Costa Rica confirm 23-man squad

Costa Rica coach Jorge Luis Pinto confirmed his 23-man FIFA World Cup squad on Saturday, led by Bryan Ruiz.

Ruiz, on loan at PSV Eindhoven from Fulham, captains a team set to face Uruguay, Italy and England in Group D.

Arsenal-owned Olympiacos striker Joel Campbell is among those to have made the squad.

Pino initially named a 26-man squad with four on standby, and the three making way included Real Salt Lake forward Alvaro Saborio.

Saborio was ruled out with a foot injury in a devastating blow for a Costa Rica side likely to struggle in a tough group.

Midfielder Carlos Hernandez and Deportivo Saprissa defender Kendall Watson were the other players to make way.

Everton’s Bryan Oviedo is missing having been ruled out in early May as he continues his recovery from a broken leg.

Squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Daniel Cambronero (Herediano), Keylor Navas (Levante), Patrick Pemberton (Alajuelense)

Defenders: Johnny Acosta (Alajuelense), Junior Diaz (Mainz), Oscar Duarte (Club Brugge), Waylon Francis (Columbus Crew), Christian Gamboa (Rosenborg), Giancarlo Gonzalez (Columbus Crew), Roy Miller (New York Red Bulls), Heiner Mora (Deportivo Saprissa), Michael Umana (Deportivo Saprissa)

Midfielders: Michael Barrantes (Aalesund), Christian Bolanos (Copenhagen), Diego Calvo (Valerenga), Jose Miguel Cubero (Herediano), Esteban Granados (Herediano), Yeltsin Tejeda (Deportivo Saprissa)

Forwards: Celso Borges (AIK), Randall Brenes (Cartagines), Joel Campbell (Arsenal), Bryan Ruiz (Fulham), Marco Urena (Kuban Krasnodar)

More NFL offseason: League minicamp dates | Latest news, notes

With Browns receiver Josh Gordon on the precipice of a league-mandated suspension that could cost him the entire 2014 season after failing another drug test, the Cleveland standout who led the league in receiving yards last year despite a two-game suspension can't seem to stay out of trouble.

Gordon was issued a speeding ticket on Memorial Day, according to WKCY, after police say he was caught driving 74 mph in a 60 mph zone. During the stop, a passenger in Gordon's Mercedes was issued a citation for possession of marijuana.

Police say the marijuana was found in a blue bag, and the passenger admitted that it belonged to that person.

"We are gathering information regarding the situation," the team said in a statement released to multiple media outlets. "We will not have any further comment until the appropriate time."

It was reported earlier this week that Gordon is in Stage 3 of the league's drug program. That means a violation of the NFL's policy would keep him from playing for at least a year. Gordon has appealed the suspension for now.

"We have to build this team so that no one player drives the ship," coach Mike Pettine said earlier this month. "That we can be insulated losing players for extended periods of time potentially is part of the game. Successful franchises are the ones that have enough depth built and enough options to account for it."

Gordon is due to be in court June 4 to answer the speeding citation.

Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski still on schedule with his knee rehab

We last posted a note on Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski about six weeks ago. At that time, it was reported that Gronkowski was "right where he should be" in his rehab from a torn ACL and MCL, which he suffered in December.Six weeks later, today, the tune is the same. Gronkowski spoke to the media Wednesday and said he has been setback-free during the process. He isn't taking part in Patriots OTAs but still working out on his own to stay in shape.

I still think Gronk won't make it back for Week 1, and I will approach him in drafts this year similarly to how I did in 2013 -- I'm not going to take him. I shouldn't be so absolute, but he would have to fall mighty far for me to spend a pick on him. Gronk missing just one or two games at the start of the season seems like a best-case scenario. I don't think we'll see him play much in September, if at all. He showed last year that he can knock the rust off quickly as he caught eight passes for 114 yards when he debuted in Week 7. And when he was on the field, he played like the Gronk who deserves to be a second or third-round fantasy choice. But how long will he stay on the field? I'm not going to commit a significant amount of draft dollars or an early round pick in a player whom I don't have faith in to play more than half a season. The Patriots' tight end options behind Gronkowski are Michael Hoomanawanui and D.J. Williams. In other words, not much.

Frank Vogel will reportedly return as coach of the Pacers. (USATSI) Frank Vogel will reportedly return as coach of the Pacers. (USATSI)

Yahoo Sports reports that the Indiana Pacers will retain coach Frank Vogel following the Pacers' disappointing six-game loss to the Miami Heat.

After consecutive losses in the Eastern Conference finals, Frank Vogel will return to coach the Indiana Pacers next season, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Indiana management has never considered replacing him, sources told Yahoo Sports.

Vogel's job status had become fodder for debate because of an unsteady late-season slide that extended into the playoffs, but Pacers president Larry Bird and general manager Kevin Pritchard have remained strong believers in him, sources said.

Most of the stories surrounding Vogel's possible removal as coach, league sources told Yahoo Sports, had been coming from unemployed coaches trying to angle themselves into contention to replace him.

via Sources: Frank Vogel to return as Pacers coach - Yahoo Sports.

It's the right decision. Vogel turned a team of raw and young players into a legitimate contender with a strong identity. As disappointing as the final four months of the Pacers' season was, the team itself has done well under Vogel, and you have to think past this team and these circumstances. Vogel has developed players, preached discipline, grown a culture, managed egos, and won a ton of games.

Firing someone after consecutive trips to the Eastern Conference Finals because they couldn't get past the Miami Heat is kind of crazy.

