Meyers Leonard ejected for flagrantly fouling Kendall Marshall

Meyers Leonard was ejected from the Trail Blazers’ win over the Lakers night, drawing a flagrant 2 for pulling Kendall Marshall to the floor by the back of his neck.

The perils of being 7-foot-1 and fouling a guard. I think Leonard meant only to prevent Marshall from making a shot while being fouled, but because Marshall is so much shorter, Leonard hit him high.

I still think it’s the right call, though. Intent should not matter in cases like this. Despite his height, Leonard should take care not to make plays that come with such high risk of injuring opponents.

CONCACAF fined Mexican club Toluca $5,000 on Tuesday for taping a San Jose Earthquakes training session before their second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals.

The Earthquakes filed a complaint alleging that Toluca filmed San Jose's training on March 18 at Estadio Nemesio Díez, the day before the match.

The Earthquakes and Toluca drew 1-1, and the hosts advanced to the semifinals on penalties.

CONCACAF ruled that Toluca broke the "FIFA Disciplinary Code for unsporting behavior and Fair Play."

Toluca may not appeal the ruling.

Former Florida State standout Greg Reid has again run into legal issues, this time a week after he was signed by the Rams.

According to the Valdosta (Ga.) Police Department, via ESPN.com, Reid was arrested Saturday on March 29 for violating his probation stemming from a 2012 arrest for possession of marijuana and driving on a suspended license.

It wasn't long ago that the cornerback and return specialist appeared destined for NFL stardom. From 2009-2012, Reid was one of Florida State's most dynamic players, but he was dismissed from the team in 2012 after violating the school's three-strike drug policy. He later transferred to Valdosta State, but tore his ACL in the preseason and never played a down for the team. He underwent a second ACL injury in May 2013, and was signed by the Rams last month after a good showing at Florida State's pro day.

“He had a really nice pro day at Florida State,” Rams general manager Les Snead told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch at the time. “When our scouts reported that back, we brought him in on Friday last week. So he went from pro day to our place, had a nice workout. We liked his pedigree.”

The Rams under Jeff Fisher haven't shied away from players with off-field problems, and Reid is the latest.

“He was very productive in college before he had his issues,” Fisher said last week. “His issues are behind him. I personally ran the workout because the coaches were on vacation. I thought he moved well. He understood things. He's got a chance to compete at the nickel corner spot. Outstanding returner, not that we have a need. But had outstanding returns earlier in his career.”

And while it appears that Reid's issues aren't completely behind him, the Rams tell ESPN.com that his arrest won't have any effect on his status.

WR Britt to the Rams on one year deal

According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, the St. Louis Rams have added another wide receiver to the arsenal of quarterback Sam Bradford. Kenny Britt was signed Monday to a one year deal worth a reported $1.4 million, with $550,000 guaranteed. The 25 year-old, former first round draft pick has spent his first six seasons with the Tennessee Titans. He played in 12 games in 2013, catching only 11 balls for 96 yards.

Britt has never really lived up to expectations that come with being a first round draft pick. His career high in receptions is 45 and he's never eclipsed 800 yards in a season. His best season was 2010, when he caught 42 balls for 775 yards and nine touchdowns in 12 games. That was during his second season and had many experts believing his third year was going to be a breakout year. The 2011 season started off proving the experts right. Britt had 14 catches for 269 yards and three touchdowns after two games and had Music City begging for Britt. In Week 3, Britt tore his ACL and MCL, and has never been the same. That's the pessimist's view. The optimist's view is this: Britt is still only 25 years old and he's headed to St. Louis, where his head coach will be Jeff Fisher, who was also his head coach during his best season in 2010. He'll have one of the most promising, dynamic young wide receivers in the league on the other side in Tavon Austin. Britt is a 6'3", 225 lb wide receiver. That is something that any quarterback could grow to enjoy having, especially in the red zone. Speaking of quarterbacks, Sam Bradford is a pretty good one. He was enjoying the best year of his career in 2013 until tearing his ACL in week 7. He was on pace for 3,800 yards, 32 touchdowns and less than 10 interceptions. So, with all that in mind, it's possible that Britt could see a resurrection in his career in St. Louis.I expect that. I see Britt as a WR2 with upside. Talent doesn't just disappear. If the commitment is there, a 25 year-old wide receiver should be able to reach any success that he's had in the past. I like what the Rams offense is building, and expect Bradford to have a huge year in 2014. WIth Britt and Austin at WR, and Zac Stacy at RB, expect the Rams to have several viable fantasy options this coming season.

