New deal for Cowboys’ Bryant? Jones: ‘A possibility’

Drafted with the 24th pick of the 2010 NFL Draft, Dez Bryant signed a five-year deal with the Cowboys which expires following the 2014 season.

He would, obviously, like some more money. And Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said Friday the team might give it to him soon, with a new contract before the 2014 season "a possibility."

“As we do with any great player in our organization who's nearing the end of a contract, we start to look at it and see how we might structure something going forward,” Jones said on 1310 the Ticket. “I think that's a possibility, yes."

Bryant's a mercurial presence within the Dallas structure, but there's no denying his ability. He gets that, which is why he believes it's time for him to get paid.

"As far as from the receiver standpoint, of course I feel like I'm one of the better receivers in this league,” Bryant said. “But like I said, when it comes to that contract, I'm going to sit back and I'm going to wait and see what happens."

He's coming off his second straight season with more than 1,200 yards receiving and has scored 25 times over the past two years.

There are some off-field and sideline concerns, but Bryant appears to be learning fairly well on the fly.

It should be no surprise that Dallas wants to reward him and keep him around. The Cowboys aren't in a perfect position salary-cap wise, but getting a deal done now would allow them to avoid the franchise tag coming into play (and creating an artificial negotiating floor) and any related in-season distractions.