Mark Jackson was rumored to be in line for the job if the Pacers had fired Vogel, according to a report.

The Pacers will move forward with Vogel, and stability combined with overall success is always a good combination.

Kawhi Leonard with the monster dunk on Serge Ibaka early in Game 6 (VIDEO)

One way to neutralize an opponent’s so-called rim protector is to simply go right at him.

That’s what Kawhi Leonard did early in Game 6 between the Spurs and the Thunder, spinning past Kevin Durant on the perimeter before going up for a monster throw-down as if Serge Ibaka wasn’t even there.

The Patriots might be able to recoup money from their former tight end. (Twitter/@WesleyLowery) Aaron Hernandez needs plenty of lawyers, but will he be able to afford them? (Twitter/@WesleyLowery)

Things are not looking up for Aaron Hernandez. The former Patriots tight end's been held in prison for a lengthy amount of time now and recently pled not guilty to double murder charges.

Now he's apparently dealing with a lack of funds to pay his attorneys. Fox Sports reported Friday that Hernandez' lawyers, Charles Rankin and James Sultan, filed documents indicating they might discontinue their representation of Hernandez.

The lawyers indicated their involvement with the latest Hernandez case was “limited to arraignment only and related proceedings.”

Perhaps the biggest obstacle for Hernandez? What the newest charges represent for him in terms of holding onto money received from the Patriots.

The Pats could seek to obtain additional cap space as well as money from Hernandez; whether or not they're able to get it is another story, but Hernandez is clearly dealing with mounting legal bills.

“The defendant is in the process of seeking to make financial arrangements to retain counsel," the lawyers added.

Back in September, Hernandez pled not guilty to the shooting of Odin Lloyd. He pled not guilty last week to two charges of first-degree stemming from a 2012 shooting.

Giants RB David Wilson taking part in OTAs

We still don't have confirmation that Giants running back David Wilson will be able to play this season, and that may not come for a couple of months. But he is taking part in OTAs this week. The source link below contains a video of Wilson taking a handoff from quarterback Josh Freeman, so he's obviously not working with the first-team offense; that job belongs to running back Rashad Jennings.Wilson is working his way back after undergoing spinal fusion surgery to correct a herniated disc in January.

Everyone is hoping that Wilson will be cleared for contact before training camp, and so we wait. If he gains clearance, he will make up half of an intriguing two-man backfield with Jennings. I know probably all of you are jaded with Wilson, but I still believe in his physical talent. I'll probably be suckered into using a mid-round pick on him, and unlike with other oft-injured players, that's a bed I'm prepared to lie in.

Bill O'Brien has the Patriots mimicking the Texans. Bill O'Brien has the Texans watching a lot of Patriots tape. (USATSI)

More NFL offseason: League minicamp dates | Latest news, notes

Bill O'Brien comes to the Texans from the Patriots (by way of Penn State) so it's no surprise he's going to do things in a similar fashion.

Also: the Patriots are really good, so if, as T.J. Yates claims, the Texans are "trying to mimic" them, it's probably not a bad thing.

“Obviously watch a lot of Patriots film and seeing how they do it,” Yates said. “We're trying to mimic them right now.”

O'Brien also noted, via CSN Houston, the Texans are "changing tempo" a lot under the new regime. This is a pretty stark contrast from the methodical -- and borderline predictable -- approach under Gary Kubiak.

Again, no surprise. O'Brien pointed out the "view of tempo has evolved" in football over the years.

"Our view of tempo has evolved especially those of us who were in New England," O'Brien said. "We were a huddle team in New England and we were always a huddle team in New England. But then the last few years I was there we incorporated more no huddle and different tempos of no huddle."

Fast-paced offenses aren't viewed as gimmicky, but rather an intelligent strategy for keeping defenses on their heels. With no dominant quarterback on the roster -- only Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum, T.J. Yates and Tom Savage are on the depth chart -- the Texans will have plenty of work to do in order to keep defenses honest.

Does Andy Dalton really want Jay Cutler money? (USATSI) Does Andy Dalton really want Jay Cutler money? (USATSI)

More NFL offseason: League minicamp dates | Latest news, notes

Seems like every time I'm called to do interviews on Cincinnati radio, the major talking point is Andy Dalton and what kind of contract he can expect to receive.

Clearly, Dalton -- who's taken the Bengals to the playoffs for three straight seasons, an unprecedented feat in franchise history, but who also hasn't delivered a win in those postseasons -- would like to make as much money as possible. Probably somewhere, let's say, in the $20 million per year range (even though that probably sounds ridiculous).

And clearly, the Bengals want to pay millions less. Probably somewhere, I imagine, in the $14 million per year range.

All of this might explain why neither side seems to be making much progress on a new deal as Dalton enters the final year of his contract. But in an interview with Sports Illustrated, did coach Marvin Lewis imply that Andy Dalton wanted a similar deal to the one earned by Jay Cutler when the Bears signed him to a seven-year, $126.7 million deal last January that averages $18.1 million per season?

"I'm hopeful, you know?" Lewis told reporter Don Banks. "I know he would like to get it done and I know we'd like to get it done, and just hopefully we can get by that deal with my man, Cutler in Chicago and we can all get something everybody likes.''

To be fair, there's not a time that I can recall when Lewis didn't throw all of his support behind Dalton, and even though the team signed veteran Jason Campbell in the offseason before drafting A.J. McCarron in the fifth round, Lewis still says he has all the confidence in Dalton.