The news we all expected from the moment he committed to Kansas was made official on Monday: Jayhawks star freshman Andrew Wiggins will leave college basketball after one season.

Wiggins and Kansas coach Bill Self held a press conference at Phog Allen Fieldhouse.

"It wasn't an easy decision," Wiggins said. "I wish I had more time, time goes so fast. I wish I had all four years."

Wiggins averaged 17.1 points and 5.9 rebounds for KU this season. He's been projected as the No. 1 overall pick, and, barring a surprise, is a top-three choice at worst.

Kansas' season ended last weekend, when the second-seeded Jayhawks were upset by No. 10 Stanford in the Round of 32.

"He was so coachable, a great teammate," Self said. "As good as he was for us, he's only scratching the surface of what he can do. ... He's a humble, unselfish, team-first guy. He's been an unbelievable ambassador to our program."

Wiggins' game was at times brilliant to watch but often criticized. Few, if any, players have come into college with more expectations. On Monday, Wiggins was named to the Associated Press' All-American Second Team.

"I'm confident I'm ready," Wiggins said. "No one game's perfect. I have a lot work on."

The NBA Draft will be held on June 26.

Pistons’ Brandon Jennings fined $5,000 for second flopping violation this season

That is a clear flop — and one that got the call, which is why guys do this.

It was a close game, there were three minutes left and the Pistons were up four, when Brandon Jennings had missed a floater and the Bucks’ Jeff Adrien grabbed the board and came down, Jennings was close to him, got brushed, and then fell to the ground.

The referees called a foul on Adrien. By the way, the Pistons went on to win the game (not because of this call, but again, this is why guys flop).

Jennings had been warned for flopping by the league back in December (against the Rockets) so for this one the league hit Jennings with a $5,000 fine.

Four players had already received a flopping fine this season: James Harden, Corey Brewer, Lance Stephenson and Mario Chalmers. Another 22 players have gotten a warning from the league but there is no fine with the first offense.

Last summer David Stern could not get the league’s competition committee to stiffen the flopping fines, so they remain ineffectual. It will be interesting to see if newly minted commissioner Adam Silver has better luck. You know flopping is going to come up as an issue in the playoffs that Silver

ASTANA, Kazakhstan -- UEFA president Michel Platini has pushed back his deadline to decide if he will run for FIFA president next year.

Valery Hache/AFP/Getty ImagesMichel Platini is still mulling his FIFA plans.

Platini told UEFA's 54 member federations on Thursday he will discuss the 2015 FIFA and UEFA elections at a round of regional meetings with their leaders. The sessions are scheduled across Europe between September and December.

"I will be there to listen to you, as usual, and we can then take decisions together," Platini said in French to a UEFA Congress audience that included FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

"As these concern you first and foremost," Platini told European football leaders in his keynote speech, "we will discuss them all together at (executive program) meetings after the summer."

Last September, Platini told a European football meeting in Dubrovnik, Croatia, that he would decide his FIFA intentions "during or after the World Cup in Brazil."

Blatter is expected to seek a fifth four-year term at the May 2015 election in Zurich.

Blatter said last month he will run "if the member associations asked me."

That could happen on June 11 at FIFA's congress in Sao Paulo on the eve of the opening World Cup match.

Platini, a FIFA vice president, has led UEFA since 2007 and has long been seen as the natural successor to the 78-year-old Blatter, who was his mentor in football politics.

Still, Blatter has shown little sign of fulfilling a promise made at the 2011 UEFA Congress in Paris that his current term in office would be his last.

Blatter said of Platini in his speech to UEFA members on Thursday that "sometimes we have not (had) the same ideas ... but we keep that friendship."

The next UEFA presidential election will be held in March 2015 in Vienna, Austria.

In their speeches, Platini and Blatter referred to each other as "dear friends," yet also chided each other from the stage.

When Platini recalled advice from Blatter in Paris three years ago that UEFA should show more solidarity with world football, he seemed to remind the FIFA chief of his election pledge.

