Looks like Jimmy Butler will be a restricted free agent. (USATSI) Looks like Jimmy Butler will be a restricted free agent. (USATSI)

Chicago Bulls swingman Jimmy Butler will not get a contract extension before the midnight ET deadline on Friday, so he'll be a restricted free agent at the end of this season, Butler and his agent, Happy Walters, told Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski:

“It came down to me deciding that I want to bet on myself,” Butler told Yahoo Sports in a text message on Friday. “It was about me believing that I put the work in this summer to become a better player with the hope that my improvement will give the Bulls a better chance to win a championship.”

“All the [rookie extension] deals done so far have shown that teams are building around their stars of the future, and they're compensating those players as such,” Walters told Yahoo Sports on Friday. “I was under the impression Jimmy was also viewed as one of those future building blocks with the Bulls.

“We tried like heck to get something done, but ultimately, the Bulls wanted a ‘hometown' discount. While understandable, I doubt their GM or coaches give Mr. Reinsdorf a discount when negotiating their own deals.”

K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune has more:

"We're done talking," agent Happy Walters said by phone. "Jimmy loves Chicago and hopefully is there long-term. But his future is in his hands, not the Bulls'."

"Jimmy feels really good about the fact we engaged the Bulls in talks in good faith," Walters said. "He's ready to prove wrong the questions they have about his shooting."

The Bulls have the right to match any offer Butler receives next summer. Butler told Walters on Friday that he's ready to "play it out" and bet on himself.

Sources said the sides are $2 million apart annually over a four-year deal.

If indeed the Bulls won't increase their offer, it's a tad surprising. Butler is their best perimeter defender by a country mile, and there are few in the league who give wing scorers a tougher time. Chicago cannot afford to lose him in free agency, especially after letting Luol Deng go last year. At the same time, there are questions about how much money he should make for his services. Butler's 3-point shooting regressed last season, and he's going to need to be more consistent in that area. No one doubts his defense, but he has to prove he's a plus at both ends of the floor.

Butler's choice to bet on himself seems like a smart one, at least right now. The Bulls are a much, much more potent offensive team with Derrick Rose, Pau Gasol and Nikola Mirotic this year. That should mean many more open, easy looks for Butler, and thus a higher shooting percentage. If he makes strides in other areas, that's a bonus.

Earlier this week, Butler confidently said he thought the two sides would be able to reach an agreement.

Ricky Rubio agrees to 4-year, $55 million contract extension with Timberwolves

The decision of whether or not to extend Ricky Rubio was an interesting one for the Timberwolves.

Initially, the team offered four years and $48 million, which seemed to be more than a fair price for a point guard who averaged 10.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 9.6 assists last season — and that was with Kevin Love still in the fold to handle the bulk of the responsibilities offensively.

Rubio’s camp balked, however, and rather than see what kind of offers he may receive as a restricted free agent next summer, Minnesota decided to go even higher in order to lock up Rubio now before things could potentially get crazy.

From Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports:

Minnesota’s Ricky Rubio has reached agreement on a four-year, $55 million-plus contract extension, a league source tells Yahoo Sports.

The deal could be worth an extra $1 million if Rubio hits certain incentives, reports Jerry Zgoda of the Star Tribune.

There’s a lot Rubio does right; he has above-average court vision, which results in superior passing that consistently allows him to find teammates for open looks. He excels with dribble penetration, which opens up additional passing lanes that make things easier for him while capably running the team’s offense.

The glaring issue with Rubio, of course, is his inability to make shots at a high percentage. He shot just 38.1 percent from the field last season, which was a career best through his first three NBA seasons.

But Minnesota is a market that needs to lock up homegrown talent at any price. Kevin Love bolted in free agency the moment he got the chance, and free agents aren’t ever going to see the Timberwolves as a desirable landing spot. Rubio can be a franchise cornerstone to pair with the newly-acquired Andrew Wiggins, and for that reason, this extension was a bargain for Minnesota, and a fair one for Rubio to accept.

Colts WR Reggie Wayne practices in full Friday, looks good for Week 9

Wide receiver Reggie Wayne of the Indianapolis Colts returned to practice in full Friday and is on track to play Monday night versus the New York Giants. Wayne missed the team's Week 8 game against Pittsburgh due to an elbow injury. Wayne is second on the team in receptions (38) and yards (434). He has one touchdown on the year.

Not that QB Andrew Luck has missed him, but Wayne making it back to the field for the Colts only helps the league's leading passer. While 35 years old, Wayne is still a reliable pair of hands and an exceptional route-runner. He's the kind of receiver that quarterbacks throw to when the game in on the line. WIth so many teams on bye, Wayne is a WR2/3 play this week.Wayne is chasing some historical career milestones. He has already cracked the top 10 all-time in receptions (1,044) and receiving yards (14,000). While he won't catch Jerry Rice, there is a real chance that Wayne can catch long-time Colt Marvin Harrison (1,102 receptions for 14,580 yards) and become the franchise's all-time leading receiver. Surpassing Harrison in these two categories would make Wayne the all-time NFL leader among receivers who played their entire career with one team.

Rams WR Brian Quick needs shoulder surgery, out for season

Not much is going right for the St. Louis Rams, losers of three of their last four games, and now they've lost their best wide receiver for the duration. Brian Quick suffered a left shoulder injury during the second quarter of Sunday's defeat in Kansas City. Head coach Jeff Fisher confirmed Monday that Quick suffered a dislocation and a torn labrum to that shoulder and needs season-ending surgery.Prior to the injury, Quick led the Rams with 375 receiving yards. Only tight end Lance Kendricks (four) has scored more touchdowns for St. Louis than Quick (three).

The third-year receiver out of Appalachian State was having a breakout year through Week 5. But he caught only four passes for 53 yards after that. Kenny Britt and tight end Jared Cook will ostensibly become the heads of this receiving corps, but it's not an appealing one for fantasy owners. The Rams' offense looks lost right now. The O-line is falling apart -- Jake Long is out for the year after an ACL tear Sunday -- St. Louis has no idea what it wants to do with its running backs, it can't find a way to involve Tavon Austin consistently, Austin Davis isn't more than an average quarterback, and this whole show is being directed by one of the worst OCs some years running now, Brian Schottenheimer. And look at the Rams' upcoming schedule: at San Francisco, at Arizona, hosting Denver, at San Diego. They look well on their way to 2-9.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) The Saints' offense is potent enough with Drew Brees.

But if they continue to get big games on the ground from Mark Ingram, they may just leave the rest of the weak NFC South in the dust.