"From the time he's stepped back into Cincinnati this offseason, he's had these guys rally back around him," Lewis said. "... Everybody wants to blame our quarterback for everything, but in that game against San Diego [in the 2013 postseason] it was both offense and defense. We didn't stop them on third down and get off the field, our great little running back [Giovani Bernard] fumbled the football [at the 5-yard line], and we didn't make any plays on special teams or turn the ball over on defense. It's easy to point at one guy, but baloney, the football team didn't play as well as we needed to win.''

But what is it about the Cutler contract? Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith also reportedly wants that much money from the Chiefs, even though his wife tweeted out that the report wasn't true.

At $18 million, you'd have to think that was too much money for Bengals owner Mike Brown.

"We are going to try to get something done, but I don't know if we are going to be able to or not," Brown said in March. "At some point we are going to have to do something more than just let everyone else leave waiting to get something done with that situation. We held back this year trying to put ourselves in a position to get him done. If it turns out it can't be made to work we will do something elsewhere. I don't think we plan to go another year the way we did this year."

"The player market is something that always is surprising," Brown continued. "Why the prices are so high is hard to know for sure. You look backwards and there have been more bad deals then good deals from a club's perspective. That doesn't mean there haven't been some good deals -- there have. More often than not you don't win overpaying a guy."

And suffice to say, Brown likely would include the Cutler deal in the category of: bad deal. Or, at the very least, a deal that's been annoying him in these latest negotiations.

More Offseason Analysis: Coaching changes, news | Free Agency | Draft

New Orleans Pelicans shooting guard Anthony Morrow will opt out of his contract for next season and become a free agent in July, according to Jorge Sierra of HoopsHype.

Morrow was set to make $1.15 million in 2014-2015 after signing a minimum-salary deal last summer. He will surely be looking for a raise and a multi-year contract.

Making 45.1 percent of his three-pointers last season, Morrow finished fourth in the NBA in three-point accuracy behind Kyle Korver, Pablo Prigioni and Mike Miller. He has perhaps the prettiest shot in the league, and he scored 20-plus points five times in the final few weeks of the season. Several teams will be looking for floor spacers this summer, so he should have numerous suitors.

Rasheed Wallace out as player development coach as Pistons add four new members to basketball staff

The Pistons announced on Friday the names of three people who will round out Stan Van Gundy’s assistant coaching staff, along with one other person being added who will be employed as a team scout.

But the press release buried the lede.

The names of the new hires won’t be familiar or even recognizable to the most die-hard of Pistons or basketball fans. The name of one departing coach in particular, however, is likely to generate plenty of fan reaction.

From the official release:

Detroit Pistons Head Coach and President of Basketball Operations Stan Van Gundy announced today that the team has named Brendan Malone, Bob Beyer and Charles Klask as assistant coaches and Adam Glessner as a team scout. Per team policy, terms of the contracts were not disclosed. …

The team also announced that assistant coach Henry Bibby, player development coaches Rasheed Wallace and Bernard Smith, advance scout Kamran Sufi and video coordinator Raman Sposato will not be retained.

That’s right: no more Coach Sheed.

It’s fairly common for a new head coach to bring in an entirely new staff that aligns more closely with his vision, while cleaning house in order to instill the feeling of a fresh start. Wallace was primarily working with big men Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond, and was apparently helping them learn more than the best way to score from the low block.

Van Gundy was given the role of president because he’s believed to be competent enough to completely turn the franchise around. But Pistons fans will miss having one of their more beloved former players around, and his enthusiasm on the sidelines will be hard to replace.

More NFL offseason: League minicamp dates | Latest news, notes

The world of college football recruiting is ... interesting. It's always funny when pro players get involved because they're clearly fans of certain schools and not fans of other schools.

Like, for instance, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton who's a big Auburn fan and, naturally, not a big Alabama fan. And Newton apparently took the chance to "diss" Alabama to Crimson Tide commit Mekhi Brown at a 7-on-7 tournament hosted by Newton's foundation.

Newton, like any good alum of a rival school, pointed out that Alabama "ain't where" Brown needs to be.

"(Newton) was just like, Alabama ain't where I need to be," Brown said via 247Sports.com. "He was talking to one of my teammates who had on an Alabama visor. He was talking about how he needed to get an Auburn visor and stuff like that. It was crazy."

Brown pointed out to Newton that he was already committed to Alabama.

"He was like, 'you don't need to worry about that," Brown said. "Come with Auburn."

We eagerly await Nick Saban's reaction.

Cardinals HC Bruce Arians expects RB Andre Ellington to get 25-30 touches per game

Can Cardinals running back Andre Ellington handle 400 touches in one season? Simply, no. Hardly any running back can, but that's not going to stop head coach Bruce Arians from talking about his young, dynamic runner as if he's the next Eric Dickerson.Via Mike Jurecki of 910 AM radio in Phoenix, Arians said Tuesday that Ellington is his No. 1 running back and "expects" him to handle 25-30 touches per game this season.

Don't pay much attention to Arians' numbers; it's just not going to happen. But it is yet an endorsement of Ellington and a sign that the Cardinals definitely plan on giving him more work after he touched the ball just 157 times in 2013. If Arians gives Ellington just 16-20 touches per week, that will be enough chances for him to post strong RB2 numbers in fantasy.

“Since Wednesday Kolo has been having treatment and this treatment will end on Friday. We have therefore told him to rest,” Dah said.

“He will not participate in the match against Bosnia-Herzegovina, but will return early next week.”

