Spurs are chasing Toby Alderweireld of Atletico Madrid, writes Neil Moxley in the Sunday People.
The Belgium international is anxious to move away from the Champions League finalists in search of regular first-team football.
And the defender has been recommended to Mauricio Pochettino by his scouts as Tottenham’s new boss seeks to revamp his squad.
Alderweireld, 25, can be used at either right-back or as a centre-half, but it is in the middle of Spurs’ defence where he has been earmarked to play.
However, any deal could hinge on where highly-rated Atletico centre-half Miranda ends up this summer.
The defender has been linked with Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United.
If the Brazilian does move on, that will leave Atletico boss Diego Simeone with a huge hole to fill, and he may then be reluctant to allow Alderweireld to move.

Today News: Aurora soccer club celebrates 50 years
Under a cloudless, powder blue sky against 10 emerald green soccer fields populated by a rainbow of soccer uniforms, the Aurora Youth Soccer Club celebrated its 50th anniversary and its annual season opening at Sheppards Bush Park today.
"It's not just the launch of our soccer season, it's a passage way to summer," club promotion and sponsorship coordinator Louise Dyer enthused. "With the weather co-operating, it's an unbelievably spectacular day."
Players aged five to 18 on 100 teams, hundreds of volunteers and a mass of parents and supporters agreed. So, too, did Newmarket-Aurora MP Lois Brown and Aurora Mayor Geoff Dawe, who opened the two-day tournament and celebrated the club milestone by leading a flag procession.
Brown conveyed written greetings from Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and commended those who donate their time to the club.
"There are so many amazing volunteers who give so much of their time and energy for the youth in our community," she said. "They teach the young people team play and sportsmanship. When that happens, you're looking our for everyone's best interests."
The MP donned a club jersey and quipped about never being a soccer player.
"Our family grew up near Kettleby," she said. "We were eight kids, so we were our own baseball team."
For Dawe, the event was a bit of a homecoming. Around the millennium, he volunteered and coached his daughters, Kathryn and Kristen, who played for the club.
"Soccer is a great game and I think people carry that spirit through life," he said. "My daughters still play house league indoor soccer."
The mayor applauded the volunteers and the club for "50 years of giving back to the community."
Club volunteer and Aurora Parks and Recreation business support manager John Firman has helped out for five years. He attended to watch son Ben, 9, compete on the fields he help prepare. In all, 10 soccer pitches will see non-stop play through Sunday's championship rounds, he said.
Aurora resident Vickie Chen and daughter Ellie, 6, cheered on son and brother Evan, 9, a player for the SkyBlue team.
"He loves it," mom said. "It's always nice to come out and watch. The club is so very well organized."
Attendance at the weekend event is expected to top 5,000, Dyer said. The season kickoff is a June tradition for the club. With the organization celebrating its first half century, the park also featured various vendors, a large inflatable jumping castle, games, contests and entertainers, including a juggler.
"It's like a giant birthday party," she said."We're a youth club, so it's totally appropriate."
Sheppards Bush Park is on Industrial Parkway South, south of Wellington in Aurora. The fun continues through tomorrow evening. Everyone is welcome.
