Report: Texans sign fourth-round pick QB Savage

Tom Savage wasn't the first quarterback taken in the NFL Draft, but he's the highest-drafted quarterback to sign a contract so far. Savage signed a four-year, $2.52 million deal with the Texans on Thursday, according to the Houston Chronicle. Savage's contract includes a $300,000 signing bonus.

Savage was the seventh quarterback taken in the 2014 NFL Draft, behind Blake Bortles, Johnny Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater, Derek Carr, Jimmy Garoppolo and Logan Thomas.

By going in the fourth round, the former Pitt quarterback won't have as much pressure on him as first-rounders like Bortles, Manziel and Bridgewater. And the pick could turn into a steal for the Texans, who got a B from our Derek Stephens for taking Savage.

With Savage under contract, the Texans can officially begin the process of trying to figure who's going to be the starting quarterback in Houston in 2014. Savage will be competing with Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum and T.J. Yates for the starting job.

Savage will get to suit up for the Texans for the first time on Monday when the team kicks off its rookie minicamp.

'Tony Romo to be ready for training camp' - Cowboys team VP



During a conference call with season ticket-holders Tuesday, Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones said that quarterback Tony Romo is on the right path and is fully expected to be ready for training camp. "Yes he will and he's actually progressing great," said Jones. "He's on schedule if not ahead of schedule. He's throwing the ball around, we not only think he'll be ready for opening week, he'll start up at training camp and be ready to go.There was a little concern about the status of Romo after his surgery to fix a herniated disk in December. With the speculation that the team was interested in taking QB Johnny Manziel in the first round, that concern was amplified heading into last week's draft. However, the Cowboys passed on a QB and let Manziel go. This move was an indication that the team was indeed comfortable with how Romo's back is healing and about his status heading into the 2014 campaign.



The VP's proclamation today can be looked at two ways. 1 - He's just saying what he is supposed to say. If the team truly didn't think Romo was progressing as planned, and they didn't take Johnny Football last Thursday, they'd be setting themselves up for endless ridicule. 2 - The team is truly optimistic about Romo.I lean towards believing the second. Romo has always been a favorite of mine. He is a gamer, about as tough as they come and can make plays that remind me of a guy who used to wear #4 in Green Bay.The team need was to improve their defense after allowing the most yards per game in 2013. They took OT Zach Martin in the first round, someone who can help keep Romo upright. But, of their nine total draft picks, seven were spent on defensive players. It was a smart draft for the Cowboys, even if they ticked off some fans who were calling for Manziel.The 'Boys offense should be solid in 2014. With Romo looking like he'll be healthy, expect all their skill position players to be fantasy-relevant. Wide receiver Dez Bryant and running back DeMarco Murray should both be taken in the first two rounds of all drafts. Wide receiver Terrance Williams is a sexy pick to step up to the next level and have a breakout year. Tight end Jason Witten, while aging, is still a top 7-10 tight end. I'll take Cowboys with confidence all day long in my 2014 drafts! Load up and ride on!