Brees threw for 297 yards and a touchdown and also ran for another score, and Ingram turned in another strong performance carrying 30 times for 100 yards and two TDs and New Orleans defeated the Carolina Panthers 28-10 Thursday night to take over first place in the NFC South.

Brees praised Ingram, who was coming off 172 yards rushing last week against Green Bay, for ''carrying the load'' and being the catalyst for the Saints' recent turnaround the past two weeks.

''Man, it's when our offense is at its best,'' Brees said of the Saints' running game.

The Saints (4-4) piled up 375 yards to snap a seven-game losing streak on the road that dated back to last November.

Brees said too much is made of the team's road woes, but he knows it wasn't going away until the Saints could find a way to win a big game on the road.

Brees finished 24 of 34 and tight end Jimmy Graham had seven catches for 83 yards and a touchdown.

But it was Ingram who kept the Panthers off balance by picking up key first downs.

''The offensive line and tight end did a great job of hitting them, hitting them and hitting them,'' Ingram said. ''I think they started to wear down and we were able to get some leaky yards and some big gains.''

The struggling defending NFC South champion Panthers (3-5-1) have only won once in their past seven games after opening the season with back-to-back wins. They have 10 days before their next game to figure out how to turn things around.

''We know we are better - simple as that,'' Panthers quarterback Cam Newton said. ''It's nothing that someone has to say that hasn't already been said. It's a lot that hasn't been done yet.''

Brees said he didn't let the team's road struggles creep into his mind, even after he threw an interception and fumbled in the first quarter.

He settled down late in the second, leading touchdown drives on four of the next five possessions.

The Saints' defense did its part, sacking Newton four times and forcing two turnovers. Newton, who spent much of the night under heavy duress playing behind an offensive line without three of its regular starters, was limited to 151 yards passing.

Carolina had opportunities to seize momentum after New Orleans' first two turnovers, but couldn't capitalize.

That's nothing new. The Panthers had three trips in the red zone last week against Seattle, but came away with only six points.

''It's hard when you don't take advantage of those opportunities,'' Panthers coach Ron Rivera said.

The Saints didn't have the same problem converting turnovers into points.

With the Panthers pinned back in their own end in a scoreless game, Junior Galette sacked Newton from behind and stripped the ball, allowing linebacker Curtis Lofton to recover at the Carolina 3. Ingram took advantage two plays later with a 3-yard run to give the Saints a 7-0 lead.

After forcing a three-and-out, Brees directed an 85-yard drive that ended when he slipped a 1-yard pass just past Melvin White to Graham on the right side with 3 seconds left in the half and the Saints were off and running while the Panthers headed to the locker room serenaded by a chorus of boos.

Brees scored on a quarterback sneak when he dove over the pile in the third quarter and Ingram sealed the win with his second TD run in the fourth quarter.

Brees said he had the option of calling a timeout before his fourth-and-goal run at the Carolina 1, but decided to take a shot and leaped over the pile with the ball extended to score.

''Drew felt with their linebackers' depth, he'd be able to get the half yard - and he did,'' Saints coach Sean Payton said.

One of the few highlights for the Panthers came from Newton.

He turned in one of the most athletic plays of the season when he scrambled out of the pocket, raced around the left end and took off from the 5-yard line and soared toward the goal line with the ball outstretched in his right hand for a touchdown, cutting the Saints lead to 14-7.

While Newton struggled, his receivers didn't give him much help.

Jerricho Cotchery couldn't haul in a catchable deep ball inside the 10 in the first quarter and Newton's on-target throw hit Brenton Bersin in the hands and popped straight to Corey White for an interception on the next drive. Rookie Kelvin Benjamin also dropped a pass in the end zone for the second straight week.

''We knew we had a chance to take control of the division,'' Ingram said. ''We lost to them here at the end of last year so we felt like we left something here. We had to come back and take care of business.''

NOTES: The Panthers got running back DeAngelo Williams back after missing four straight games with an ankle injury. He had eight carries for 20 yards. ... Carolina was without three starting offensive linemen - left tackle Byron Bell and guards Amini Silatolu and Trai Turner - due to injuries. ... The Saints had 27 first downs to Carolina's 15.

Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams to start Thursday versus Saints

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said Tuesday that running back DeAngelo Williams, who is coming off of an ankle injury, will start when the team hosts divisional rival New Orleans on Thursday night. The 31-year-old Williams has played in only two games this season, with his last action coming in Week 4 versus Baltimore. He has run for 106 yards on 25 carries overall.

While Jonathan Stewart seems like the better of the two backs, Williams is someone to consider as a flex play this week. It appears, at the very least, that Williams will get a fair amount of carries. The matchup is nothing to be scared of as the Saints allow the 10th-most fantasy points per game to running backs. Williams will be the fresher of the two Panthers' backs during this short week, and there are six teams on bye, meaning many fantasy owners will be missing their lead RBs.The Panthers' backfield has been a fantasy headache for what seems like a decade, yet this is one week when throwing one of the two out there could pay off.

Jets choose QB Michael Vick over Geno Smith for Week 9

Apparently, posting a quarterback rating equal to Blutarsky's GPA is a good way to lose your starting gig in the NFL. Well, at least for one week.Jets head coach Rex Ryan announced Monday that Michael Vick will start this Sunday's game in Kansas City, and Geno Smith will be his backup. However, Ryan said Smith could start again at some point this season. That, of course, will depend on how Vick performs. If Week 8's game was any sign, this won't be the last time Ryan will be asked whom his starting QB is.Vick fumbled the ball four times -- losing two -- threw an interception, completed only half of his 36 passes and was sacked four times in a little more than three quarters against the Bills. But the only reason why he was even on the field was Smith. With his eight passes, he connected more often with Buffalo defenders (three times) than with his teammates (twice). This led to an infamous rating of zero ... point ... zero.

Vick hasn't completed at least 60 percent of his attempts since his monster 2010 season. He takes a bunch of sacks, and you know that turnovers are a part of his game; he's committed 20 in his last 16 starts. But the legs are still there. Vick ran for a team-leading 69 yards against the Bills. That alone puts him on the QB2 streamer radar. The Chiefs play very solid, attacking defense at home, and they just recorded seven sacks of Austin Davis on Sunday. But if you're willing to take the good with the bad, Vick's running ability could help you out if you're in a pinch in Week 9.

Jimmy Graham has had an eventful first quarter. (USATSI) Jimmy Graham has had an eventful first quarter. (USATSI)

The Saints were driving on the opening series of the Thursday night game vs. the Panthers, and everything was going well for New Orleans as it moved quickly into the red zone.