"As you know, when you look us Europeans in the eye and tell us something, you can be sure that we will be listening carefully," Platini said.

Earlier, Blatter pointed out that FIFA anti-corruption reforms to create independent ethics and audit committees had not been adopted elsewhere.

"Decisions taken by the FIFA Congress have to be implemented in the national associations. This concerns also the confederations," Blatter said.

Platini made one direct challenge to Blatter on the subject of investors owning players' economic rights. UEFA wants the practice banned as a threat to transfer market integrity and a drain of cash from the sport.

FIFA has so far declined decisive action against third-party ownership, which is widely used in South America, Spain and Portugal.

"Please have the political courage to deal with this problem once and for all," Platini said, making a "solemn request" to Blatter.

"The amount of money that vanishes into thin air in a single transfer exceeds the entire annual budget for your global solidarity program," Platini said, referring to FIFA's annual $30 million spending on development projects. "Do you consider that normal? I, for one, do not." Stressing UEFA's co-operation with the other five continental football bodies, as Blatter suggested in 2011, Platini set out increased commitment to social issues.

Europe's top football official said a new children's foundation would use UEFA's wealth to help finance programs for young people around the world.

Platini said UEFA will help women and people from ethnic minorities train for management roles in football bodies.

A planned conference in Rome in September will "develop the educational arm of our anti-racism strategy," Platini said.

´Pity´ for Ibrahimovic to skip Premier League, claims Mourinho

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho feels it would be a “pity” if Paris Saint-Germain’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic retired before playing in England.

Ibrahimovic, who played under Mourinho while at Inter, stated ahead of PSG’s UEFA Champions League clash with Chelsea that it would be “impossible” to move to England.

“If you ask the people behind this project, I don’t think they’d let me go,” the 32-year-old Sweden international explained on Tuesday.

However, Mourinho stated it would be a shame for Ibrahimovic not to wrap up his career with a stint in England, having previously plied his trade in Sweden, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy and France.

“It is a pity for Ibrahimovic if he finishes his career and hasn’t played in the best league the world,” he said.

“But his career is so full of success that he’s one of the greatest players even if he didn’t play in the Premier League.

“Ibrahimovic has a big self-esteem and to be his coach was fantastic, but now he wants to win tomorrow and I want to win.”

Returning to Wednesday’s quarter-final first-leg clash at the Parc des Princes, Mourinho stated there are plenty similarities between PSG and Chelsea both on and off the pitch.

“In the last two years PSG’s investment was fantastic and their choice of players was fantastic,” he added.

“PSG’s coach (Laurent Blanc) is good and the passion in the city is also good, and the Parc de Princes is always a beautiful place to play.

“I’ve watched many PSG matches and they’ve a clear philosophy even when they change all three midfield players. We’re the same.

“Maybe PSG as a club doesn’t have the experience of Chelsea, but compare player by player and that is not the case.”

The Oakland Raiders secondary is going to have a 49ers flavor to it in 2014. The Raiders signed cornerback Carlos Rogers to a one-year deal on Monday, the team announced. Rogers becomes the second 49ers cornerback to join the Raiders since free agency began on March 11.

As the Raiders have done all offseason, the team tweeted out a picture of their newest player signing a contract, so we can all be sure they actually signed.

Besides Rogers, Oakland also signed former San Francisco corner Tarell Brown. Brown started in 42 games over the past three seasons with the 49ers, including all 16 games in both 2011 and 2012.

Brown and Rogers were both mainstays in the 49ers secondary over the past three years. After signing with the 49ers in 2011, Rogers started in all 48 regular season games he played in and made it to one Pro Bowl (2011).

Rogers is hoping that his recent success with Brown in San Francisco's secondary will translate to success with the Raiders. "It's going to be fun. We bring leadership and experience," Rogers said, via the San Francisco Chronicle. "We helped turn the 49ers defense around and maybe that translates over here to the Raiders."

The 32-year-old cornerback was released by San Francisco in early March in a cost-cutting move that created $5.1 million in cap room for the 49ers. Before signing with San Francisco in 2011, Rogers spent six seasons with the Redskins.

