MIAMI -- Miami Heat forward Luol Deng met with the media on Friday and, predictably, most of the questions were about Danny Ferry and the Atlanta Hawks. Deng had commented on the remarks read by the Hawks general manager on a conference call in a statement earlier this month, but this was the first time he answered questions about it.

When the initial reports about Hawks co-owner Bruce Levenson came out and his admission statement about a racist email he sent, Deng didn't think anything about his possible involvement. As the Hawks situation was exposed more and more with reports of Ferry making offensive comments about African culture in a conference call, Deng's phone was starting to get active with phone calls, text messages, and emails. Instead of reacting to something so hurtful and offensive, he wanted to sit back and see how the story and situation were developing.

After talking with Ferry, he doesn't believe the Hawks' general manager who took a leave of absence is racist and Deng would love to make this a positive learning experience for everybody to benefit from.

"I really think one of the hardest things to do as a human being – and something we should do more often – is to forgive," Deng said at the Heat's media day. "I do forgive Danny. It's not something that I want to hold onto for the rest of my career and the rest of my life. I had the chance to speak to Danny and I really believe he's sorry for what he said.

And whether it came from him or wherever it came from, the main focus really should be how we move on forward. What are we going to do about it? Instead of just pointing fingers and trying to go after each other and be mad at each other, I think everything happens for a reason and we could turn this situation of something so negative and something bad that words that were used to describe me and describe where I came from and really turn it into something positive."

The Hawks and Ferry weren't just a random organization that had something offensive said about a player on a different team during a conference call. During Deng's free agency process, he considered the Hawks as a possible destination and wonders if he had signed with them, would the comments have ever come out?

"Atlanta was one of the teams that I really wanted," Deng admitted. "If I was with them, maybe it wouldn't have come out. You don't know."

Instead, Deng signed with the Heat on a two-year deal worth nearly $20 million. He'll be the "replacement" for LeBron James at the traditional small forward position in the Heat's lineup. But as has been the standard during Deng's 10-year career, his work will go beyond the court and what he does for the Heat. He wants to make sure this situation with Ferry and those comments have a bigger impact than just this upsetting moment.

"Obviously you have to be upset," Deng said. "The word 'anger,' I don't know how often I would be angry at words. Those are just words. I'm upset those were used to just describe myself or describe where I came from. With everything that I've done, like I said in my statement, I wish it was just about basketball. There was no need for it. It's how I deal with it, how we're going to deal with it, and turn it into something positive.

Like I said in my statement, we can't look at everybody or look at that statement and think this is how everybody is. Whoever used those words, you know Danny, if he could take the time back, then we would have never known this stuff was going on. Now we have a chance to put an end to it and just make sure things like this don't happen again. We can really educate people.”

In Deng's statement in response to the remarks, he talked about the sense of pride his African culture gives him, and believes it defines him in a positive way. The next step is figuring out how to turn this into a positive. Deng isn't quite sure what can be done, but would like to figure out how to work with Ferry and an organization to help educate people based on this incident.

"Just one day so we can look back and say, ‘This happened and it was something negative but look how they turned it around and how it became something positive,'" Deng explained. "I'm really not the type of person that's going to hold on and be angry at someone and be angry at Danny. I don't think Danny's racist. I really don't know Danny to describe him as a person. I just know who he is. That's just what I believe in and I'd like to put it behind me and move forward. But I would really love if we could do something positive out of it.”

Joe Johnson on last season under Jason Kidd: ‘We practiced, but, you know … not really’

The Nets were one of five teams that held their Media Day on Friday, and with a new head coach in Lionel Hollins in place, there were a few subtle shots lobbed at the departed Jason Kidd.

Kidd was a rookie head coach last year in Brooklyn, and while he deserves a good amount of credit for turning the team around after the first of the year and guiding the Nets to victory in the first round of the playoffs, the sketchy way in which he left has the players less than loyal when discussing the way things went down behind the scenes.

