The Knicks have seemingly been chasing Phil Jackson since the moment he retired from coaching after the 2011 season.
And they may have a chance to finally get him. But not to replace Mike Woodson. Instead, to join their front office, reports the New York Daily News.
According to an NBA source, Garden Chairman James Dolan has met with Jackson about a potential return to the franchise where he was a member of the Knicks' only two championship teams. Jackson also won 11 titles as a head coach with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers but apparently has no interest in coaching the Knicks.
Another recent report said Jackson was offered the head coaching position by current general manager Steve Mills, but he declined. The 68-year-old Jackson has been fairly consistent in saying he doesn't intend to return to coaching, but has been open to a front office position.
Earlier in the week in an interview, Jackson said he had been recently speaking with teams about possibly taking a front office spot for someone.
"There are a few (opportunities), but I shouldn't name them. It wouldn't be right to talk about it, name anything," Jackson said. "But yeah, there are some. There are winners and losers in the NBA, and a lot of people are trying to reclaim their position or change their culture or whatever. So yeah, there is. I've had conversations. Some of them are feelers.
And the Knicks certainly make the most sense. He has a history there having played for them, and they desperately need help restructuring the organization.
Jackson has served as an adviser to the Joe Dumars and the Pistons, specifically in their coaching search, in which they settled on Mo Cheeks. Jackson was not in favor of hiring Cheeks, though, who was fired after a 21-29 start.
Jackson was also set to join the Seattle Kings' front office staff, had the Kings relocated to Seattle last offseason. However, the Kings stayed put, and so did Jackson.
The Knicks are desperate to fix themselves, both on the floor and off it. They've been in a downward spiral this season, and with the uncertainty of Carmelo Anthony's future now in play, the team is looking for a better direction. Jackson would certainly be a name to add to the franchise, and maybe someone who would elicit a bit more trust from both fans and players.
