Josh McRoberts had toe surgery after last season, going easy in Heat camp

Miami signed Josh McRoberts early in free agency, before they knew LeBron James was going to bolt. He was a forward with energy and toughness that fits well in the space-and-pace system Erik Spoelstra is going to run whether LeBron is there or not.

But McRoberts is going to be brought along cautiously because it turns out he had foot surgery just after the end of last season with Charlotte.

Ira Winderman tweeted out the news.

This isn’t that big a deal, as long as he’s healthy now and can be ready to go when the season starts.

Miami is going to lean heavily on McRoberts to form a strong front line with Chris Bosh (who will be making more plays in the post.

I think this can work during the regular season — these are good defensive bigs who can pressure the ball and can work inside and out. The versatility of the Heat players will put real pressure on opposing defenses, plus they have some real talent. (Once the playoffs come and an opponent can zero in on the system, things will be different). The Heat are going to be pretty good, certainly a playoff team out East.

But they need a healthy dose of McRoberts for that. This toe issue should be behind him when the games matter but it’s something to watch.
