Whatever it is, I just want to support the university.”

But Young admitted the past five years have been difficult, particularly after he and Fisher fractured their relationship when Fisher benched Young and Young walked out on the team after a game in 2010.

“I had my ups and downs. I made the mistake of getting into it with my coach and that kind of hurt me a whole lot. When you go to different teams, they already have a bad perception of you. When that's out there, there's nothing you can do,” Young said.

Young said he hasn't officially filed retirement papers, but it sounds like he doesn't have any more plans to play.

Browns RB Terrance West: 'I want to be the starter.' Ben Tate is very confident he will start

I feel like I'm writing about Cleveland a lot lately, which strikes me as odd but so be it.Ben Tate was brought in during the offseason to be the Browns' starting running back, and Tate fully expects that's just what he'll be. He was given $2.5 million guaranteed in his two-year deal -- a nice chunk of change for a back these days -- and with four seasons under his belt, he is one of the most veteran players in the group. But upstart rookie Terrance West isn't going to simply accept a backup role."I want to play. I want to be the starter, and I'm going to practice like a starter," West told the Akron Beacon Journal on Thursday. That sounds like a challenge. Mr. Tate, your response?"I'm not worried about [competition] because I know when I'm on my game mdash; I respect every running back here — but there's no one that can really touch me or that's close to what I do," Tate said. "So honestly, I mean I'm not worried really about that."[The media] may see it like that, but when I know what I'm doing, what I'm supposed to do, there's nobody in that room [of running backs] that scares me. I'm just honest."

Oh, let's get it on!It's funny, because Tate is also quoted in the article as saying that running backs often lose their job when they underestimate their competition, and then he goes on to sound like a man underestimating his competition.West is climbing up fantasy draft boards quickly, although I'm afraid it's getting a little out of control -- I saw someone compare him to Alfred Morris earlier today. Still, he should be drafted as a popular RB4 right now while Tate is more of a low-end RB2. West could definitely make a substantial jump up if he indeed outperforms Tate in training camp. The Browns are going to be a run-heavy team, and Tate has a fairly extensive injury history in his short career. He's already missed some OTAs due to minor nicks.

Tampa Bay's players seem excited about the direction of the team without Greg Schiano in charge. (USATSI) Tampa Bay's players seem excited about the direction of the team without Greg Schiano in charge. (USATSI)

More NFL offseason: League minicamp dates | Latest news, notes

When the Buccaneers fired coach Raheem Morris, one explanation for the move was that the team members had gotten too comfortable in their environment. Morris, it was said, was too much of a players' coach and hadn't installed the correct amount of discipline, which partially explained why the team fell to a 4-12 record in 2011 after going 10-6 the previous season.

Thus, Tampa Bay hired Greg Schiano, who was going to take a more disciplined approach. An 11-21 record later and, after the second coaching change since 2012, the Buccaneers' pendulum has swung back the other way with Lovie Smith now in charge.

Defensive tackle Gerald McCoy says that's a good thing.

"It's been a while since you've seen guys smile this much, have this much fun," McCoy said, via the Buccaneers official website (H/T to Bucsnation.com). "We were a tight-knit group last year, that's how we got through all that circus. However, this group is really tight-knit and having a lot of fun really throughout the whole building. I mean, it's just a completely different feel around the building."

One of the major criticisms of the Schiano era was that he was a college coach treating NFL players like college players. Understandably, that approach wasn't so popular among the players who believed they were leaving behind a college mentality after they, you know, left college.

Said McCoy; "We're professional. Trust us to be professionals."

That's what Smith seemingly is doing. Of course, he's had plenty of experience at the pro game, leading the Bears from 2004-12. To be fair, Schiano hadn't ever been a pro football head coach before he was hired before the 2012 season.

And sure, we were a little surprised when the Buccaneers fired Schiano after only two seasons. But if the team wanted a change in the organization's atmosphere, hiring Smith -- at least, to this point -- seems to be the answer that the Buccaneers players have been seeking.

Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe is in the best shape of his life

Yep, it's about that time of year when stories such as this one bloom."Right now I'm about 210 (pounds), and I'm moving good, and I feel like I'm in the best shape of my life," Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe told the Kansas City Star on Thursday. "The way [OTAs have] been going, it's only going to get better."Head coach Andy Reid said: "I think Dwayne came back in phenomenal shape, that's one thing. It looks like it out here. He's really moving around well. Look forward to getting to camp where it actually counts, but he's in the right frame of mind."