Hollins talked about noticing a lack of cohesiveness when watching the team from afar, which he believes can be cleaned up by putting the work in during practice. Joe Johnson was asked about this specific aspect of his new coach’s plan, and he couldn’t keep a straight face when recounting the way Kidd handled (or did not handle) practices last season.

Buccaneers RB Doug Martin, WR Vincent Jackson practicing in full

As the Buccaneers try to recover from their own demolition at the hands the Falcons, a couple of their top offensive weapons look good to go for Week 4. Running back Doug Martin and wide receiver Vincent Jackson are practicing fully this week despite some injury concerns.Martin didn't play in Atlanta due to a knee injury while Jackson suffered a slight wrist fracture in the early stages of the game. However, both are currently expected to play Sunday.

Of course, Martin practiced multiple times last week before he was ruled out shortly before Thursday's kickoff. We'll see if he experiences any setbacks this week, but everything seems pretty sunny right now.The wrist fracture, as slight as it might be, will obviously impact Jackson in some way. However, he will play through it. While he is off to a slow start -- 10 catches, 102 yards, one score so far -- I wouldn't sell low on him just yet because perhaps the Bucs' forced switch to quarterback Mike Glennon in place of the injured Josh McCown will kick-start Jackson. The new QB can't possibly be any worse than the old QB.Also, this is a favorable matchup for Jackson, facing Pittsburgh's fairly toothless and ailing defense. He is a fine WR2. Martin is more of a risk-reward RB2. The matchup for him isn't scary either, but he has a lot to prove after missing two games following his 16-yard performance in Week 1.

The Jets might have to scale back the offense for Geno Smith. (Getty Images) The Jets might have to scale back the offense for Geno Smith. (Getty Images)

Through three games this season, Geno Smith has shown potential, but he's also looked very much like a second-year quarterback struggling to find consistency from one week to the next, and sometimes one play to the next. Monday's Bears-Jets get-together was a microcosm of that, and it's why offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg hinted this week that he'll scale back the offense because he "put too much on (Smith's) plate."

That should also put to rest any speculation that backup Michael Vick could see more playing time.

"Oh, no, we're right in the middle of developing a young quarterback," Mornhinweg said Thursday, via ESPN.com. "We're going to go through some ups and downs now, where you go through a little dip. You have to motor through. You have to be tough, mentally.

"We need to develop Geno. Listen, Geno is going to be just fine. ... To be great, in many cases, you have to go through some failures -- and sometimes it's on a Monday night."

Smith threw a pick-six on the Jets' first possession and another interception led to a Bears field goal. New York lost 27-19. Through three games, he ranks 30th in Football Outsiders' QB efficiency metric, ahead of only Jake Locker, Matt Cassel, Ryan Tannehill, Josh McCown and Chad Henne.

Still, Smith has shown improvement from his rookie season. His completion percentage is up from 55.8 to 63.1 and his TD-to-INT ratio has gone from 0.58 to 0.75. Ideally, it would be north of 1.0, but again, this is a process.

"We're right in the middle of that process," Mornhinweg said. "Sometimes you have to go through some bad stuff to be great. ... I just relied a little too much on (Smith). There will be a time, hopefully quickly, where we can do that. But that game, looking back on it, I thought I put a little too much on his plate and I could've helped him in a couple of different ways."

So we wait. Meanwhile, Smith has Mornhinweg's full support.

"I have great confidence in Geno," he said. "Maybe I had too much confidence last week."

Bears WR Brandon Marshall misses another practice Thursday

Brandon Marshall missed practice again Thursday with an ankle issue. Marshall suffered the injury in Week 1 but managed to play through it for two consecutive weeks. In Week 2, he caught three touchdown passes, but in Week 3, Marshall aggravated the injury and managed just one catch for 6 yards. He will likely be listed as questionable on the Bears' final injury report tomorrow.

This doesn't sound good for Marshall at all. He had to leave the Bears' Week 3 game for several minutes after reinjuring the ankle, and he didn't seem able to run or cut well after he returned. That showed up in his stat line. With Alshon Jeffery seemingly back at 100 percent, don't be surprised if the Bears hold Marshall out of Week 4. At this point, fantasy owners should pencil Marshall out of their starting lineups and have a backup option ready. If Marshall is unable to go against the Packers, Jeffery's value would get a slight bump up this week.