Kolo’s brother and Manchester City star Yaya is still sidelined with an unspecified muscle injury, while Hannover’s Didier Ya Konan is also injured.

More postseason coverage: Playoff schedule, results | Latest news, notes

The NBA and the Sterling family reached an agreement Friday that cleared the way for the Los Angeles Clippers to be sold to Steve Ballmer, the league announced.

The league will drop its pending charge to terminate the team's ownership and the Sterlings have agreed not to sue the NBA. The vote scheduled for Tuesday in New York, which could have terminated the team's ownership by a three-fourths vote and turned the asset over to the league for sale, has been canceled, the NBA said.

In addition, "Mrs. Sterling and the Trust also agreed not to sue the NBA and to indemnify the NBA against lawsuits from others, including from Donald Sterling," the NBA said.

Shelly Sterling's agreement to sell the team to Ballmer, the former Microsoft CEO, for $2 billion, is now subject to approval by the NBA's Board of Governors. The transaction requires a three-fourths vote to pass.

The legal settlement between the NBA, Shelly Sterling and the family's trust marks a presumed end to one of the ugliest periods in NBA history. Donald Sterling, owner of the Clippers since 1983, was banned for life by commissioner Adam Silver on April 29 after an audio recording of his racially derogatory statements became public.

In addition to banning Silver for life, Silver urged the NBA Board of Governors to initiate a charge to terminate the team's ownership -- which it did. Donald Sterling's attorneys responded May 27 with a 32-page rebuttal and said the 80-year-old owner planned to "fight to the bloody end."

Meanwhile, Sterling's wife, Shelly, negotiated a sale of the team to Ballmer -- who has chased NBA ownership for years -- for a price that is more than four times the record for an NBA franchise. In the past 24 hours, Donald Sterling has reportedly been found by experts related to the family trust to be mentally incapacited -- assertions his lawyers have called "absurd." On Friday afternoon, Donald Sterling's attorney, Max Blecher, told multiple news outlets that he planned to sue the NBA for $1 billion.

The sale of the Clippers was becoming the messiest $2 billion transaction in sports history. Friday's settlement put at least a ceremonial end to a saga that has damaged the NBA's reputation, caused sponsors to flee and overshadowed one of the league's best playoffs in years.

The NBA's complete statement:

The NBA, Shelly Sterling and the Sterling Family Trust today resolved their dispute over the ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers. Under the agreement, the Clippers will be sold to Steve Ballmer, pending approval by the NBA Board of Governors, and the NBA will withdraw its pending charge to terminate the Sterlings' ownership of the team.

Because of the binding agreement to sell the team, the NBA termination hearing that had been scheduled for June 3 in New York City has now been cancelled. Mrs. Sterling and the Trust also agreed not to sue the NBA and to indemnify the NBA against lawsuits from others, including from Donald Sterling.

Reports: Tyronn Lue, Lionel Hollins Alvin Gentry all interview with Cavaliers

The Cleveland Cavaliers coaching search — read: their effort to find someone who can get Kyrie Irving and their future No. 1 pick to be the cornerstones of a contender — keeps moving right along.

The team interviewed three candidates this week according to multiple reports — Tyronn Lue, Lionel Hollins and Alvin Gentry.

That is in addition to Chicago Bulls assistant Adrian Griffin who interviewed with the team earlier this week.

Jason Lloyd of the Beacon Journal breaks down Lue and Hollins.

Lue is a former journeyman who played on seven teams during 11 seasons in the NBA. Immediately after retiring, he joined Doc Rivers’ staff with the Boston Celtics, then Rivers took him to Los Angeles before this season.

Hollins, 60, is also a former All-Star and champion as a player who coached the Memphis Grizzlies to 56 wins and guided them to the conference finals last year before his contract was not renewed.

Alvin Gentry works with Lue on Rivers’ staff in Los Angeles — he was the guy primarily in charge of the Clippers’ league-best offense. Previously he was the head coach of the Suns and Clippers.

Cavaliers GM David Griffin is in charge of the process, which is expected to continue for a couple more weeks.

More NFL offseason: League minicamp dates | Latest news, notes

The NFL suspended Cardinals linebacker Daryl Washington a year for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

The league announced the suspension Friday and it begins immediately. Cardinals GM Steve Keim, not sounding very happy in a statement, called the violation "completely unacceptable."

"It's completely unacceptable that Daryl has once again put us in this position," Keim said. "We all know what the consequences are and will deal with them. From a personal standpoint, our hope is that this suspension will give Daryl the opportunity to accept the necessary help and guidance to get his life back on track and we will certainly support him however we can.

“As it pertains to our team, our approach is the same as it's always been: next man up. We talk a lot about how critical depth is to a team because situations always arise where you lose players, whether by injury or other circumstances such as this one. One player's absence is another's opportunity. That approach has served us well in the past and we will rely on it now."

Washington's loss is a major blow for the Cards, who also lost Karlos Dansby this offseason in free agency. Second-year linebacker Kevin Minter was expected to fill Dansby's role and now there's a big, old mess in the middle for Arizona.

Last May Washington was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault. The suspension isn't related to that arrest but the combination certainly doesn't help.

And Washington was suspended four games to start the 2013 season.

That was coming off a season where he recorded over 100 tackles and nine sacks; Washington still managed three sacks and 75 tackles in 2013 despite missing time.

It's a huge blow to the Cardinals in what looked like a very promising season.

Washington issued a statement on Friday afternoon. It doesn't sound like he'll appeal the suspension.