Until this happened (and look at that tremendous ricochet off the fine play by Carolina cornerback Antoine Cason that landed in the arms of Dwan Edwards).

Obviously, that's a painful result for a Saints offense that had looked strong thus far. But maybe not as painful as the hit Thomas Davis put on Jimmy Graham during the return.

Though Graham didn't immediately rise from the turf, he was fine, returning on the next Saints series.

As you can see here as he just hurdles whomever is in his way. .

Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) nearing return

Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said Tuesday that Robert Griffin III is nearing a return to action. "I think Robert is very, very, very close and we just have to decide if he's ready," Gruden said. "Physically I think he'll be ready to go. Doctors are feeling pretty good about it, they still want to feel around this week until we make the final determination. I just want to make sure he feels good in the pocket."Griffin dislocated his ankle in the team's Week 2 game versus Jacksonville. There was some level of confidence in backup Kirk Cousins. That, however, has subsided. In relief, Cousins threw almost as many interceptions (nine) as touchdowns (10). Washington lost each of the four games he played in full. Cousins was benched in favor of Colt McCoy at halftime of the team's Week 7 game. McCoy got the start in Week 8 and played admirably. In spite of that, it appears the team will gladly turn back to Griffin as soon as he's physically ready to go.

This is good news for everyone in Washington as RGIII is easily the most talented QB on the Redskins' roster. His health has been an issue and was the source of many fantasy stories and headaches last season. If Griffin returns for Week 9, he'll have his work cut out for him. The 'Skins Week 9 opponent, Minnesota, gives up the second-fewest fantasy points in the league to quarterbacks. The biggest beneficiaries from this news are WRs Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson, along with TE Jordan Reed. Griffin being under center bumps up their value significantly. While we wouldn't recommend starting Griffin this week, his skill players should be used as they normally would, with a little added confidence.

Report: Redskins QB Robert Griffin III to start Week 9

According to "Redskins Showtime" host, Dianna Marie Russini, the Redskins have decided to turn to Robert Griffin III at quarterback for their Week 9 game with the Minnesota Vikings. Griffin has been battling back from an ankle injury he sustained in Week 2.Griffin practiced in full Wednesday, splitting first-team reps with Colt McCoy. McCoy filled in admirably for the Redskins in their Monday night win at Dallas. However, the talk afterward turned immediately to the fact that it's clear that Griffin is the most talented quarterback on the roster.

Minnesota's pass defense allows the second-fewest fantasy points per game to quarterbacks, so the better the player Washington can trot out there, the better chance it has to win. For fantasy owners, Griffin's return to the lineup means upgrades for all other skill players on the Redskins, primarily WRs Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson, and TE Jordan Reed. Due to the matchup and the fact that it's his first game back, I don't recommend starting Griffin unless your main QB is on bye or if you are in a two-quarterback league.

Lorenzo Mauldin's first-round potential will be tested this week. (Getty Images)Lorenzo Mauldin's first-round potential will be tested this week. (Getty Images)

FLORIDA STATE | LOUISVILLE

Thursday, Oct. 30, 7:30 p.m.

Louisville, Ken. – ESPN

Teddy Bridgewater, Calvin Pryor and Marcus Smith (all 2014 first round picks) are gone, but Louisville is still loaded with NFL talent and could set a new school record for draft picks in the 2015 class (current record is six). The Cardinals defeated the Seminoles the last time these two teams matched up in 2002, but Florida State hasn't lost a game in close to two years and are a program loaded with next level players themselves. Not only does this game have serious College Football Playoff implications, but it's also arguably the most NFL talent Papa John's Cardinal Stadium has ever seen.

FIVE PROSPECTS TO FOCUS ON:

DE/OLB Lorenzo Mauldin, Louisville (6-4 | 243 | 4.73 | #94)

Louisville leads the FBS in total defense, allowing only 243.9 yards per game and Mauldin is a substantial part of that as a hybrid OLB in the Cardinals' 3-4 defense. He will line up as a rusher, which he has done his entire career, but has adjusted quickly to his new responsibilities, often standing up and dropping in coverage. Mauldin is quick-footed with easy change of direction skills to be fluid and display clean movement skills on his feet. He is a feisty player, making him tough to block, but he still needs to develop his core strength and shed technique. Mauldin and his first round potential will be tested against talented, but streaky Florida State RS senior LT Cameron Erving (6-5 | 304 | 5.16 | #75).

QB Jameis Winston, Florida State, rSO (6-4 | 235 | 4.83 | #5)

The Cardinals' top-ranked defense will present arguably the toughest challenge for Winston up to this point in 2014, a unit allowing only 177.0 passing yards per game. With a bye last weekend, the Seminoles quarterback has heard over the last two weeks how he is “back” in the Heisman race after his impressive performance against Notre Dame two weeks ago, leading his team to the comeback victory. How will he respond? If history is any indication, Winston will be at the top of his game because on the field, he seems to be in his element and comfortable regardless of the pressure or situation. But Louisville ranks top-10 in the FBS in pass defense and sacks so this test carries a little more weight.

WR DeVante Parker, Louisville, SR (6-3 | 209 | 4.48 | #9)

Entering the 2014 college football season, Parker was my top-ranked senior wide receiver prospect after his performance as a junior (55 catches, 885 yards, 12 touchdowns). But he broke a bone in his left foot in August and was sidelined for the first seven weeks of the season. Parker returned two weeks ago against NC State and quickly made an impact with nine receptions for 132 yards, his sixth career 100+ yard receiving performance. Near full health, he is one of the most impressive wideouts in the country with his tall frame, speed to stretch the field and wingspan, giving him a large catching radius. Parker vs. Seminoles junior CB P.J. Williams (6-0 | 196 | 4.48 | #26) is a must-see match-up.

DT Eddie Goldman, Florida State, JR (6-3 | 314 | 5.28 | #90)

The Seminoles lost six starters from last year's National Title defense, including second round pick DT Timmy Jernigan. But Goldman was one of the six starters who returned and might be the better NFL prospect than Jernigan. He currently leads Florida State in tackles for loss (5.5) and sacks (3.0) in 2014 and impacts the game with his quickness, power and ball awareness. Goldman has forceful hands and takes pride in working off blocks and being physical at the point of attack, extending his arms and not allowing blockers to dictate his path. Goldman isn't the biggest “name” on the FSU defense, but he has the talent to be highest drafted Seminoles DT since Brodrick Bunkley, who went 14th overall in 2006.