Roger Goodell sent out a Friday memo to NFL owners. (USATSI) Roger Goodell details the NFL's actions on domestic violence in a Friday memo to NFL owners. (USATSI)

The NFL sent a memo Friday to all owners and team presidents giving an update on the steps the league has taken to address incidents of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Of the five points laid out by commissioner Roger Goodell in the memo obtained by CBSSports.com, perhaps the most interesting was the revelation that the league has met with the U.S. Army to discuss the military's approach to "addressing issues of misconduct, including the provision of support services to families and victims."

In the memo, Goodell also said the league had met for several hours with NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith on Friday to continue talking about the issues of "personal conduct, including training, education, family services, and the disciplinary process."

The league also said the public service announcement commercial addressing domestic violence that ran during Thursday's game between the Giants and Redskins would also be seen this Sunday and Monday during NFL game commercials. The value of the promotional time, Goodell wrote, is close to $3 million.

Here's one of those PSAs, via USA Today.

As far as the meeting with the Army, former military man Mike Freeman, currently with Bleacher Report, had this to write:

Buccaneers RB Doug Martin says he's '100 percent'

Doug Martin told reporters Thursday that he's "100 percent" and expects to play Week 4. Martin was held out of the Bucs' last two games due to a knee injury but returned to full practice this week. With Martin out, Bobby Rainey carried the rushing load for the team. When Martin returns, the two backs will likely split carries. On Sunday, the Bucs face a Steelers team that has allowed 130 rushing yards per game through the first three weeks.

It's always encouraging to hear a player say that he's at full strength, but the better sign is that Martin has been practicing fully this week. He was close to playing last Thursday night, so he looks like a good bet in Week 4. But Martin's fantasy value will be limited by the presence of Rainey as they will likely see close to an even split of the carries. Martin is a decent RB2 play this weekend, but the lack of volume may hold down his fantasy value in the future.

What happens if the Lakers want Kobe Bryant to hold up? (USATSI) What happens if the Lakers want Kobe Bryant to hold up? (USATSI)

At a media meeting with Los Angeles Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak Friday, Kupchak told reporters that the plan for this season does include management of Kobe Bryant's body, including minutes restrictions and possibly games.

Both Kupchak and Byron Scott have said that Bryant looks to be in incredible shape. But he's 36 and coming off two major leg injuries. The Lakers have him at over $24 million per year for the next two years. They've got to keep him on the court.

Whether Byrant takes to that kind of restriction will be the question. Scott has the support of Bryant, who lobbied for him publicly during the offseason. But anyone telling Bryant when to come out doesn't work very often, and Bryant's competitiveness is obsessive. It's just not something he's good at, keeping himself back. He'll want to prove something, to the world and to himself. This is a storyline worth keeping track of as the season goes on.

Aron Baynes re-signs with Spurs for one year

When Eric Bledsoe re-signed with the Suns, Aron Baynes became the last free agent with an outstanding qualifying offer.

The Spurs waited as Baynes explored overseas options. They considered signing Gustavo Ayon as a replacement. They discussed a sign-and-trade.

And finally, they got a deal done.

Marc Stein of ESPN:

Shams Charania of RealGM:

Baynes gives the Spurs 14 of 15 players back from last year’s championship team, the only difference being rookie Kyle Anderson replacing Damion James, who signed with the Wizards.

In addition to those 15 players with guaranteed contracts, San Antonio also has JaMychal Green ($60,000 guaranteed), Bryce Cotton ($50,000 guaranteed) and Josh Davis ($20,000 guaranteed).

At one point, I thought there was a chance the Spurs would waive Baynes if he accepted the qualifying offer in order to keep one of those three. But considering they offered him more than his qualifying offer ($1,115,243), there are strong indications they want to keep him.

