Patriots’ Dennard released from jail 25 days early

Patriots cornerback Alfonzo Dennard is a free man. For the first time in more than a month.

On Friday, Dennard -- who had violated his probation last summer, more than a year after his conviction on charges of assaulting a police officer -- was released from the Lancaster County jail, according to the Lincoln Journal Star (via the Boston Herald). He was originally sentenced to 60 days in jail, but he only served 35 for good behavior.

Dennard was convicted of assaulting a police officer in April 2012, shortly before Dennard was to be drafted, and he was sentenced to 30 days in jail. But Dennard was arrested for DUI last summer, a violation of his probation, and the court gave him additional jail time for his trouble.

And he was left with a warning by Judge Stephanie Stacy at the time. Said Stacy: "I want you to know this is your last chance."

Now, Dennard can get back to work. The Patriots' offseason workouts begin April 21 with OTAs starting May 27.

Steelers sign WR Darrius Heyward-Bey to 1-year deal



The Steelers have added wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey on a one-year contract. The 2009 first-round bust caught just 29 passes in 16 games with the Colts last season. His game is very simple: Blazing speed and stone-covered hands. Heyward-Bey dropped six passes in 2013.



The Steelers are trying to catch magic in a bottle here, but since DHB can't catch much of anything, he shouldn't be more than veteran depth in a rebuilt receiving corps. Second-year wideout Markus Wheaton will be given every opportunity to be Pittsburgh's No. 2 WR.