"I recently learned that I had violations of the NFL Substances of Abuse policy related to marijuana. The Policy is very strict, and I have chosen to take responsibility," Washington said in the statement. "I am committed to making changes in my life that will allow me to return to the NFL as soon as possible. I will work extremely hard to stay in top football shape, and will work equally as hard to ensure that my life off the field meets the high level of maturity and responsibility to which I am committed. I sincerely apologize for the effect of my actions on my teammates, coaches and other colleagues at the Cardinals.

"I also apologize to Cardinals fans for the time I will miss. I will work diligently during this suspension will return as a better man and football player."

Dolphins WR Mike Wallace: 'I didn't feel like I knew what was going on' last season

Mike Wallace's first year with a five-year, $60 million contract with the Dolphins was a disappointment. You can't really put any shine on it. He posted career lows in yards per catch and touchdowns. He finished nine games with fewer than 50 yards. Blame it on Wallace putting too much pressure on himself to succeed for his new team, being used incorrectly by former offensive coordinator Mike Sherman, defenses forcing the Dolphins to beat them with other receivers, and/or Wallace and quarterback Ryan Tannehill's inability to connect on countless deep routes. It was a troubling year for Wallace, and one that he admits "I didn't feel like I knew what was going on."That's what Wallace said Tuesday via the Palm Beach Post. The Dolphins are installing a new system under new offensive coordinator Bill Lazor, but Wallace said he already feels "a lot more comfortable." Wallace also said he and Tannehill have been working together as often as possible to prepare for this season."We didn't miss one day," Wallace said.

The chemistry between those two definitely needs work. This all sounds nice, but fantasy owners will largely take a "I'll believe it when I see it" stance with Wallace. That's prudent after he was a bust last year. Lazor, a Chip Kelly disciple who was the Eagles' quarterbacks coach last year, is already increasing the tempo in OTAs and wants the Dolphins to run plays faster this season. Lazor will emphasize the ground game more than Sherman did, but a faster tempo means more plays, which will give Tannehill and Wallace more opportunities to gain large chunks of yardage. Wallace should be drafted as a WR3. Tannehill is a decent QB2.

New Broncos safety T.J. Ward says he's learned his lesson. (USATSI) New Broncos safety T.J. Ward says incident was 'blown out of proportion.' (USATSI)

T.J. Ward was signed to a $23 million deal by Broncos this offseason to bring "energy and toughness" to the secondary. But last week, months before the safety will take the field for the first time with his new team, police issued an arrest warrant for Ward on misdemeanor charges of assault and disturbing the peace after he allegedly threw a mug at a strip club bartender.

On Wednesday, Ward told reporters that while his recent legal entanglement was "a little embarrassing," he added that it was also "kind of blown out of proportion."

"It was basically a ticket or a summons, and it wasn't supposed to be a warrant," he said, according to the Denver Post. "There was miscommunication between the police department and myself, so that's why they issued that. But that's all being resolved."

The details: A female bartender at PTs All Nude club told police that she told Ward that he couldn't bring a glass bottle into the club because outside food and drinks were prohibited. She then told club security to tell Ward to take the glass bottle outside.

Several minutes later, Ward returned to the bar and ordered a non-alcoholic drink. He then poured something from his glass bottle into the just-ordered non-alcoholic drink. The bartender took the drink from Ward and poured it out, and at that point, Ward allegedly threw the glass bottle at the bartender.

Police returned to the club on May 16 to watch the surveillance video, which showed a man, believed to be Ward, throw a glass mug at the bartender.

Once Ward learned of the summons he, along with his attorney, appeared in court where he was issued a summons and given a June 23 court hearing.

Coach John Fox said he spoke to Ward prior the incident making headlines.

"Like all legal processes, we do have a process," Fox said. "We feel good about what direction it's going, and we'll work through it."

Ward, meanwhile, says he has learned his lesson.

"You have to be aware of what you do in certain situations and times of the day," he said. "I've learned from that, and I'm looking forward to moving on."

Deco GettyImagesBrazil-born Deco ended his career last year after a three-year stint with Fluminense.

SAO PAULO -- Former Portugal international Deco said Thursday he may file a lawsuit against WADA and the Brazilian laboratory that said he tested positive for doping last year.

Deco, who retired from the game last August, was cleared of doping by the Court of Arbitration for Sport this week and his one-year ban imposed last September was annulled by FIFA and the Brazilian football federation.

The doping tests that led to his conviction were conducted by Rio de Janeiro laboratory Ladetec, which lost its accreditation by the World Anti-Doping Agency and has since been suspended from World Cup testing.

"If there was a mistake, both WADA and Ladetec are responsible for it," the Brazilian-born player said in a statement on Thursday, noting that the laboratory was still accredited by the anti-doping agency when he was tested.

Deco said the doping conviction "may have helped anticipate" the end of his career. He was initially suspended one month by Brazil's sports tribunal in early 2013, but in a second trial last September, after he had retired, the player was banned for a year.

"I lost contracts, I lost a lot of things. This can't happen because of a mistake," Deco said. "I was significantly affected by this. I will talk to my lawyers and we will decide what we will do."

The 36-year-old Deco allegedly tested positive for two banned substances after playing in a Rio state championship match for Fluminense. His samples were re-tested in Switzerland and CAS said in its ruling on Tuesday that "it could not be established" that the player committed any anti-doping rule violation.

"It just proved what I already knew," Deco said. "I knew exactly what I did my entire career. I never used anything that was prohibited. I knew that it was either a mistake by the pharmacy that produced the vitamins that I took or a mistake in the analysis of the urine."