It's nice to hear after Bowe has shown up to workouts in previous years in some form far away from tip-top. Bowe toned up with the help of a nutritionist and a personal trainer, and he said he's looking forward to being more of a leader on and off the field this year ... it's all very standard fare for mid-June. Bowe frustrated fantasy owners the past couple of seasons after posting some big numbers in 2010 and 2011 and failing to follow up. This year, you can't be frustrated if you draft Bowe. First of all, you're not drafting as anything more than a WR4, and expectations should be tamped down as long as risk-averse Alex Smith is under center. The Chiefs are trying to get him to throw down the field more often, but it's not as if Smith is going to turn into Jay Cutler overnight. I'll be surprised if Bowe reaches 900 yards this season. He turns 30 in August.

Today News: BRAZIL BEAT: A Fluminense fan in a Flamengo shop?

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - Jonathan Arguero is a passionate fan of Buenos Aires club River Plate, which means he despises the city's other big team - archrival Boca Juniors.

He couldn't believe what he saw the other day in Rio, where he's arrived to watch Sunday's World Cup match between Argentina and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Browsing in a shop run by Rio club Flamengo, he spotted a fan of archrival Fluminense wearing - of all things - a Fluminense shirt.

''If a Boca fan arrived in a River Plate store wearing a Boca shirt, he might not leave alive,'' Arguero said. ''I am not exaggerating. The animosity is very great. I'm using measured words here.''

Brazil loves soccer, though attendance is poor for club matches, averaging about 15,000 - less than Major League Soccer in the U.S. One reason is that newly built and remodeled stadiums are pricing out the working-class fans. Tickets for a club match at Maracana can start at $40-50.

About 50,000 Argentines are expected in Rio for Sunday's match - most without tickets.

Some of them could be members of Argentina's hooligan gangs, called ''Barras Bravas'' in Spanish. Brazilian and Argentine police are trying to stop them at the border. Back home, almost every Argentine club match is tinged with some violence, in or around the stadium.

Police trying to control a rowdy crowd of Argentine fans used pepper spray to keep them from blocking a main road running in front of Rio's Copacabana beach Saturday.

SAO PAULO (AP) - A group of about three dozen journalists from Iran are on their own World Cup road trip - following the team around the country on a bus organized by the Iranian football federation. After the team's final training session in Sao Paulo, the traveling media circus loaded onto the bus to pick up their gear at the hotel before the 400-kilometer journey south to Curitiba.

It's clear that the shared adventure - they all also flew in from Teheran together - had bonded the gang. Some immediately took off their shoes, placing their feet atop the seats ahead. Others leaned back in their chairs, laughing. Every few minutes someone broke into song in Farsi.

''We are a big family,'' said Shervin Gilani, who freelances for the Teheran Times and the Mehr News Agency. ''We all hope that Iran will advance. But also all know that will be a big surprise.''

FINDING FRIENDS

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - OK, so we all know yellow and green is good at the World Cup in Brazil. Blue and white stripes? Whoa. Not so much.

One brave cab driver was proudly sporting Argentina's team shirt as he whizzed through the Saturday morning traffic in downtown Rio de Janeiro. On every side of him there were quizzical looks, normally followed by a hoot or a stern shout in response to the colors of Brazil's fierce South American rival. Sometimes a wave of a hand. No, no, no!

Then, just as it felt he was all alone, a car pulled up next to him full of fellow supporters of the country of Lionel Messi. Their hoot was accompanied by cheers and thumbs-up this time as they pressed their blue and white Argentina flag up against the window. Seems you'll always find some friends at the World Cup.

CROATIA'S CRITICISM

SALVADOR, Brazil (AP) - Croatian players just won't forgive Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura, who awarded Brazil a controversial penalty in the World Cup opener with the score 1-1.

Now, they are taking a gibe at his English. Or rather, his alleged lack of knowledge of the language.

''During the match I asked him something in English, he replied in Japanese,'' Croatia defender Vedran Corluka said.

''It is unbelievable that throughout the game, he communicated with us in Japanese,'' Corluka said. ''For me it is unthinkable that a World Cup opener is refereed by a person who does not speak English or any other major international language.''