The Spurs even exceeded the max they could pay Baynes through early bird rights ($1,380,526), meaning they dipped into the mid-level or bi-annual exception. The bi-annual exception is worth $2,077,000, so – if Stein is rounding – it’s possible Baynes took that. However, that would prevent San Antonio from using it next summer. Considering they probably have no use for the mid-level exception at this point, the Spurs probably paid Baynes through that.

Jerry Jones hopes this is the year the Cowboys return to the postseason. (USATSI) Jerry Jones hopes this is the year the Cowboys return to the postseason. (USATSI)

If nothing else, Jerry Jones is the eternal optimist, even if the face of sometimes overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

After a season-opening loss to the 49ers followed by wins over the Titans and Rams, the 2-1 Cowboys host the 1-2 Saints on Sunday night. And Jones likes where his team is and, hopefully, where they're going.

"I think we've shown some things that would cause you to hold in discounting us," Jones said during his weekly radio show on 105.3 The Fan (via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram). "That's an awkward way of saying that we should be looked at out of the corner of peoples' eye."

In each of the last three seasons, the Cowboys have finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs. In each instance, the team needed only a Week 17 win to qualify for the postseason. It never happened. Meanwhile, Jones knows talk is cheap.

(By the way, CBSSports.com's John Breech picked the Cowboys to make the playoffs. We talked about those seemingly long odds in the latest Eye on Football Podcast, conveniently embedded here.)

"We've got to do it, though," he continued. "We've got to put it together, with putting the right people on the field as it relates to injury, and that's happening for us. We could have [Henry] Melton out there this weekend.

"We could have [Rolando] McClain out there this weekend. We could have [Tyrone] Crawford moving over as the No. 3 tackle, and then moving out to end, why? Because Anthony Spencer is going to be out there taking some snaps.

"Now that's serious stuff," Jones said. "Get [Justin] Durant back in there, get [Rolando] McClain back at linebacker. Now, all of a sudden we've got about three or four players out there that arguably are the best defensive players that we hadn't had the last two or three games. That's a big deal. And if we're that, then I think [Tony] Romo's certainly getting his timing down. I like the experience our offensive line is getting and has gotten in these three games. Yeah, We need to be glanced at over here."

Also needed: More glitz and glamour.

During the same appearance, Jones offered up praise for Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, the same man Jones fired after the 2012 season.

And who knows, maybe Ryan will even be a great head coach for the Cowboys one day (which, frankly, would be the least surprising development ever).

Dolphins RB Knowshon Moreno aiming for Week 6 return

Knowshon Moreno is targeting the Dolphins' Week 6 matchup with the Packers as his return date from a dislocated elbow, which he suffered in Week 2. Moreno's original timetable was set at four-to-eight weeks, and a Week 6 return would put him at the very early end of that estimate. In Moreno's absence, Lamar Miller carried the load for the Dolphins in Week 3, racking up 132 total yards on 19 touches.

Moreno will almost certainly be out Week 4 and Week 5 and should be considered uncertain at best for Week 6. While it's encouraging to hear that he's making good enough progress in his recovery to be considering the Packers game for his return, he's by no means guaranteed to make it back that quickly. Miller has performed well in Moreno's stead, and when Moreno returns, it seems likely that the two backs will find themselves with an even workload split. This week, with Moreno out and the Dolphins matching up against a terrible Raiders defense, Miller is a very solid RB2 in fantasy.

49ers TE Vernon Davis back at practice Wednesday

Vernon Davis returned to limited practice on Wednesday. Davis missed the 49ers' Week 3 matchup with an ankle injury. He'll try to return to the field in Week 4 for the 49ers' home showdown against the Eagles. Derek Carrier stepped in for Davis last Sunday and recorded just one catch for 23 yards. He'll likely get the go-ahead again if Davis has a setback this week.

Right now, it looks like Davis will be ready to play on Sunday, and that's good news for fantasy owners who are being squeezed hard at the TE position by injuries and bye weeks. If Davis is on the field and close to 100 percent, he should be slotted in as a top fantasy TE against the Eagles. Owners should keep a close eye on his practice schedule this week, however. It would be nice to see him get at least one full practice in before the game.