The lab said that Deco's samples contained hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic which can mask the presence of other drugs, and tamoxifen, which can help players cope with the side effects of using steroids.

Because of the problems with Ladetec, FIFA will have to fly doping samples to Switzerland for testing during next month's World Cup.

The lab's role for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro remains uncertain. It was previously cited for reporting a false positive for a volleyball player.

Deco played for Portugal at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, and for Barcelona, Chelsea and Porto.

Wenger signs new Arsenal deal

Arsene Wenger has signed a new three-year contract that will see him remain in charge of Arsenal until 2017.

Arsenal ended their nine-year trophy drought with a dramatic 3-2 extra-time win over Hull City in the FA Cup final earlier this month.

And Wenger, whose previous deal was due to expire in June, has agreed fresh terms that will take him beyond 20 years’ service with the Premier League club.

Wenger told the club’s official website: “I want to stay and to continue to develop the team and the club. We are entering a very exciting period. We have a strong squad, financial stability and huge support around the world.

“We are all determined to bring more success to this club.

“The club has always shown faith in me and I’m very grateful for that. We have gone through fantastic periods and also periods where we have had to stick together.

“Every time when that togetherness was tested I got the right response. I think I have shown some loyalty as well towards this club and hopefully we can make some more history. I am sure we can.”

Wenger, 64, took over at Arsenal in August 1996 and has won three Premier League titles and five FA Cups in his time in London.

The success against Hull at Wembley ended a long wait for silverware, with Wenger’s future having been regularly questioned previously due to a lack of trophies.

Arsenal have qualified for the UEFA Champions League in each of the last 17 seasons but have failed to win the league since 2004.

They made the early running in the title race last season but ended up in a battle just to claim fourth spot.

Heavy away defeats against fellow high-flyers Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Everton put paid to their ambitions, but Wenger has retained the confidence of the club’s board of directors.

It remains to be seen whether he will now break the club’s tradition of spending relatively modestly in the transfer market, an approach that has been criticised by sections of Arsenal’s supporters.

Dwyane Wade knows the Heat's future lies behind LeBron James. (USATSI) Dwyane Wade knows the Heat's future lies behind LeBron James. (USATSI)

More postseason coverage: Playoff schedule, results | Latest news, notes

Dwyane Wade told USA Today Tuesday that people shouldn't put the onus of whether LeBron James returns to Miami or not on him. James can opt out this summer and become an unrestricted free agent after four years with the Miami Heat.

"Just don't solely put it on me," Wade said, laughing. "That's what I'm saying. Don't put the X on me. ... There's a lot that goes into, so just don't say, 'If Dwyane Wade doesn't have the year that we're accustomed to, it's over.' "

via Healthy Dwyane Wade doesn't want blame if LeBron James leaves Miami Heat.

It's an interesting comment from Wade, essentially trying to downplay his responsiblity if the super team that they put together in 2010 were to detach and scatter this summer. It's also a strange departure from Wade's usual confidence about his health, essentially admitting that he can't be the rock he was when the Heat came together.

That said, Wade is having an unbelievable postseason. He's on pace to become the only guard in NBA history and one of only five players ever to average 19-3-4 on at least 52 percent shooting in the playoffs at 32 years of age or older. What he's doing has literally never been done by a guard before.

We all assumed Wade was on the slide out, that he would fade from relevance. But with James taking the lead, and with an aggressive rest plan that saw him only play in 54 games this season, Wade is surging. He looks spry, he looks ready, and there is every reason to believe he could help the Heat continue their success for several more seasons if James comes back.

Just don't put it on him if it doesn't happen.

Stephen Curry says he’s still adjusting to Mark Jackson being gone, wants Warriors to keep Klay Thompson

Golden State’s players thought they had something special — a real locker room chemistry, a team that won 51 games, a team that is both entertaining and on the rise.

Then days into the offseason coach Mark Jackson was let go over the objection of players. Not long after rumors started to come up about the Warriors wanting to get into the Kevin Love trade conversation, and would they give up Klay Thompson to get him?

Through all of it Warriors players have been silent. There were no welcoming tweets for Steve Kerr, something done out of respect for Jackson.

But in accepting the NBA’s 2013-14 Kia Community Assist Season long Award Stephen Curry was in front of the microphones and spoke to CSNBayArea.com’s Monte Poole about this offseason. He clearly misses Jackson.

“He was a sign of stability for me,” Curry said Thursday. “I had three coaches in three years and (Jackson) embodies what I know as good around here with the Warriors, winning and that kind of feel. It was a lot different in my first two years. I love Coach (Keith) Smart and Coach (Don) Nelson, but he embodied winning. And it’s tough to see that end….

“The feeling was how quick things happened after the season was kind of a shock,” he said. “It took some time to respond and react. Obviously, they made a semi-quick hire. As the summer goes on and we remove ourselves from last year and look forward to next year, we’ll be fine.

“It’s just tough. There’s no sugarcoating it. It was a weird, expedited situation that we didn’t see coming. Guys are human and have got to adjust to it and (need) some time to respond. That’s kind of what happened. I think we’ll be fine once we have a clear picture of what’s going on next year.”

Curry also wants Klay Thompson to remain as his backcourt running mate.

“I definitely want him to continue be my backcourt mate and keep pushing,” Curry said, “keep growing together and not to waste the nickname.”