TE Gerald Christian, Louisville, rSR (6-3 | 242 | 4.76 | #18)

An underrated tight end prospect, Christian isn't one of the main weapons in the Bobby Petrino's offense at Louisville, but when he has the athleticism to get open and create as a ballcarrier. He has 22 catches for 256 yards and three touchdowns in 2014, lining up inline, in the backfield and in the slot as a receiver. Christian has an athletic body type with a smooth release off the line of scrimmage, the route speed to challenge linebackers in coverage and the toughness to keep his feet after contact. He isn't the most consistent finisher as a blocker, but the Florida transfer doesn't shy from popping pads and is physical at the point of attack. Although a tad undersized, Christian will play on Sundays.

OTHER FLORIDA STATE PROSPECTS TO WATCH:

WR Rashad Greene, SR (6-0 | 178 | 4.47 | #80)

CB Ronald Darby, JR (5-11 | 188 | 4.46 | #3)

DE Mario Edwards, JR (6-3 | 294 | 4.88 | #15)

LG Josue Matias, SR (6-6 | 331 | 5.32 | #70)

TE Nick O'Leary, SR (6-3 | 244 | 4.76 | #35)

RG Tre Jackson, SR (6-4 | 339 | 5.38 | #54)

OTHER MATCH-UPS TO WATCH:

FLORIDA vs. GEORGIA

Saturday, Nov. 1, 3:30 p.m.

Jacksonville, Fla. – CBS

WHEN THE GATORS HAVE THE BALL…

Despite injuries hurting the Gators in the trenches, Florida has talent on the offensive line, including on the right side with senior RG Trenton Brown (6-8 | 350 | 5.48 | #74) and RS senior RT Chaz Green (6-5 | 300 | 5.17 | #75). As a unit, the Georgia defense has been disappointing, but the Bulldogs have several individual prospects worth watching, including RS sophomore OLB Leonard Floyd (6-3 | 220 | 4.73 | #84), who leads the team in sacks (5.0), and junior OLB Jordan Jenkins (6-2 | 246 | 4.76 | #59), who has a team-best 6.5 TFL.

WHEN THE BULLDOGS HAVE THE BALL…

The top NFL prospect for Florida is junior DE Dante Fowler (6-2 | 261 | 4.84 | #6), who has athleticism and hand use to be a devastating pass rusher with the motor to match. He has top-15 potential if he declares early for the 2015 NFL Draft. RS senior QB Hutson Mason (6-2 | 202 | 4.96 | #14) doesn't have physical tools that stand out, but his confidence has improved in his first season as the starter. With the success on the ground, Georgia hasn't had to rely on his arm to win games, but that could change vs. Florida's tough run defense.

OTHER FLORIDA PROSPECTS TO WATCH:

DT Leon Orr, rSR (6-4 | 305 | 5.14 | #8)

FB Hunter Joyer, SR (5-11 | 232 | 4.73 | #41)

OLB Neiron Ball, rSR (6-2 | 230 | 4.68 | #11)

LT D.J. Humphries, JR (6-5 | 290 | 4.97 | #70)

OTHER GEORGIA PROSPECTS TO WATCH:

ILB Ramik Wilson, SR (6-2 | 232 | 4.76 | #51)

CB Damian Swann, SR (5-11 | 178 | 4.52 | #5)

C David Andrews, SR (6-2 | 295 | 5.15 | #61)

ILB Amarlo Herrera, SR (6-0 | 244 | 4.77 | #52)

TCU at WEST VIRGINIA

Saturday, Nov. 1, 3:30 p.m.

Manhattan, Kan. – ABC

WHEN THE HORNED FROGS HAVE THE BALL…

One of the surprise stories of 2014 has been the TCU offense, specifically RS junior QB Trevone Boykin (6-2 | 215 | 4.57 | #2), who has a 21:3 TD:INT ratio in 2014 and averages 329.4 passing yards per game. RS junior WR Josh Doctson (6-4 | 190 | 4.51 | #9) has been Boykins favorite target, leading the team with 35 catches for 573 yards and seven scores. Senior DE/OLB Shaq Riddick (6-5 | 242 | 4.82 | #98) transferred from the FCS level and started slow with a pair of sacks in the first six games, but he has registered 4.0 sacks over the last two games.

WHEN THE MOUNTAINEERS HAVE THE BALL…

Like Boykin and the TCU offense, RS senior QB Clint Trickett (6-2 | 176 | 4.82 | #9) and the West Virginia pass offense have far exceeded expectations this season. Senior WR Kevin White (6-3 | 209 | 4.49 | #11) is a big reason for that and his battle against TCU RS senior CB Kevin White (5-10 | 175 | 4.43 | #25) will be fun to watch, and for reasons more than just the same name. While White deserves all the attention he receives, senior WR Mario Alford (5-8 | 178 | 4.39 | #5) has also impressed with six scores receiving and two as a KR.

OTHER TCU PROSPECTS TO WATCH:

DT Chucky Hunter, SR (6-1 | 305 | 5.12 | #96)

ILB Paul Dawson, SR (6-2 | 230 | 4.76 | #47)

SS Sam Carter, rSR (6-1 | 215 | 4.63 | #17)

QB Matt Joeckel, rSR (6-4 | 240 | 4.95 | #16)

KENTUCKY at MISSOURI

Saturday, Nov. 1, 4 p.m.

Columbiana, Mo. – SEC Network

WHEN THE WILDCATS HAVE THE BALL…

The biggest reason to watch this match-up is the pass rushers. On Missouri's defense, RS junior DE/OLB Shane Ray (6-3 | 245 | 4.54 | #56) ranks second in the country with 14.0 tackles for loss and is one of only three FBS defenders with double-digit sacks (10.0). Senior DE Markus Golden (6-3 | 260 | 4.72 | #33) isn't as dynamic, but he offers more versatility and is a well-rounded edge player, rushing the passer or stopping the run. It will be a long day for senior LT Darrian Miller (6-5 | 292 | 5.17 | #77) and the rest of the Wildcats' offensive line.

WHEN THE TIGERS HAVE THE BALL…

While Missouri has Ray and Golden, Kentucky has RS senior DE/OLB Alvin “Bud” Dupree (6-4 | 267 | 4.63 | #2) and senior DE ZaDarius Smith (6-5 | 264 | 4.83 | #94). A former TE, Dupree leads the Wildcats in tackles for loss (6.0), sacks (4.0) and QB hurries (5) from his hybrid edge rusher role in Kentucky's 3-4 defense and like Ray, is a projected first round pick. Smith lines up with his hand on the ground as both an outside and inside rusher and is tied with Dupree in total tackles (45) and not too far behind him in tackles for loss (5.5) and sacks (3.5).