Croatia lost 3-1 against Brazil on Thursday after a series of questionable decisions by Nishimura.

That left the Croats furious.

''After this game, it would be better if Brazil was immediately given the World Cup trophy and the rest of us go home,'' Corluka said. ''It is now clear that no one can beat Brazil at this tournament.''

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - As World Cup selfies go, a group of noisy Brazilian kids got some real good ones as they crowded Robin van Persie and snapped away on their cellphones at a relaxed Dutch team training session.

The red-shirted youngsters were allowed out onto the sideline of the practice field in Rio de Janeiro to watch the team of the moment work out Saturday, a day after its 5-1 hammering of reigning champion Spain thrilled World Cup watchers.

The children applauded and whooped from a few feet away as Van Persie, Arjen Robben and others came out for the session at local club Flamengo's practice facility in a southern neighborhood of Rio. That was good enough.

They got much more when Van Persie walked over, said ''hi'' and held up his hand for a high five with each of them. Out came the phones as the youngsters jubilantly snapped away and jostled for position to take a shot of themselves with the Manchester United striker.

Van Persie scored twice Friday in Salvador as the Netherlands crushed Spain in a stunning result on the second day of the World Cup. He and other players who started the game took it easy on a warm day in Rio on Saturday as they did some light jogging and stretched on the sideline.

Nearby, the kids were poised throughout with their cameras ever-ready. Snap snap.

Al Michaels said Daniel Snyder doesn't plan to change Redskins name. (USATSI) Al Michaels called Redskins name controversy 'nuts.' (USATSI)

More NFL offseason: League minicamp dates | Latest news, notes

Al Michaels, the play-by-play man for NBC's Sunday Night Football, is the latest person to weigh in on the Redskins name controversy. Appearing on Jim Rome on Showtime this week, the legendary broadcaster was asked if he thought Redskins owner Daniel Snyder would keep the name.

“It seems to me as if he is going to hold on,” Michaels said (via SportsBog). “I mean all of the sudden -- I mean, for 70-some odd years this was a zero issue, and then it became an issue. I understand we live in this politically correct environment. It's crazier than ever; you know, senators want to weigh in on this, like there's nothing better to do in Congress. This becomes a big issue. I mean, I just think it's nuts. And I do know, I've talked to Snyder about it -- not recently but when we were in Washington last year -- and he basically said 'over my dead body.'”

This doesn't sound much different than what Snyder said as far back as May 2013, when he proclaimed, "We'll never change the name. It's that simple. NEVER -- you can use caps."

Predictably, the "over my dead body" sentiments didn't go over well with Oneida Indian Nation representative Ray Halbritter, who has been outspoken on the Redskins' name.

“Al Michaels' insensitive comments defending Dan Snyder perfectly exemplify why this has become the civil rights issue of the moment,” Halbritter told USAToday.com. “He proudly defends Snyder saying the name will only be changed ‘over my dead body,' somehow ignoring the fact that this name is already associated with dead bodies -- untold numbers of dead Native Americans who were tortured, abused and killed while being taunted with this racial slur.”

This latest development comes days after former Saints cornerback Champ Bailey, who was drafted seventh overall by the Redskins in 1999, said that Snyder should change the name.

“I get it, he doesn't want to change it,” Bailey said. “But he's making it worse than it should be. I don't know where the name came from or how it came about, but the bottom line is that it's still here in this day and age, and it makes no sense to have it,” Bailey said. “I love that organization, but when it starts peeling off old scabs and people are pitching a fit about it because it's degrading to them, then you've got to make a change.”

Patriots' Josh Boyce has been a go-to WR during organized team activities

Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal wrote Wednesday that "[I]t's hard not to notice Josh Boyce during the first weeks of the Patriots' organized team activities." Boyce has apparently been a "go-to target for Tom Brady" during team scrimmages and has been impressive on kick returns.Boyce caught just nine passes in nine games as a rookie last year. He was a healthy scratch for some of those weeks and was put on injured reserve in December due to an ankle injury."There's been plenty of chatter about Boyce of late," Daniels wrote. "Will he give the Patriots a dominant kick returner? As one of the fastest players on the team, will this 2013 fourth-round pick develop into another weapon for Brady?"