“I love playing with him,” Curry said. “He makes me better. I try to make him better. How much better he’s gotten since Day 1 is kind of scary. He’s such a great two-way player. He hasn’t come anywhere close to hitting the ceiling.”

I understand Curry saying that, but if they need to move Thompson (with David Lee and maybe other small pieces) to get Kevin Love, you pull that trigger. I love Thompson’s game, but Love’s skill set is far more unique and would help Curry win faster. Not that this trade is likely.

As always in professional sports, if the Warriors are winning things will work themselves out, both with Kerr and whatever roster changes may come to Golden State. To paraphrase Daryl Morey, chemistry is a three game winning streak.

But if the Warriors struggle with all the adjustments next year, things are going to get interesting. And everyone is going to be pointing the finger at ownership, not the players.

Sampaoli wary of Australia

Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli says his team’s first match of the World Cup against Australia will be their hardest.

The South American side kick-off their Group B campaign again Ange Postecoglou’s unfancied team at Cuiaba’s Arena Pantanal on June 13 before facing Spain and the Netherlands.

And despite the Socceroos having been written off as likely whipping boys, Sampaoli has claimed to be wary of a match his players cannot afford to lose if they are to progress to the knockout stages.

“Always the first opponent is the most complicated,” he said.

“In a tournament where you need to quickly (gain points), there will be nervousness, beyond what Australia can offer.

“That will be the hardest game … anxiety becomes secondary when you have so much work to do. (This is) no time to think about how many days are left to face Australia or who are the players going out. We must continue to strengthen the group.”

While Brazil and Argentina are favourites to win on the ‘home soil’ of South America, Sampaoli’s talented side are also being talked up as potential dark horses, with the weight of domestic expectations hanging over his players.

“The enthusiasm of the people requires us to prepare in the best way,” he said.

“(We will) try … all through the preparation for the players (to) arrive in the best way to confront many rivals (with different qualities). Beyond the position (the) team will finish in our group, it is important that Chile does not lose shape against such prestigious opponents.

“My responsibility is to prepare the squad to face a very competitive group. I must try (to make sure) that players who came in (at) different point of preparation are (at their) best.

“Our priority is to work, (the intensity of) which is negotiable. Planning is scheduled in a certain way, but here athletes have to (combine) the mental with the physical (and) with the football. So, that’s what we are (at).”

Former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was arraigned Wednesday in Suffolk Superior Court on seven charges, including two counts of first-degree murder in the July 2012 drive-by shooting deaths of two men on the streets of Boston.

Hernandez pleaded not guilty to the charges, which also included three counts of armed assault with intent to murder, and one count each of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Hernandez was indicted on the double-murder charge earlier this month. During a May 15 press conference, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley explained that the victims, who didn't know Hernandez, were at the same nightclub as the former NFL player on the night of the murders.

“Mr. (Daniel) Abreu and Mr. (Safiro) Furtado were ambushed and executed as they drove home. Aaron Hernandez is the principal, the shooter, and the person responsible for taking the lives of the two victims." Conley said at the time.

Conley said that as Abreu and Furtado left the nightclub around 2 a.m., they were followed by Hernandez, who was in an SUV. As Abreau and Furtado stopped at a red light, the SUV that carried Hernandez pulled up on the right and Hernandez opened fire with a .38 caliber revolver. Abreu, who was driving, was shot multiple times, including a fatal shot to the chest. Furtado, in the front passenger seat, was also shot multiple times, including a fatal shot to the head. Three of the five passengers in the car were shot.

The reason for the shooting, as explained Wednesday by Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney Patrick Haggan:

More details:

* The next morning, Haggan said, Hernandez checked media reports about the shooting and called his cousin to pick up the SUV used in the killings. Hernandez, who has been in jail since last summer and is currently awaiting trial on first-degree murder charges in the shooting death of Odin Lloyd, then rented a car, which he also did the day after he allegedly shot Lloyd.

* Cell phone records put Hernandez at the scene of the double-murder.

* The judge denied a request to remove Hernandez's handcuffs during the arraignment.

In addition to the families of Abreau and Furtado, Lloyd's mother, as well as Hernandez's fiancée, Shayanna Jenkins, were in the courtroom.

* Via the Associated Press: "Authorities have not said if there is any connection between the 2012 killings and Lloyd's slaying. Lloyd's body was found in an industrial area near Hernandez's home in North Attleborough. Lloyd was dating a sister of Hernandez's fiancee."

* Hernandez's next hearing is set for June 24.

Sagna confirms Arsenal exit

Bacary Sagna has confirmed his intention to leave Arsenal.

The France international right-back’s future has been the subject of much speculation in recent months, as his Arsenal contract expires at the end of June.

Sagna has been heavily linked with a switch to Premier League champions Manchester City, and the 31-year-old has now gone public with his desire to depart the Emirates Stadium.

The former Auxerre man also indicated his next move will be announced sooner rather than later, as he wants his future to be resolved before the FIFA World Cup begins next month.

“It’s no longer a secret – I will leave Arsenal for sure,” Sagna, who is currently with the France squad ahead of the tournament in Brazil, told L’Equipe.

“They tried to make an effort, but the discussions have not gone in the direction I wished.

“There are a lot of calls, a lot of speculation.

“I’ll sort it all out before the start of the World Cup.”

Sagna signed for Arsenal from Auxerre in July 2007, and made over 300 appearances for the club – his last game being the FA Cup final victory over Hull City earlier this month.