OTHER KENTUCKY PROSPECTS TO WATCH:

QB Patrick Towles, rSO (6-5 | 236 | 4.88 | #14)

WR DeMarco Robinson, SR (5-10 | 158 | 4.49 | #9)

WR Javess Blue, SR (6-0 | 190 | 4.53 | #8)

AUBURN at OLE MISS

Saturday, Nov. 1, 7 p.m.

Oxford, Miss. – ESPN

WHEN THE TIGERS HAVE THE BALL…

After finishing fourth on the team in rushing last year, senior RB Cameron Artis-Payne (5-10 | 210 | 4.58 | #44) has been the feature back for Auburn in 2014 and is currently second in the SEC with 831 rushing yards, averaging 5.5 yards per carry. Ole Miss' secondary might be the toughest senior QB Nick Marshall (6-1 | 210 | 4.48 | #14) will face this season as he continues to try and convince scouts he can play the position in the NFL. Senior CB Senquez Golson (5-9 | 180 | 4.43 | #21) is short, but plays big with a SEC-best eight interceptions.

WHEN THE REBELS HAVE THE BALL…

Who to blame for Ole Miss' costly fourth quarter mistakes last week is irrelevant once this game kicks off and scouts will be eager to see how senior QB Bo Wallace (6-4 | 203 | 4.87 | #14) responds – can he right the ship in front of the home crowed or will the pressure be too much , especially in a close game? The Tigers might not have a future first rounder on defense, but there are over a half dozen draft picks, including at the LB level with junior MLB Cassanova McKinzy (6-2 | 249 | 4.77 | #8) and RS junior WLB Kris Frost (6-2 | 234 | 4.65 | #17).

OTHER AUBURN PROSPECTS TO WATCH:

STANFORD at OREGON

Saturday, Nov. 1, 7:30 p.m.

Eugene, Ore. – FOX

WHEN THE CARDINAL HAVE THE BALL…

Senior WR Ty Montgomery (6-2 | 215 | 4.46 | #7) has struggled over the years against some of the Pac-12's top cornerbacks, including senior CB Ifo Ekpre-Olomu (5-9 | 195 | 4.46 | #14). But Montgomery is playing with more confidence catching the ball in 2014 and he shows it frequently with the inaccuracy and inconsistent timing of RS junior QB Kevin Hogan (6-4 | 228 | 4.72 | #8). Junior LT Andrus Peat (6-7 | 312 | 5.28 | #70) has showed he's not a flawless prospect in 2014, but he's also showed why he might be a top-10 pick with his rare skills.

WHEN THE DUCKS HAVE THE BALL…

The favorite to be the No. 1 overall pick, RS junior QB Marcus Mariota (6-4 | 215 | 4.52 | #8) has never beaten Stanford, bringing a 0-2 record as a starter against the Cardinal into this match-up. He has fumbled four times against Stanford the past two years and this will likely be his final chance to defeat the Cardinal. Senior LT Jake Fisher (6-6 | 299 | 5.22 | #75) is the second-best LT prospect in this game, but he's not too far behind Peat and will be tested against Stanford's power up front, notably RS senior DE Henry Anderson (6-6 | 295 | 5.06 | #91).

OTHER STANFORD PROSPECTS TO WATCH:

SS Jordan Richards, SR (5-11 | 208 | 4.57 | #8)

OLB James Vaughters, SR (6-2 | 254 | 4.73 | #9)

ILB A.J. Tarpley, rSR (6-2 | 238 | 4.84 | #17)

Tempe, Ariz. – Fox Sports 1

WHEN THE UTES HAVE THE BALL…

With senior WR Dres Anderson (6-2 | 190 | 4.53 | #6) out for the year, senior WR Kaelin Clay (5-10 | 188 | 4.53 | #8) and RS senior TE Westlee Tonga (6-4 | 252 | 4.84 | #80) will need to step up for the Utes' offense and help their draft stocks in the process. RS senior FS Damarious Randall (6-0 | 190 | 4.56 | #3) isn't the biggest and tends to be overaggressive, but he has NFL speed, awareness and a motor that won't quit. Senior DE Marcus Hardison (6-4 | 298 | 4.96 | #1) looks like a DT, but leads ASU in sacks (4.0) as an edge rusher.

WHEN THE SUN DEVILS HAVE THE BALL…

Although he doesn't look quite 100% healthy, RS senior QB Taylor Kelly (6-2 | 211 | 4.84 | #10) is back on the field for the Sun Devils after missing three starts with a right foot injury. He entered the season as a projected day three draft pick and has a chance to help himself the next two weeks against Utah and Notre Dame at home. He will rely on RS junior WR Jaelen Strong (6-4 | 212 | 4.55 | #21), who is third in the Pac-12 with 744 receiving yards and will often match-up against Utah versatile senior CB Eric Rowe (6-1 | 201 | 4.53 | #18).

Ryan Tannehill has found a mentor in Dan Marino. (USATSI) Ryan Tannehill has found a mentor in Dan Marino. (USATSI)

When the Miami Dolphins hired Dan Marino in August, they brought him in to serve as a special adviser in the front office. Apparently, Marino's role with the team isn't just limited to the front office though because the Hall of Famer has also been helping out quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

Tannehill said on Wednesday that he's been spending some quality time with Marino and picking his brain.

"Dan has been great. He's been around a lot as of recent," Tannehill said, via the Dolphins official website. "I've watched tape with him. He's been in a few meeting rooms. He is a great resource to have around with his knowledge of the game... and the success that he had."

Marino holds pretty much every Dolphins' passing record and Tannehill described watching film with him as 'cool.'

"I appreciate the knowledge he has of the game, just little insights that he can point out and just him being around showing that he cares, it's nice," Tannehill said. "He's always just pointing out little things on tape, whether it's a receiver's routes or something I'm doing. He's good at picking up little things and passing them along."

It's not clear when Marino started working with Tannehill, but Tannehill has looked better over the past few weeks. In two of Miami's past four games, Tannehill has completed over 74 percent of his passes, something that he only did once in the prior two seasons combined.

One thing Tannehill probably won't be taking tips on is scrambling. The former Texas A&M quarterback has more rushing yards in his past two games (96) than Marino had in his entire 17-year career (87).

David Lee out, Andrew Bogut ill vs. Kings

I wanted Steve Kerr – who was leaning toward bringing Andre Iguodala off the bench for Harrison Barnes – to stick with the same starting lineup as last season.

Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Iguodala, David Lee and Andrew Bogut were just so darn effective last season.

But the new coach won’t even have the option of maintaining that continuity when the Warriors open their season against the Kings tonight.

