EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) It's all in the mindset.

''Scratch, claw, bite, kick, whatever you have to do make a play and win,'' Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake explained after Monday night's dull but effective slugfest with the New York Jets ended in a 16-13 Miami victory.

''It's December,'' added rookie receiver Jarvis Landry. ''The only thing that matters is winning, no matter how you get it done.''

The Dolphins found the right formula to stay in the AFC playoff race: Simply let the Jets run the ball all night, and wait for New York to make mistakes - something the Jets have done quite well all season.

Caleb Sturgis' third field goal, from 26 yards with 1:57 remaining, gave Miami (7-5) the comeback victory over its archrival.

New York (2-10) rushed for 277 yards on 49 carries, but made enough key errors in the second half to lose.

''Can't believe we're 2-10,'' Jets coach Rex Ryan said, shaking his head and pausing. ''It's a joke.''

The Dolphins remained a factor in the wild-card race thanks to special teams; Landry's eight receptions; Lamar Miller's 4-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter; and plenty of defense when the Jets needed to pass.

New York's Geno Smith threw only 13 times, fewest in the NFL this season, and gained 49 yards. The usually reliable Nick Folk missed two field goals.

All of that offset a season high on the ground as Chris Johnson had his best performance for the Jets with 105 yards.

''We had to draw a line in the dirt. No more,'' Wake said of his team's stinginess after halftime. ''We came out in the second half scheme-wise the same, but guys played the way they're supposed to play.''

Sturgis also made field goals of 43 and 44 yards.

After trailing most of the way, Miami tied it on Miller's run with 10:24 remaining. That brought the loudest cheers of the night; thousands of Dolphins fans at MetLife Stadium braved the wet, windy conditions.

Jets problems with penalties on special teams hurt them all night, and a holding call against Saalim Hakim set up the Dolphins at New York's 39 on the tying drive. On the winning possession, backup tight end Dion Sims had catches of 18 and 17 yards.

The Jets kept pounding the ball effectively. They even got into field goal position after Miami made it 13-13. But Koa Misi's sack pushed New York back to the Miami 27 and Folk missed wide left for the second time. Folk had made 18 of 20 entering the game.

That's the way the Jets' season has gone, of course.

''I feel sick,'' Ryan said. ''We can't buy a win.''

Early on, Greg Salas, with his fourth team in four pro seasons, scored his first career touchdown. But the receiver didn't get it through the air, instead scoring on a well-conceived reverse on which the Dolphins had no one close to him until he reached the 2. He dived into the end zone to cap an 85-yard drive, but that ended his night; Salas hurt a hamstring.

Sturgis missed a 43-yard field goal on the next possession for Miami, further boosting New York's confidence. The Jets took the ball into Dolphins territory for the third successive series, and got more points on Folk's 40-yard field goal.

As New York kept grinding away on the ground - it had 210 yards rushing in the opening half - it also ate up the clock. But Folk missed from 48 yards and Miami took advantage on Sturgis' 43-yard field goal to end the half.

Sturgis added his 44-yarder to start the second half, and Folk followed with a 45-yarder that bounced off the crossbar and through, making it 13-6.

Then came two huge plays that led to, well, nothing.

Dion Jordan partially blocked Ryan Quigley's punt, resulting in a 6-yard kick to the New York 41. It was the second straight week an opponent got a piece of a Quigley punt.

On the next play, though, Miller bobbled Ryan Tannehill's short pass and the ball squirted into cornerback Darrin Walls' hands. Walls slipped, got up and returned the interception 25 yards to the Dolphins 30. But Wake got a sack - he leads Miami with 9 1-2 - and that forced a punt.

NOTES: Tannehill was 25 of 35 for 235 yards. Smith threw for 65 yards on his seven completions, but also was sacked twice for minus-16 yards ... New York's previous rushing high this season was 218 vs. New England. ... Dozens of Jets alums were on hand, including three living Hall of Famers: Joe Namath, Curtis Martin and Don Maynard. They celebrated former owner Leon Hess and former receiver Wayne Chrebet's induction into the team's ring of honor. ... Dolphins WR Brian Hartline left with a knee injury.

