Report: Nets to sign Collins for second 10-day deal

With his first 10-day contract with the team set to end on Tuesday, it looks like the Brooklyn Nets will sign center Jason Collins to a second 10-day deal. Collins first signed with the team on February 23, the day after the NBA trade deadline when Glen Davis passed on the Nets to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers for the remainder of the season.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports is reporting the second 10-day contract will be signed on Wednesday.

As many are aware by now, the Collins signing with the Nets was big news because he's the first openly gay athlete as an active player in NBA history. In four games with the Nets this season, he's played just 34 minutes in spot situations to provide an inside presence. He's mostly been there for defense, rebounding, and fouling when he's on the court.

After Collins' second 10-day contract, the Nets will have the option to let him become an unrestricted free agent or sign him for the remainder of the season if he agrees to a deal. His second deal is set to end on March 14.

Wade has played in each of Miami’s last six contests, averaging 21.4 points on 62 percent shooting with 5.8 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. If the Heat get this Wade in the playoffs, they’ll likely be celebrating their third straight championship this June.

The Heat have remained strong without Wade this season (offensive rating: 110.1/defensive rating: 103.4/net rating: +6.8).

However, the lineup with Douglas and the other starters (111.6/114.4/-2.7) has struggled in 25 minutes. One, that’s a small sample. Two, I don’t think Erik Spoelstra cares. He’s starting Douglas over Ray Allen to preserve everyone else’s spot in the rotation – the spots they’ll hold when Wade returns.

The Heat are going full steam ahead planning to have Wade when it counts, and decisions like tonight’s are why they believe that will happen.
