RB Jerick McKinnon hits century mark for Vikings
Minnesota running back Jerick McKinnon made the most of his opportunity Sunday. In the Vikings 17-16 loss to Buffalo, McKinnon got the start over RB Matt Asiata and posted his second career 100-plus yard rushing game. The rookie from Georgia Southern gained 103 yards on 19 carries, for an average of 5.4 yards per tote. Running mate Matt Asiata only gained 24 yards on six carries. Barring something unforeseen, McKinnon should get the start next week versus a Tampa Bay defense that allows 128 rushing yards per game and has given up seven touchdowns on the ground.
We've been saying that McKinnon was the more talented of the two remaining running backs after the Adrian Peterson incident. He's finally getting the opportunity to prove it and he is capitalizing on it. He was unable to get in the end zone, to his fantasy game today looks somewhat pedestrian. However, the fact that he got three times the carries that Asiata did and he did more with them tells us all we need to know. McKinnon is going to be the guy to have in the Minnesota backfield. Asiata is still going to be involved, but today's distribution is more likely to be what fantasy owners should expect going forward. With the favorable matchup versus Tampa Bay in Week 8, McKinnon is likely to be a solid RB2 play.