Redskins WR DeSean Jackson may not practice due to bruised fibula, expected to play this week

Despite the fact that Redskins wide receiver DeSean Jackson could barely walk off of the field and out of Lucas Oil Stadium after Sunday's loss to the Colts, it would seem like the deep threat is a long shot to play in Week 14. Not so, according to Dianna Marie Russini of NBC 4 in Washington. She reported Monday that Jackson "probably won't practice this week, but he should play Sunday" when the Redskins host the Rams.

Jackson was reportedly limping heavily after the game. He actually sustained the right leg injury earlier in the third quarter. It was the aggravation soon thereafter that left Jackson on the turf in obvious pain. Fortunately, he doesn't have any broken bones, but his playing status is far from certain. The Redskins could really use D-Jax to take the top off of the Rams' aggressive defense. If he can't go, expect Colt McCoy to pepper tight end Jordan Reed and wide receiver Pierre Garcon with targets all day long. Those two combined for 20 in Week 13.

Report: Hornets aggressively talking trade, willing to deal anyone besides Kemba Walker and Al Jefferson

The 4-14 Hornets are the NBA’s most disappointing team.

Last season, a plucky Bobcats team won 43 games and made a surprising run to the playoffs. Rebranded the Hornets and infused with talent, Charlotte appeared ready to take the next step.

Instead, the Hornets’ once-stout defense has collapsed and their already-troublesome offense has fallen even further.

So, Charlotte is seeking major changes.

Zach Lowe of Grantland:

The Hornets have been aggressive making trade calls, according to sources across the league.

The Hornets are searching for upgrades on the wing and at power forward, per those sources, and they are willing to talk turkey on basically anyone other than Kemba Walker and Al Jefferson.

Jefferson altered the franchise’s entire arc last season, and Walker just signed a four-year, $48 million contract extension. It’s no surprise they’re going nowhere.

One name not on the list of protected assets: Lance Stephenson, who’s faltering after signing with Charlotte this summer and assuming major responsibility. The Hornets can’t trade Stephenson until Dec. 15, but they sure can discuss it with other teams before then. That they’d be willing to so soon after signing him could crater Stephenson’s already diminishing value, but he’s still talented and young. There will be interest, even if it’s less than ever would have been expected.

That Charlotte is getting so aggressive on the trade market could indicate a couple things. Either Michael Jordan and co. are impatient on letting this group jell, or they see major problems that need to be addressed quickly.

Hope, on paper, is not lost for the Hornets. They’ve already played 10 games against the powerful Western Conferences – two more than any other Eastern Conference team and four more than any Eastern Conference team in playoff position. Charlotte hasn’t fared well against the West (1-9), but the schedule only gets easier from here.

But if the Hornets’ problems run deeper than a tough early schedule, it’s not to soon to get proactive.

The Colts could become the first team to clinch a playoff berth. (USATSI) The Colts could become the first team to clinch a playoff berth. (USATSI)

A few teams made statements in Week 13, including several that took home key road wins:

  • Philadelphia won at Dallas to stake a claim to the NFC East lead

  • Green Bay outplayed New England in the latest mega-matchup

  • Seattle tamed San Francisco on the road and jumped back into a playoff slot

  • Cincinnati earned a nail-biting win at Tampa Bay to become the lone AFC North winner of the week

  • Denver went to frigid Kansas City and completed a season sweep of the Chiefs

  • San Diego jumped into the AFC No. 5 seed position with a road win at Baltimore

We lost the New York Giants and Washington Redskins from playoff contention during Week 13 but still have 26 teams left, which is the lowest number of teams alive for the playoffs with four weeks to play since 2009 (26).

As we head into Week 14, we have one playoff clinching scenario and it's in the AFC.

The Indianapolis Colts can clinch the AFC South division title with:

1) A WIN + Houston loss

A Colts win at Cleveland next week will get Indy to 9-7 at worst and a Texans loss at Jacksonville will leave Houston at 9-7 at best. Houston can still split the season head-to-head series on Week 15 and they could tie Indy in division record at 4-2. However, Indianapolis would win the tiebreaker with Houston on record against common opponents at 8-4 vs. 6-6. Thus, an Indy win and Houston loss clinches the AFC South for the Colts.

Other playoff picture notes heading into Week 14:

  • Philadelphia can clinch the NFC East title in two weeks by EITHER winning their next two games at home against Seattle and Dallas OR losing to Seattle AND Dallas loses to Chicago AND Philadelphia beats Dallas in Week 15.