Organized team activities: Where players absolutely buried on the depth chart can be written up as if they are budding stars. Boyce has talent, and you know the Patriots seem to get the best out of their players. But in a best-case scenario, Boyce will open the season behind Julian Edelman, Aaron Dobson, and Danny Amendola in the Patriots' pecking order for targets. That doesn't even include tight end Rob Gronkowski, who is trying to get healthy for Week 1. Boyce barely worth your time in dynasty formats.

Mike Adams has landed in Indianapolis. (USATSI) Mike Adams has landed in Indianapolis. (USATSI)

More NFL offseason: League minicamp dates | Latest news, notes

With free agent safety Mike Adams anxious to land a job, the 10-year veteran who helped the Broncos to the Super Bowl last year finally has a new one, as the Colts announced Saturday morning they had signed the 33-year-old.

Adams spent the past two seasons in Denver where, after starting all 16 games in 2012 and accumulating a career-high 80 tackles, he became a part-time starter in 2013. Before that, Adams spent five seasons with the Browns and three with the 49ers.

“This is the longest I've ever waited to get picked up so the anxiety is starting to pick up now,” Adams said this past week on Sirius XM radio, via PFT. “I can't fathom me going out like this. I can't imagine losing a big game and not even having another opportunity to step on the field. That's why the anxiety is picking up with me.”

Adams can now exhale all that anxiety while the Colts add some much-needed depth to the safety spot.

As Pro Football Focus wrote a few months back, "A solid contributor for the Broncos last year, Adams is a fairly average safety at this point in his career, and that's not necessarily a bad thing for teams with a need at the position."

Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch may consider retirement

According to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch told two teammates last season that if the team won the Super Bowl, he would consider retirement. When asked to confirm whether or not it is really possible, a source told Rapoport, "I could see him walking away." Lynch is coming off three straight seasons with at least 1,200 rushing yards and 11 scores. He just turned 28 years old in April.

This would be a big deal for both the NFL and fantasy football. One of the better backs of the last few years. He's on a popular, successful team. Lynch still has one or two good years left in the tank barring injury. It has been done before though. Guys like Barry Sanders, Robert Smith and more recently, Rashard Mendenhall all walked away from the game on their own terms. Lynch is scheduled to earn $10.5 million over the next two seasons with millions on the table in bonus money. If Lynch is no longer 'bout that action, the hype for RB Christine Michael will be off the charts until Week 1.

Falcons QB Matt Ryan is No. 1, according to Forbes.com. (USATSI) Falcons QB Matt Ryan is No. 1, according to Forbes.com. (USATSI)

More NFL offseason: League minicamp dates | Latest news, notes

Forbes.com released its list of the 100 highest paid athletes and, not surprisingly, you had to scroll down a bit to find an NFL player. What was surprising, at least to those of us who don't study salary-cap data in our spare time, is that Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is the NFL's highest paid, as measured from June 1, 2013 to June 1, 2014.

Overall, Ryan ranked 10th, earning $43.8 million over the last 12 months. Boxer Floyd Mayweather was No. 1 ($105 million), followed by a mix of stars from the worlds of soccer, the NBA, tennis and golf.

Interestingly, a Major League Baseball player didn't make an appearance until No. 30 (Cliff Lee), though 27 players would be represented in total. The NFL, meanwhile, had 17 names on the list:

10. Matt Ryan, QB, Falcons, $43.8 million

18. Matthew Stafford, QB, Lions, $33 million

26. Peyton Manning, QB, Broncos, $27 million

40. Darrelle Revis, CB, Patriots, $23.8 million

53. Geno Atkins, DL, Bengals, $22.4 million

55. Aaron Rodgers, QB, Packers, $22 million

62. Joe Haden, CB, Browns, $21.4 million

66. Drew Brees, QB, Saints, $21 million

66. Eli Manning, QB, Giants, $21 million

69. Julius Peppers, DE, Bears, $20.8 million

70. Jason Peters, LT, Eagles, $20.7 million

84. Carlos Dunlap, DE, Bengals, $18.8 million

89. Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Cardinals, $18.5 million

91. Branden Albert, OT, Dolphins, $18.4 million

94. Jairus Byrd, S, Saints, $18 million

96. Terrell Suggs, DE, Ravens, $17.6 million

97. Brandon Marshall, WR, Bears, $17.5 million

If you're wondering, here's how Forbes.com explained its data-collection methods:

"Our earnings figures include all salaries and bonuses paid out between June 1, 2013 and June 1, 2014. So in the case of baseball players, the listed salary will include salary from the 2012 and 2013 seasons, as well as any signing, award or playoff bonuses. Winnings for golfers and tennis players represents their prize money over that period. NASCAR drivers receive a percentage of their winnings (it is split with the team), as well as a salary.