Rusty Simmons of SFGate:

Draymond Green will start Wednesday night’s season-opener against the Kings as power forward David Lee continues to deal with a left hamstring strain, according to Warriors head coach Steve Kerr.

Green meshed well with the other starters last year, but if only Golden State had all of them available.

Monte Poole of CSN Bay Area:

Simmons:

Well that leaves the Warriors awfully thin up front. A limited Festus Ezeli and Ognjen Kuzmic are probably overmatched.

DeMarcus Cousins should be licking his chops.

Hernandez will likely be allowed to watch the Patriots play. (WCVB-TV) Hernandez will likely be allowed to watch the Patriots play. (WCVB-TV)

Aaron Hernandez didn't get to watch Tom Brady go up against Peyton Manning the last time the Patriots and Broncos played, but this time around, Hernandez will likely be allowed to watch.

Suffolk Sheriff Steven Tompkins told the Boston Herald that Hernandez has been a 'model citizen' in jail and that he's likely earned the right to watch his former team play.

"He's doing fine," Tompkins said. "No problems, no complaints, so I think everything's working out right. He can probably watch the Patriots games."

When the Patriots and Broncos played in January's AFC Championship game, Hernandez was being held in a different jail and wasn't allowed to watch. Hernandez then changed jails in July so that he could be closer to his legal team in Boston.

The former Patriots tight end turned triple murder suspect is currently in jail as he awaits trial in the death of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd. Hernandez is also facing two murder charges stemming from a drive-by shooting that took place outside of a Boston nightclub in 2012.

Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

In his career, Bill Belichick is 12-10 against Peyton Manning. (Getty Images) In his career, Bill Belichick is 12-10 against Peyton Manning. (Getty Images)

Bill Belichick has been coaching in the NFL since 1976, when he was a special teams assistant with the Detroit Lions. In that time he's faced countless quarterbacks, some of whom ended up in the Hall of Fame.

But this Sunday's opponent, Peyton Manning, tops the list as far as the Patriots coach is concerned.

"I mean, he's great, he's obviously a great quarterback," Belichick said Wednesday. "The best quarterback I've coached against. ... "Not to take anything away from the Montanas, Marinos and Elways or whoever is up there with those guys, but (Manning) is tough."

Belichick's comments come a day after he talked up Manning who, like Tom Brady, will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

"He's very smart," the Patriots coach said Tuesday. "He has a great understanding of concepts and timing, game management, clock management, situational football -- third down, red area -- great utilization of the field from sideline-to-sideline and attacking the deep part of the field, very accurate, great decision-maker, quick release. ... I don't think there are any weaknesses in his game."

Belichick has faced Manning 22 times as either a coach or coordinator and he's come out on top on 12 occasions. With Brady under center, Belichick's record improves to 10-5. And here's one more reason the Pats might have an advantage this week: As CBSSports.com's John Breech pointed out, Manning is 8-11 when the temperature falls below 40 degrees at kickoff. And he's 3-8 against the Patriots during the regular season.

Sunday's forecast for Foxboro calls for a 30 percent chance of snow.

Lions WR Calvin Johnson ready to return after Week 9 bye

WIth their bye week on tap for Week 9, the Detroit Lions will use the time off to rest and heal, specifically star WR Calvin Johnson. Johnson said Wednesday that he plans to be ready to go for the team's Week 10 game with Miami. "Definitely expect to play," Johnson said. "I'm looking forward to the game, playing some old teammates. That makes it all that much better."Johnson has missed the last three games due to a high right ankle sprain.

This is good for all Lions' fantasy value except for WR Golden Tate. Tate has filled in nicely in Johnson's absence, averaging eight catches for 116 yards receiving, while also adding two touchdowns in the three games. He has been a WR1 the past few weeks, but figures to slip to a low-end WR2 with Johnson's return. Johnson's return will definitely be good for QB Matthew Stafford, giving him his biggest receiving weapon back. It will also help open running lanes for whoever is manning the Lions backfield, whether it be Reggie Bush, Joique Bell, or even Theo Riddick.

Who's in and who's out of the early games in Week 8?

Are you enjoying your breakfast football? If you started Matt Ryan, the answer is a resounding "Yes!" [UPDATE: Second half, not so much.] If you are facing Ryan, don't fear; there is still plenty of time to forge a comeback today. To that end, we'll be here to give you the latest on this morning's injured stars. There aren't many game-time decisions to track in the early games -- A.J. Green, Shane Vereen and Vincent Jackson are about it -- but keep refreshing this post until those 1 p.m. Eastern kickoffs as we pass along anything worth noting.-- In a late-game note: The Colts are reportedly leaning toward sitting out Trent Richardson. He didn't practice all week because of a hamstring injury. He is not a fantasy option even if he plays, at clearly less than full strength. Conversely, Ahmad Bradshaw looks like an RB1 versus Pittsburgh.-- NFL Network's Stacey Dales has heard, via a Bengals source, that A.J. Green won't play today versus the Ravens. However, she adds that Green was "close" to suiting up and gives him a 70 percent chance of playing next week versus the Jaguars. Mohamed Sanu and Andy Dalton will have their work cut out for them versus an aggressive Ravens defense. Giovani Bernard can't be as unproductive as he was last week, but no A.J. hurts his stock as well. I still think he's a high-end RB2 today. A few minutes later, Green was deemed inactive, officially.-- Storm Johnson is inactive for the Jaguars. He's a healthy scratch with Toby Gerhart back. Denard Robinson will start at RB for the Jags again. He is a low-end RB2 versus Miami.-- Speaking of healthy scratch, Bernard Pierce is out for the Ravens. Justin Forsett remains the lead back for Baltimore. He is an RB2 versus Cincy. However, Lorenzo Taliaferro is worth a shot-in-the-dark flex as he is expected to be the goal-line back.-- As expected, RB Anthony Dixon will start today for the Bills. Bryce Brown will back him up. Neither is more than a desperation flex against the Jets. Dixon is the "safer" option, but Brown has a lot more upside.-- Josh McCown is active for the Bucs after dealing with a thumb injury. However, he is still pretty far behind starting QB Mike Glennon.-- Jadaveon Clowney is active for the Texans. He'll be on a "pitch count" for today's game against the Titans, but the Houston defense is a solid start against sixth-round rookie Zach Mettenberger making his NFL debut.-- Shonn Greene is active for the Titans. However, RB Bishop Sankey will continue to start. He is a middling flex option versus the Texans.-- Dolphins RB Lamar Miller is active. He's being nagged by a minor knee injury, but he is a low-end RB1/high-end RB2 versus the Jaguars.-- In another late game note, Eagles RB Darren Sproles is not expected to play against the Cardinals today. He wasn't doing much for fantasy owners anyway. You can put him safely on your bench. Chris Polk should see some work behind LeSean McCoy.-- Giovani Bernard is active for the Bengals. He took some hard hits last week that resulted in a rib injury. He is an RB2 for the struggling Bengals. It'll be much easier for the Ravens to shut him down without A.J. Green to worry about.-- Patriots RB Shane Vereen is active despite missing Friday's practice due to an injury. He is a strong RB2 in PPR leagues versus the Bears.-- Jets WR Eric Decker is active for the Jets. He's basically over his hamstring injury. Percy Harvin should help draw some coverage away from the former Bronco. He is a serviceable WR3 today against Buffalo.-- Buccaneers WR Vincent Jackson is active for what might be his last game with Tampa Bay. He is a WR2 against the Vikings today despite a lingering rib injury.-- Panthers RB Chris Ogbonnaya is active. He has an injured groin. He is not worth your time.-- Seahawks TE Luke Willson is active after missing Week 7 due to a groin injury. He is a low-end TE2 versus Carolina.-- And Patriots WR Aaron Dobson is a healthy scratch once again. He has fallen hard and fast. Players who have already been ruled out for Week 8 include C.J. Spiller, Fred Jackson, Pierre Thomas, Khiry Robinson, Reggie Wayne and Owen Daniels. For a full rundown of injuries across the league this week, click the source link below to the NFL's official injury report.