  • If Arizona continues to stumble (they have a tough finish with Kansas City and Seattle at home and St. Louis and San Francisco on the road), Green Bay would have the inside track on the No. 1 seed with their head-to-head win over Philadelphia.

  • Dallas is disadvantaged in wild card ties as all four of their losses are against conference foes (Seattle and Detroit both have two conference losses), but Dallas does have a head-to-head win against Seattle if they are matched up in a two-team tie.

  • With Arizona's loss on Sunday, Seattle now controls its destiny for a division title as they are one game back and can sweep the Cardinals with a win at Arizona in Week 16.

  • Even with their loss at Green Bay, New England still is in control of the No. 1 seed in the AFC as they have head-to-head wins against all three other division leaders (Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Denver). HOWEVER, if New England loses at San Diego next week and Miami beats the N.Y. Jets on Monday night and Baltimore next week, Miami could take the division lead with a win at New England in Week 15 due to a season sweep of the Patriots.

  • Cincinnati now has a 1.5 game lead in the AFC North as all three other division teams lost in Week 13, but the Bengals still have three division games left including a pair against Pittsburgh which starts at home in Week 14.

  • With two games left against Cincinnati, Pittsburgh controls its destiny for the AFC North title despite being 1.5 games back of Cincinnati and currently losing a three-way tiebreaker to Baltimore. If Pittsburgh wins out to go 11-5, Baltimore could get to 11-5 but would be the only other team as they play Cleveland and the Steelers would win a tiebreaker on division record. If Cleveland gets to 11-5 to tie Pittsburgh (including a win over Baltimore), Pittsburgh and Cleveland will tie on division record and common opponents, but the Steelers would win on conference record (9-3 to 7-5).

  • If Indianapolis loses next week and Houston wins, the Texans would be back in the division race as they would travel to Indy in Week 15 to attempt to tie the Colts, although they would still trail Indianapolis in record against common opponents.

  • Even with the loss to Denver at home, Kansas City still has the lead among the 7-5 teams for the No. 6 seed based on conference record.

Based on how teams are performing, upcoming schedules and tiebreakers, here's how I see the season playing out for conference seeds:

AFC: 1) New England 2) Denver 3) Indianapolis 4) Cincinnati 5) Miami 6) San Diego

NFC: 1) Green Bay 2) Philadelphia 3) Seattle 4) New Orleans 5) Arizona 6) Detroit

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The defending NFC South champion Carolina Panthers looked like contenders in name only.

The Minnesota Vikings quickly swatted them aside.

Adam Thielen and Everson Griffen each returned blocked punts for touchdowns, the first time in 24 years one team had two in the same game, and the Vikings handed the Panthers their sixth straight loss with a 31-13 victory Sunday.

''I don't know about demoralizing the other team, but I do know that when you score on defense or you score on special teams, your odds of winning a football game go way up,'' Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said, ''and I tell the team that.''

Teddy Bridgewater threw for two scores without a turnover, and Griffen had two of the four sacks by the Vikings (5-7) against Cam Newton. The Panthers (3-8-1) entered the week just a half-game out of first place, but they again stumbled out of their bye. Now 0-4 under coach Ron Rivera following the annual in-season week off, the Panthers play at division leader New Orleans (5-7) next week.

''All that other stuff, playoff talk, that's irrelevant,'' tight end Greg Olsen said. ''We've just got to win a game.''

This was the seventh-coldest game in Vikings history, with a kickoff temperature of 12 degrees and a wind chill well below zero. They're playing outside this year for the first time since 1981. In an otherwise-ordinary late-season game between two losing teams, the home team's punt coverage unit made this a must-see first half.

Thielen burst through the middle in the first quarter, and he was so far in the backfield that when he leaped at Brad Nortman's attempt he had to pull his hands back to avoid a penalty.

''I just kind of came free. No one really blocked me, and I knew I was going to block it,'' Thielen said.

Thielen landed on the turf, picked up the prize on his way for a 30-yard touchdown and leaped into the corner seats to celebrate.

Then after the first of two field goals by Graham Gano, Nortman came out to punt again with the Panthers facing fourth-and-5 at midfield in the second quarter. This time, Jasper Brinkley charged up the middle to swat the ball down. Griffen snatched it up and went 43 yards to the end zone for a 21-3 lead.