RB Martin expects clearance next week for Bucs

NFL.com's Michael Wesseling has reported that Tampa Bay running back Doug Martin is expecting to gain medical clearance next week, and should be ready to resume football-related activities when the team starts mini-camp on April 22nd. "It's been too long since I've been in the game," Martin said, via Rick Brown of the Lakeland Ledger. "I can't wait to get back on the field."Expectations were high for Martin in 2013, after rushing for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns during his rookie season in 2012. He was injured six games into the year and placed on Injured Reserve with a torn labrum in his left shoulder in Week 8.

Good news... he's looking like he'll be healthy for the start of the 2014 campaign, and new head coach Lovie Smith has already said that he's going to be their main running back. Bad news... the new offensive staff has also said that they will utilize a more balanced running attack than what the previous regime did under Greg Schiano. So, even if he is their "main running back", the odds of him getting over 300 carries and tallying over 1,400 yards as he did in his rookie season are slim-to-none.Fantasy take... A torn labrum is a rare injury for a running back, so you have to assume it was a freak thing. If Martin is healthy, even if he shares carries, is still a solid RB1. The 49 catches for 472 yards in his rookie year makes him a top 10 fantasy RB in PPR leagues. There's a reason he was drafted in the top 5 picks of most 2013 fantasy drafts. He's a stud.

Central Coast Mariners boosted their Asian Champions League qualification hopes with victory over Western Sydney Wanderers. GettyImagesCentral Coast Mariners boosted their Asian Champions League qualification hopes with victory over Western Sydney Wanderers.

The race for second place in the A-League swung the way of Central Coast Mariners on Saturday as they saw off Western Sydney Wanderers 2-1.

With Brisbane Roar safe in first spot ahead of the playoffs, it remains to be seen who will take second and qualify for the Asian Champions League.

The Mariners took a big step towards it being them, though, leapfrogging the Wanderers in front of just over 13,000 fans.

Full-back Joshua Rose put them one up in the 32nd minute after a strong run from his own half, before Nikolai Topor-Stanley turned in a 40th-minute equaliser after Tomi Juric's shot fell to him.

It appeared as though the game would end as a draw after that but, with seconds left, Bernie Ibini-Isei curled in a winner that prompted a firework display from the home club who knew the significance of the goal.

They head to bottom side Perth Glory next weekend.

Saturday's other game saw Melbourne Victory draw 1-1 with Sydney FC.

Joel Chianese put Sydney ahead three minutes after the break but James Troisi equalised midway through the second half.

UEFA Europa League Preview: Basel v Valencia

Basel will be without the backing of their own fans for Thursday’s first leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final against Valencia.

The Swiss champions were punished by UEFA last week after the behaviour of their fans caused the second leg of a 2-1 aggregate victory over Salzburg in the last round to be suspended for 13 minutes.

As a result, the Valencia game will be played behind closed doors.

The ruling will no doubt have come as a significant blow to Basel, who are looking to better their 2012-13 performance in this competition when they lost out to eventual champions Chelsea in the semi-finals.

Basel’s run of three European matches without conceding on home soil could prove daunting for Juan Antonio Pizzi’s visitors, but the Spanish outfit have won all five of their Europa League away matches this season, so there is a real sense that something has got to give.

Valencia have also kept clean sheets in their last four matches at home and away in the competition – one more would give them a tournament record.

The clubs have not met in continental competition since the 2002-03 UEFA Champions League group stages, when Valencia claimed a 6-2 victory at home, before battling to a 2-2 draw on the road.

Current Basel coach Murat Yakin played in both of those fixtures, but will have to contend with the threat of Pablo Alcacer this time round – the joint-top goalscorer still involved in the competition.

In addition to a lack of personnel in the stands, Basel also face something of a crisis on the pitch, with defenders Arlind Ajeti, Kay Voser and Behrang Safari (all thigh) doubtful, while Ivan Ivanov (knee), Marco Streller (Groin) and Endogan Adili (knee) are all set to miss out.

Marek Suchy and Giovanni Sio are both suspended.

Valencia have similar concerns at the back, with Diego Alves (hamstring), Victor Ruiz (thigh), Ricardo Costa (ankle) and Philippe Senderos (hamstring) all carrying injuries, and midfielder Javier Fuego serving a suspension.
