The 49ers used their first-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft on safety Jimmie Ward, and Thursday, the team signed the former Northern Illinois standout to a four-year deal.

And like rookie teammate Kenneth Acker, Ward inked his contract using a quill pen.

No word on whether $8 khakis were included in the "Welcome to the 49ers!" gift basket.

Ward was selected 30th overall, and was the fourth safety taken in the first round after Calvin Pryor (Jets, No. 18), Ha-Ha Clinton Dix (Packers, No. 21) and Deone Bucannon (Cardinals, No. 27).

“Jimmie Ward was definitely one of the players that if he was available for us at 30, that's a big if, and he was there, so we were excited,” Harbaugh said moments after the pick was made on May 8.

In his first-round draft grades, CBSSports.com's Pete Prisco wrote that Ward "is a heck of a football player, but with Antoine Bethea and Eric Reid was that really a need?"

Forty-Niners general manager Trent Baalke's response: "We feel the value was there."

Ward started 39 games in college and finished his career with 320 tackles, 26 passes defensed, 11 interceptions, four forced fumbles, two sacks, one fumble recovery and four blocked kicks.

Panthers GM compares rookie WR Kelvin Benjamin to Plaxico Burress

Plaxico Burress is now a painfully slow 36-year-old wideout nearing his NFL end. But he was once a matchup nightmare for defenses, a player who could go up and get any throw, thanks to his 6-foot-5 frame. He topped 1,000 yards four times and posted back-to-back seasons of double-digit touchdowns with the Giants. That's when he was professionally young, and Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman said Wednesday that his first-round pick, wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin, reminds him of a "young Plaxico."

I know this comparison will initially lead to jokes related to Plaxico accidentally shooting himself in the leg, but the similarities between the two players are pretty obvious. Neither are burners, but they can high-point the ball with the best of them due to their size. Burress caught just 22 passes and zero touchdowns in 10 games as a rookie in 2000; the Panthers are counting on a lot more from Benjamin right away as they don't have much to hang their hat on at wide receiver. Benjamin will be good for a handful of scores in 2014, and it wouldn't be surprising if he was Cam Newton's lead target out wide, but he's far from a perfectly polished prospect and will have plenty of ups and downs. He's a worthwhile WR4 in 12-team leagues.