-- The Bills will move on to their third- and fourth-string running backs today in Anthony Dixon and Bryce Brown. Jackson will miss at least a few weeks due to an injured groin while Spiller has been placed on short-term injured reserve. He will be ineligible to play until Week 16. Dixon is expected to get the majority of the snaps in a subpar matchup versus the Jets, but Brown has much, much more upside. Neither is more than a desperation RB3 this week. For more of my thoughts on this "redesigned" backfield, hit this thing.-- With Thomas (shoulder) and Robinson (forearm) both out for the Saints, Mark Ingram should receive at least 15 touches versus the Packers. He's a safe bet for a score in what should be a shootout. However, Travaris Cadet is a really intriguing prospect for PPR leagues. He saw nine targets in last week's game versus Detroit, including six in the fourth quarter alone while Thomas was in the locker room. Again, in what should be a high-scoring contest, Cadet is a solid plug-and-play flex option.-- Wayne will miss a game or two because of an elbow injury. He wasn't doing a whole lot in the box score anyway, but Andrew Luck will probably miss Wayne's reliable hands versus Pittsburgh. Hakeem Nicks and Donte Moncrief will help pick up the slack, but this could really mean that T.Y. Hilton might see 13-17 targets. That kid is just on fire and is a locked-in WR1 against a shoddy pass defense.-- Daniels underwent a procedure to clean out his knee Friday. The team is hoping he misses no more than one game, but that seems overly optimistic. It's a shame, too, because Daniels will miss out on facing the Bengals, who have allowed the most fantasy points per game to tight ends. Instead, Colorado State rookie Crockett Gillmore will get the start. For fantasy owners, it's a waste of a terrific matchup.

Deron Williams: ‘Everybody’s pretty much written me off’

There was a time not long ago when Deron Williams was considered to be among the best point guards in the league. His size, speed and court vision were elite, and he regularly was good for games in excess of 20 points and 10 assists.

But ankle problems have limited Williams in recent years, and last season in Brooklyn was his worst statistically since his rookie campaign back in 2006.

He’s feeling much better following offseason surgery, however, and believes there’s no pressure on him to perform after two straight sub-par seasons have taken him out of the national spotlight.

From Mike Mazzeo of ESPN New York:

“Everybody’s pretty much written me off,” Williams told the team’s official website. “People say I’m never gonna be like I once was. I’m on the downhill. And so what pressure do I have?” …

“I’m a lot more confident,” Williams said. “I just didn’t have a lot of confidence in my ankles (the last two seasons). They wouldn’t allow me to do the things I was capable of doing.” …

“He has the looks of a man who is out to prove something,” Kevin Garnett said.

With the loss of Paul Pierce in free agency, Williams is going to need to be more involved offensively for the Nets to succeed. Getting Brook Lopez back will help overall, and with a new coach in Lionel Hollins, the offense will look very different than it did a season ago.

Having a healthy and confident Williams to run it could make a huge difference.

Paul Kitterman was found and left after getting his 'fill of football.' Paul Kitterman was found and left after getting his 'fill of football.' (9News.com)

A Broncos fan who went missing halfway through last Thursday's Chargers-Broncos game was found on Tuesday according to the Denver Post.

Paul Kitterman, a 53-year-old Broncos fan, is apparently asking for privacy (and not getting it ...) after being found in Pueblo and telling police he'd had his "fill of football" and was hoping to vacation somewhere warm.

This sounds understandable if he's a Browns fan, but who's sick of watching Peyton Manning bomb teeters all over the place?

Also, if he was sick of football, why did he go to the football game in the first place?

"We know there are many questions that some of you may have, but for the time being we are asking that you respect there (sic) privacy as they have been through a lot," someone representing the family wrote on Facebook.

Kitterman went to the game at Mile High with "his son and friends" according to reports, and then disappeared without a credit card or a cell phone and with a limited amount of cash.

Thankfully he was found, but some serious questions about why this happened remain. Hopefully Kitterman and his family sort out whatever answers they need to.

Wondering what that route looks like, here's the map linking Sports Authority Field to Pueblo:

Dwight Howard, the Dwight Howard, the "teddy bear." (USATSI)

You might have heard that there was some drama in the Los Angeles Lakers-Houston Rockets game last night. Old pals Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard got into it a little bit, with Bryant appearing to call Howard "soft" after receiving an elbow to the head. Postgame, Bryant didn't seem to think it was a big deal, via the Los Angeles Times' Mike Bresnahan:

"I think it's fantastic," Bryant said. "Elbows are part of the game. Trash-talking is part of the game. I don't know where the NBA became so sensitive."

Bryant, though, said he didn't dislike Howard despite their failed season together.

"He's a teddy bear," he said. "You can't help but like him. I really mean that. He's a really nice kid. But when you're competing and you have a goal in mind . . . certain times we don't see eye to eye."

Ahh, the whole "the NBA is sensitive" angle. That's perfectly on brand for Bryant, who has been morphing into the league's somewhat grumpy elder statesman for the last few years. And calling him a "teddy bear" and a "nice kid" is the best troll move I can imagine.