"Endorsement incomes are an estimate of sponsorship deals, appearance fees and licensing fees for the 12 months through June based on conversations with dozens of industry insiders. ... We do not deduct for taxes or agents' fees and we do not include investment income. We do include income from the sale of a business related to a sponsorship in the case of someone like LeBron James, who made millions via the $3 billion sale of Beats by Dre to Apple"

The one in which Steelers rookie RB Dri Archer is compared to Jamaal Charles

It's a simple song and dance. We all want to see the NFL's batch of new, tantalizing stars get on the field already. We can only take away so much from their college tape, and it doesn't really tell us how they will play in the NFL. So, to satisfy that need to know the future in the present, we -- team officials, people in the media, people in general -- make these player-to-player comparisons. Like this. And this. It happens in all sports, but since this is a fantasy football website ....How helpful are those comparisons? Not much at all; it's just for chatter. And here's another one that is really something. NFL Network's Albert Breer reported recently that Steelers rookie running back Dri Archer "has been tagged internally as a miniature version of Jamaal Charles."

Todd Haley, the Steelers' offensive coordinator, coached Charles when he was at the helm in Kansas City from 2009-2011. I would love to know his public opinion on this topic.Archer is certainly quick and fast. He ran a sub-4.30 40-yard dash at the combine. He's short and very light at 5-foot-8, 175 pounds. But, no, let's just go ahead and compare him with perhaps most well-rounded running back in the NFL who is also a very tough inside runner even though he is less than 200 pounds. I doubt Archer has that ability in his bag.Hell, Breer also said in the same piece that Cardinals third-round rookie wideout John Brown is being compared to T.Y. Hilton. Sure, they are similar in size, speed, and athleticism, and Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians used to coach Hilton in Indy. But let's let these kids find their footing in the league first. Do you think every running back who was fast and quick, who was less than 6 feet tall and 200 pounds was the next Jamaal Charles? Every player is different no matter what two players share physically.Let's see Dri Archer be the best Dri Archer. I don't expect him to have a significant offensive role this season. Just take this for what it is and move on.

Dirk Nowitzki thinks he's sticking with Dallas. (USATSI) Dirk Nowitzki thinks he's sticking with Dallas. (USATSI)

More Offseason Analysis: Coaching changes, news | Free Agency | Draft

Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki laughed off the idea of the Houston Rockets signing him in free agency this week and said he expects his re-signing with the Dallas Mavericks to be over "quick."

“Usually, we get it over quick,” Nowitzki said. “Four years ago, I met with Mark (Cuban) on July 2nd. I don't like the period of not knowing what's going on. I don't like the unknown. Mark and I will hopefully find a good deal for both parties.

“We have not had any talks yet, but I'm sure that won't take a long time.”

Asked if he saw any chance of him not being a Maverick next season, Nowitzki said: “Pretty slim to none. We all know I kind of grew up here in the Mavericks' (organization).”

Nowitzki even laughed when it was mentioned that the Houston Rockets – bitter rivals down Interstate 45 and the team that Dwight Howard spurned the Mavericks and Nowitzki for last summer in free agency – have been mentioned as a possible landing spot for him.

“The quote was more that they're going for every guy that's out there,” he said.

“And that, I guess, includes me. But I doubt I'll be out there long.”

via Dirk Nowitzki says no talks with Mavs yet, laughs at report of Rockets' interest | Dallas Morning News.

Rumors had surfaced that the Rockets were looking at making a push for Nowitzki, but in truth, as Nowitzki mentioned, they're just being aggressive on all fronts. Their move to decline the option on Chandler Parsons, making him a restricted free agent this summer means that they need to be aggressive this summer if they want to add another star to their combination of James Harden and Dwight Howard.

The Mavericks, meanwhile, will have cap space flexibility once again, with roughly $28 million in space this summer. Nowitzki has already said he's open to a major paycut which could help the Mavericks add to their core this summer, but they'll need to either re-sign or replace Shawn Marion and Vince Carter.
