Jason Peters signed a five-year deal with the Eagles on Wednesday. Jason Peters signed a five-year deal with the Eagles on Wednesday.(USATSI)

Jason Peters was headed into the final year of the contract he signed when the Eagles acquired him from Buffalo in a trade. But he won't make it to free agency as the team locked him down on a five-year deal Wednesday.

Philadelphia announced the deal Wednesday morning and it will keep Peters in uniform with the Eagles through 2018. The deal, per multiple reports, will include $19.55 million in guaranteed money and $51.3 million overall.

Peters played in 16 games in 2013, the first time he's done that since 2006. The 32-year-old tackle was named to the Pro Bowl and was also included on the All-Pro team.

Peters was a big factor in helping LeSean McCoy lead the league in rushing. Despite being on the wrong side of 30 and dealing with myriad injuries (like the pair of Achilles problems Kelly mentioned above), he's one of the more athletic lineman in the game.

Kelly's new offensive approach -- and training regimen -- clearly worked well with Peters and he dominated in 2013.

The Eagles hope he'll have the same success over the next five years.

They're also thrilled about lowering his salary-cap number. Peters was going to take up more than $10 million in salary-cap space in 2014. Extending his deal saves the Eagles money now and lets them be more aggressive in free agency.

Buccaneers QB Mike Glennon will 'absolutely' have to compete for starting job

Buccaneers quarterback Mike Glennon performed well for a rookie after being thrust into the starting job less than a month into the 2013 season. He threw 19 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 13 games, and while fantasy totals don't give you a great picture on how well a quarterback actually played, Glennon had a stretch in the middle of the season where he topped 15 fantasy points in six of seven games. But is he the Buccaneers' starting quarterback for 2014. Maybe, but he'll need to fight for that title. Bucs general manager Jason Licht said the team will be looking to add a veteran signal-caller who can come in and push Glennon for the gig."New coach, new regime, you can't just hand the keys over and say this guy is our starter," Licht said. "You have to see what he is, and competition drives the best out of everybody. So, that's what we'll be looking for."

Michael Vick, Josh McCown, and Matt Cassel are some of the best available free-agent QBs, and they'll be joined by some others who will be released shortly. The Bucs should definitely want to push Glennon, but I think he showed enough as a rookie to say that he could have a real future as Tampa Bay's long-term starter. For fantasy purposes, Glennon is just a mid-range QB2 at the moment who gets marked down because, unlike many other QBs in the league today, he adds zero as a runner.