I'd be surprised if the Lakers and Rockets played more than one competitive game against each other this season -- Houston won 108-90 in the season opener -- but this Bryant-Howard storyline isn't going away. Howard should be extremely annoyed, but it makes these meetings more interesting, doesn't it?

Bryant scored 19 points on 6-for-17 shooting in 29 minutes in his return to regular-season basketball, by the way. Howard only needed to play 21 minutes in the rout, finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds and shooting 7-for-16 from the free throw line.

Pelicans players serve owner dinner in cringe-worthy pregame video

The Spurs had a natural pregame plan for tonight’s season opener – handing out championship rings.

Forced to come up with something original, the Pelicans went with this (hat tip: Zach Harper of Eye on Basketball).

I don’t think anyone meant to be racist with this advertisement/hype video, but nobody involved saw a group of young, mostly black players serving their white “owner” dinner as an uncomfortable image? I’m hunting to blame anyone in particular, but maybe the Pelicans don’t have a proper range of viewpoints in whatever department concocted this skit.

Also: That acting, though.

LeBron James and his family welcomed a daughter this week. (USATSI) LeBron James and his family welcomed a daughter this week. (USATSI)

LeBron James has it all right now. The Cleveland Cavaliers star is set to make his regular season debut back in the wine and gold Thursday, he's won two titles, four MVPs, two Finals MVPs, has two adorable sons, and now according to a report from E! Online, the King has added a princess to his world.

LeBron James' wife, Savannah Brinson, gave birth to their third child on Oct 22 in Ohio, a source reveals to E! News.

The athlete is already a proud papa to two sons, Bryce Maximus James and LeBron James Jr., and most recently went on a romantic getaway with Brinson shortly before the arrival of their little baby girl.

via LeBron James' Wife Savannah Brinson Gives Birth to Baby Girl—Get All the Details! | E! Online.

James hinted in a recent Instagram photo that his daughter's name was set to be Zhuri though there's been no official confirmation since the birth six days ago.

So James has a newborn in the house as he starts his quest for a third title, and his first in Cleveland. Well, it'll give him more time for film review when he's up in the middle of the night feeding her.

James is part of a group of NBA stars who have really focused on fatherhood in the latter parts of their career, including friends Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade. James has always been huge on the idea of family; it's one of the reasons he grew to love sports, he's said, because teammates grew to be like brothers which were missing from a rough family life growing up.

James has someone new to spoil, a kingdom to rebuild, and a media empire (he has two shows on broadcast and multiple film projects in development) to oversee. No rest for the King.

(Final note: Can you imagine in 16 years when that poor girl goes on dates and the boy has to come to James' house to meet her father? "Hi, I'm the 6-8 NBA legend who's worth hundreds of millions of dollars. What are your intentions?")

Bucks unnecessarily guarantee Kendall Marshall’s contract early

Kendall Marshall, whom the Bucks acquired off waivers from the Lakers, had a fully unguaranteed minimum-salary contract with no guarantee date this season.

That means Marshall would make $13,075 per day he remained on the team. If he were still on the roster Jan. 10, the rest of his $915,243 season salary would become become fully guaranteed.

But Milwaukee is guaranteeing Marshall all that money now.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports:

Despite holding the flexibility to wait until January for a decision, the Milwaukee Bucks have guaranteed the contract of point guard Kendall Marshall for the 2014-15 season, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

In technical terms, there’s little reason to guarantee Marshall’s contract now.

This probably isn’t a big deal, though. Marshall, Milwaukee’s backup point guard, is a great value. The Bucks almost certainly weren’t going to waive him anyway.

But what if Marshall gets hurt? What if his contract is necessary to facilitate a trade that wants to waive Marshall?

There are other factors, though. This gives Marshall peace of mind, which could help him play better. It might also endear the Bucks to Marshall, who becomes a free agent next summer.

Perhaps most importantly: It appeases Marshall’s agent, Alex Saratsis who also represents Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Taking a slight chance on having to eat a relative small amount of money, the Bucks gained a little good will.

Kemba Walker re-ups with the Hornets for four years. (Getty) Kemba Walker re-ups with the Hornets for four years. (Getty)

ESPN reports that the Charlotte Hornets have reached a four-year, $48 million extension deal with point guard Kemba Walker.

Walker averaged 17.7 points, 6.1 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game last year but shot just 39 percent from the field. He helped lead the Hornets to the playoffs for the first time since 2009 and has shown significant growth as a playmaker, despite his shooting troubles.

Walker has one of the best crossovers in the league, but his mid-range game struggles so much to mitigate its effects. He played on one of the worst offensive teams in the league last year, and the addition of Lance Stephenson is expected to open the floor for him to a greater degree.

Like with many of the extensions for players coming off of their rookie contracts, the deal looks like a slight overpay under the current CBA and like an underpay after the new media deal with an expanded cap. He's a big part of the team, a willing defender for a guy his size, a playmaker, a speed demon in transition, and a leader for the Hornets who hope to make a serious run in the playoffs.

You're also paying for what Walker wil be in three years, vs what he's at now. He's already shown big-play ability, and we'll see if he develops into the player they believe he can be.

Kelvin Benjamin might be faster than we think he is. (USATSI) Kelvin Benjamin might be faster than we think he is. (USATSI)

College players don't generally have any control over which NFL team drafts them -- unless they're Kelvin Benjamin, apparently.

The Panthers rookie wide receiver told ESPN.com on Tuesday that he purposely ran a slow 40 time at the NFL Combine in February "Because I wanted to play for the Carolina Panthers."

Benjamin was the fifth wide receiver taken in May's NFL Draft. At 28th overall, Benjamin was selected behind Brandin Cooks (20th overall pick), Odell Beckham Jr. (12th), Mike Evans (7th) and Sammy Watkins (4th).

All four receivers selected ahead of Benjamin ran a faster 40 than him at the combine, including Cooks, who ran a 4.33, the fastest time of any receiver. Benjamin recorded an official time of 4.61. It's possible that Benjamin could've been drafted higher if he had been a little faster, but not guaranteed, but apparently, he didn't want that.

Back in August, Benjamin said he was faster than most people think he is, something that could have to do with his tanked 40-time.

So what does this all mean? It means Benjamin might have just started a trend that the NFL would hate. For instance, if Jacksonville had a top-five pick and needed a speedy corner, the corner could just tank at the combine if he absolutely didn't want to play for the Jaguars.

Of course, tanking has its risks. If Benjamin had run a 4.41 -- a time he says he can run -- he might have been picked higher and therefore would be making more money.

Why bring up his tanked 40 now? Only Benjamin knows.