Rivera didn't name the players who missed their blocking assignments, but he said he saw no problem with the protection scheme.

''I'm just focused on catching the ball and kicking it. I don't even see them coming,'' Nortman said.

The last time a team scored on two blocked punts in the same NFL game was on Sept. 30, 1990, when Kansas City did it against Cleveland. This was the fifth time it happened in league history, according to STATS research dating to 1940.

This was also the first blocked punt return touchdown by the Vikings since Oct. 12, 1986, the longest active NFL streak without one.

Lost a little in the hubbub was one of the better performances Bridgewater has put together in his eight-game career. He led the Vikings on just their third opening-drive touchdown of the season and their first since his debut on Sept. 28, a bootleg throw to Kyle Rudolph from 4 yards out.

''You want to see your team stepping toward success and taking a step in the right direction,'' Jennings said. ''Today, that's what took place, and it starts with him.''

Late in the second quarter, Bridgewater guided an 11-play, 80-yard drive to push the lead to 22 points. Greg Jennings caught a short pass near the sideline and slipped through the secondary for a 17-yard score with 16 seconds left.

''We knew we just had to jump on these guys early in the game. Our guys did a great job,'' Bridgewater said.

Newton hit Philly Brown for a 32-yard touchdown with a heave on fourth-and-4 in the third quarter to bring the Panthers within 28-13, but the former first overall draft pick had another unremarkable game.

Newton was intercepted in the fourth quarter by Josh Robinson, who was beaten by Brown for the earlier score, and finished 18 for 35 for 194 yards. He gained 49 yards on nine runs, and Jonathan Stewart had a season-high 85 yards rushing on 12 attempts. The Panthers outgained the Vikings 348-210 in total yards.

NOTES: Xavier Rhodes had three pass breakups for the Vikings and helped limit Kelvin Benjamin to five catches for 56 yards. He was targeted 12 times. ... Panthers injuries: FS Tre Boston (ankle) and RB DeAngelo Williams (hand). ... Vikings injuries: DT Sharrif Floyd (knee) and LB Anthony Barr (knee).

PITTSBURGH (AP) The standings say the New Orleans Saints are in first place. For once, it looked that way on the field too.

Drew Brees peppered the end zone with footballs. The defense harassed Ben Roethlisberger into costly mistakes. Head coach Sean Payton and defensive coordinator Rob Ryan exchanged words on the sideline.

Just another day at work for the volatile NFC South leaders, even Sunday's 35-32 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers upped New Orleans' record to a mediocre 5-7.

''It's not time to reflect,'' Brees said. ''We're full steam ahead. We have four regular season games here that are going to determine our season.''

Judging by its best four quarters in a month, New Orleans finally appears ready make a move. Six days and 1,100 miles removed from an ugly home loss to Baltimore, the Saints appeared reborn. Brees threw five touchdowns for the ninth time in his career. Kenny Stills caught five passes for a career-high 162 yards and a score as New Orleans ended a three-game losing streak by restoring a little bit of respectability to the worst division in the league.

The Steelers (7-5) kept New Orleans tight end Jimmy Graham in check with no catches, but it hardly mattered. Brees worked Pittsburgh's secondary over anyway. Ben Watson, Marques Colston, Erik Lorig and Nick Toon hauled in touchdowns as New Orleans romped.

''The ball just happened to go other places today,'' Brees said. ''There were great matchups and we were able to make big plays in the passing game, so it was just one of those crazy games where for whatever reason, he didn't get a catch.''

Watson, Lorig and Toon hadn't been in the end zone all season. It changed during a 25-minute stretch in which the Saints turned a 6-0 deficit into a 35-16 lead. Signs of life from one of the NFL's most embattled defenses helped. The Saints picked off Roethlisberger twice and Brees converted both miscues into scores.

It hardly mattered that Payton and Ryan had a heated exchange in the third quarter when New Orleans was forced to call time-out because the defense had 12 players on the field. Consider it the cost of doing business.

''That's just me being fired up,'' Payton said.

There was plenty to get excited about on a day the Saints controlled nearly from start to finish as they ended a three-game losing streak. A couple of cosmetic touchdowns by the Steelers in the final 3 minutes made the score much closer than the reality.

