One day after Fred Davis was suspended indefinitely by the league for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy, the Redskins tight end was arrested Thursday and charged with driving under the influence, the Washington Post's Mike Jones reports.
On Wednesday, Davis was suspended immediately and without pay following his latest league substance-abuse violation. The 28-year-old former second-round pick was also suspended for the final four games of the 2011 season after he failed a marijuana test.
“I'm disappointed for Fred,” Redskins general manager Bruce Allen said Friday, via the Post. “We really can't comment on the suspension because that's a league matter with Fred. But I heard, like everyone else about what happened yesterday, and that's disappointing.”
After the suspension but before the DUI arrest, Davis released this statement through the NFLPA.
"I would like to clarify the circumstances that resulted in my current suspension," he said. "In the past, I made the mistake of knowingly ingesting a banned substance. For over two years, I've worked very hard to eliminate marijuana from my life, and I have not had a positive test for it since 2011.
"Unfortunately, a couple of months ago I took a supplement that contained a banned substance. I now know that supplements are not regulated by the FDA and may contain banned substances. The NFL Policy is strict, and not knowing that a supplement might contain a banned substance doesn't excuse a violation of the policy.
"I've worked closely with the NFLPA and NFL to resolve this violation, and I will be permitted to apply for reinstatement in the fall. I look forward to staying in football shape, remaining in compliance with the NFL policy, and having a chance to get back on the field to contribute to a team's success next season."
The DUI arrest won't help Davis' efforts to return to the NFL. It also doesn't help that Davis has struggled to stay healthy; he battled an ankle injury last season and appeared in 10 games in 2013, and played in just seven games in 2012 before he landed on injured reservew with a torn Achilles.
Davis, who was drafted out of USC, will be a free agent next month. Allen declined to speculate on the tight end's future in Washington.
“It's too early because I don't know the details of what happened yesterday,” he said. “There's always a different side to the story. Unfortunately we're not able to talk to Fred, because of the suspension. But, he is a resilient guy. He had to overcome a hurdle a few years ago, and he did it. He got injured and he worked hard to come back, and so it's up to Fred what his future holds.”

We already knew Ray Rice and his fiancee, Janay Palmer, were arrested this past weekend in New Jersey after they "struck each other with their hands," but new video obtained by TMZ.com shows what looks to be the ugly end of the dispute.The video allegedly shows Rice lifting and dragging a clearly unconscious Palmer out of a hotel elevator. Rice struggles to move Palmer's body, specifically her legs, completely away from the elevator doors. A man approaches them after a few moments, at which time Palmer seems to gain consciousness.According to a court summons, Rice rendered Palmer unconscious by striking her with his hand. Rice and Palmer are expected to appear in court next week on simple assault-domestic violence charges.
This may still mean little or nothing for Rice's on-field status, but the league will do its due diligence and review the matter. The Ravens remain committed to Rice as a "big part" of their future.
