Geno still believes in himself. (USATSI)
The Jets are a sinking ship, slammed full of multiple captains trying to steer in multiple directions. On board is quarterback Geno Smith, already buried for his play despite being handed a limited group of weapons to work with.
Most people have written off Smith but he still believes in his potential, stating he's shown "flashes" of being "a Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback."
"I've shown flashes of being a Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback, but what we're looking for here is consistency," Smith said Tuesday, via Newsday. "The best teams have consistent quarterback play and I realize that and that's truly what I want to show to the fans and everyone outside the building."
People are going to laugh about this quote (and people are definitely not going to mention Smith said this while doing charitable work, handing out coats to the homeless). That's OK. Smith hasn't been great for most of his two-year career.
But he has flashed at time. Small flashes, but they're flashes nonetheless.
And what do people want? Smith to give up on himself, retire from the NFL and call it a day? He's 24 years old. There's a lot of football ahead for him.
At the very least you know he's tough. No one could play in that market if they weren't.
"If anyone wants to know if I'm the future or the franchise [quarterback], you can just look at the way I've handled myself in the face of adversity," Smith said. "Success is easy to handle at times, but I think the true test of a man is how he handles himself when things aren't going as well."

Panthers QB Derek Anderson will draw the start Sunday
Following Cam Newton's car accident Tuesday, which resulted in two fractured transverse processes in his back, the Panthers have announced that QB Derek Anderson will start Sunday versus Tampa Bay. The team has referred to Newton's status as day-to-day, leaving open the possibility that he will return in Week 16. Believe it or not, the 4-8 Panthers are still in the playoff hunt as they sit only a half game behind the NFC South-leading Falcons and Saints. The news of Newton's injury should not deter Panthers fans or fantasy owners as Anderson has seen this Tampa Bay defense before and performed well. The veteran QB started Week 1 for the then-injured Newton and produced a line of 230 yards, two touchdowns and no turnovers. Anderson has thrown four touchdowns in limited action this season, two of them going to Benjamin.