''As long as I've been here, we never lost three games in a row, especially at home, so this was a big win today,'' linebacker Junior Galette said. ''We entered this game professionally and went out there and did the job.''

Ben Roethlisberger passed for 435 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw two interceptions for the Steelers. Le'Veon Bell caught eight passes for a career-high 159 yards and also added 95 yards and a touchdown on the ground, but Pittsburgh was never really in it over the final three quarters.

Pittsburgh opted to focus on Graham, often double-covering one of the NFL's biggest weapons. No biggie. Brees completed 19 of 27 passes to nine different receivers Mark Ingram ran for 122 yards as the Saints effectively counterpunched with touchdowns while the Steelers piled up field goals.

''Offensively, defensive and on special teams, we can play with the best teams in the league,'' Ingram said. ''As long as we don't hurt ourselves, we can win football games.''

The passes that Roethlisberger zipped so crisply to open receivers during while throwing for an NFL-record 12 touchdown passes in his last two home starts sailed high and out of reach and occasionally into the arms of New Orleans defenders. Roethlisberger's problems started early and were exacerbated when he smacked his right hand off the helmet of Saints linebacker Curtis Lofton late in the first quarter.

New Orleans defensive end Cameron Jordan tipped a pass by Roethlisberger early in the third quarter and caught it for his first career interception to give the Saints the ball at the Pittsburgh 15. It took Brees two plays to hit Toon for an 11-yard score to make it 21-6. The Steelers responded with a 13-play, 83-yard drive that ended with Bell sprinting around left end for his third score of the year.

Pittsburgh's momentum lasted 2:31, or the time it took New Orleans to go 89 yards. Stills covered the last 69 all by himself, badly beating Pittsburgh cornerback Ike Taylor on a double move. He raced across the goal line to make it 28-16 and Brees completed his best day of the season with a 3-yard lob to Colston.

NOTES: Steelers DE Brett Keisel left in the third quarter with a triceps injury and did not return. ... Graham was also held without a catch in a Week 7 loss to Detroit. ... Pittsburgh fell to 6-2 after its bye week under coach Mike Tomlin. ... The Saints host Carolina next Sunday while the Steelers travel to Cincinnati.

Multiple sources within Washington's organization believe it is a forgone conclusion former starting quarterback Robert Griffin III will not back be back with the team in 2015, with the disconnect between him and the team's decision-makers growing so great, and the desire to retain him so scant, that an offseason divorce is inevitable.

The division between Griffin and the team -- the weekly stories of his leadership and the endless gossip -- and his being benched for the final month of the season for the second straight year, by two different head coaches, have left the situation beyond repair, the sources believe, with a trade the most likely end-game. Griffin has become damaged goods, mentally and physically, in Washington after a tumultuous three seasons there since the team gave up a ransom of draft picks to move up and select him second overall, and with him no longer beloved by owner Dan Snyder, and receiving anything but an endorsement from coach Jay Gruden, and Colt McCoy viewed as a better option right now, bringing him back would only further pollute the situation.

Other executives around the league, contacted privately for their thoughts on the situation, almost unanimously agreed the Redskins would trade him (though one posited, with the trade value likely to be so low, Snyder and general manager Bruce Allen would opt to keep Griffin rather than face the ignominy of dealing so cheaply after parting with three first-round picks to land him).

Of the five evaluators contacted about Griffin, one believed Washington might be able to get a conditional third-round pick for him, two believed a fourth-rounder was fair value, one said a fifth-round pick and one suggested a sixth-round pick that moves as high as a fourth-rounder based on how much and how well Griffin plays with his new team.

Griffin is set to make $3.3 million in 2015, the final year of his rookie deal, with the potential for a team to execute his fifth-year option for 2016, at the hefty price of likely over $16 million. There will be, as always, a good number of teams in the market for quarterbacks, with the Bucs, Jets, Rams, Bills, Texans, among those likely looking for starters, while quarterback-minded coaches like Andy Reid and Chip Kelly are always looking for developmental projects to bring along and rebuild.

These executives all believed there would be a market for Griffin, but, given his history of injuries, declining production, clashes with coaches, locker room issues and higher salary -- and with other teams assuming the Redskins might ultimately release him rather than continue this dysfunction -- they would have limitations on how much they would be willing to part with to land him.