Is Alex Smith really worth $18 million per year? (USATSI) Is Alex Smith really worth $18 million per year? (USATSI)

More NFL offseason: League minicamp dates | Latest news, notes

With Alex Smith entering the final year of a contract that will pay him $7.5 million in 2014, it's clear the 30-year-old will want to cash in on another contract.

But in news that otherwise might seem ridiculous, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport writes that Smith wants to be paid more than the seven-year, $126.7 million deal that Bears quarterback Jay Cutler signed in January. The talks between the Chiefs and Smith reportedly are going nowhere. Which is understandable if the desire to top Cutler's average of $18.1 million per year is true.

According to Smith's wife, though, it's not.

(BTW, props to Mrs. Smith for getting the you are/you're/your conundrum correct twice in the same tweet.)

Hey, I'm sure Smith would like to make as much or more than Cutler. And it's true that Smith's career has been resurrected in Kansas City. And yeah, his stats from 2013 look nice (a 60.6 completion percentage, 23 touchdowns vs. seven interceptions, an 89.1 quarterback rating).

But still, are there many people, besides maybe Mrs. Smith, that would argue that Smith is a top-10 quarterback? Or that you'd rather have him under center than Cutler? I certainly wouldn't.

But of course, there's also this.

As usual, we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Chargers WR Malcom Floyd has been fully cleared for contact

The Chargers expected it would happen, and now it has: Wide receiver Malcom Floyd has been fully cleared for contact and will be able to resume his NFL career after a neck injury early last season put his professional future in limbo."Cleared for contact," Floyd said Tuesday via Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego. "Cleared for everything. There are no risks. I'm good to go."

I'm happy for Floyd. It's a nice comeback story after he took a brutal hit, and hopefully Floyd can keep progressing to the point where he becomes a starter once again. He is more valuable to the Chargers than in fantasy as his ceiling is being a low-end WR3. He will turn 33 years old this September. We have probably seen his most productive games.

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has dismissed allegations of match-fixing following a mistake from his goalkeeper Austin Ejide against Scotland on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the Daily Telegraph reported on its website that officers from the National Crime Agency were investigating attempts to fix the match at Fulham's Craven Cottage ground.

The match went ahead despite those claims, which are under police investigation, and ended in a 2-2 draw after Uche Nwofor scored a late leveller.

However, an error from goalkeeper Ejide was the subject of contention after he spilled the ball into his own net, only to see the goal ruled out by referee Lee Probert for a foul by Grant Hanley.

Speaking after the match, Keshi, whose side face Argentina, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iran at this summer's World Cup, said: "We did [talk about it] because it's something ridiculous, something that we don't know where it's coming from.

"We're not gamblers, we are football players. I don't even know where that is coming from, we don't know what happened, match-fixing or no match-fixing.

"This is the first time I've been a coach or been a player and the first time I'm hearing this, match-fixing. I don't think it had anything to do with our build-up or the game."

Duffy targeting Everton breakthrough

Shane Duffy is looking at the 2014-15 Premier League campaign as his chance to stake his claim for a spot in Everton’s first team.

The 22-year-old defender spent the previous season on loan at Championship outfit Yeovil Town, and has made just five top-flight appearances for the Goodison Park club in his fledgling career.

Duffy was an unused substitute for Republic of Ireland in their 2-1 friendly defeat to Turkey on Sunday, and is yet to earn a senior cap, but first the centre-back is concentrating on making an impact at Everton.

“Roberto (Everton manager Martinez) told me that pre-season was my chance to shine and he’s said to me that if I am where he thinks I am – from what he’s seen of me this season – then I’m going to be involved,” he told the club’s official website.

“And if I’m not, we’ll see at the end of pre-season what we’re going to do. It’s a big summer for me, it’s up to me.

“Seeing Seamus (Coleman) progress is brilliant for me because he’s such a hard worker and it’s a reward for how he lives.

“And he’s very good to me, he says, ‘If I can do it, you can do it’, so we’ll see what happens.”

Will Roger Goodell make an example of Jim Irsay? (USATSI) Will Roger Goodell make an example of Jim Irsay? (USATSI)

More NFL offseason: League minicamp dates | Latest news, notes

On Friday, Colts owner Jim Irsay was charged with two counts of impaired driving following a March arrest. The news means that the league, which has yet to officially weigh in on the matter, will likely soon discipline Irsay.

Former offensive lineman Eric Winston, now the new head of the NFL Players Association, said over the weekend that if commissioner Roger Goodell is truly concerned about protecting the league's image, he needs to send a message when punishing Irsay.

“Owners own for decades,” Winston told TheMMQB.com's Peter King. “Players, if we're lucky, might play for a decade. If protecting the shield is the most important thing, and owners are the ones most responsible for the league's future, the owners have to be held to a higher standard. So I don't understand how we can be talking about comparing the punishment of a player to what the league might do to an owner. Owners should be held to the highest of standards. And I can tell you, players are watching. A lot of players are watching. This has been on players' minds for quite a while.”

Goodell, who has a history of punishing players before the legal system runs its course, has said in recent weeks that he would wait for more information on Irsay's situation before making a decision.

But after Irsay's charges were announced, the league released this statement: "The NFL's Personal Conduct Policy applies to all league personnel and holds all of us accountable. We are reviewing the matter and will take appropriate action in accordance with the policy."

King writes that "Goodell has to be considering a large fine and removing Irsay from any involvement with the Colts for months," adding that "any penalty that doesn't included future random testing will be dangerous and wrong-headed."

Shortly after Irsay's arrest two months ago, Falcons wide receiver Roddy White tweeted about Irsay's likely punishment, "I'm guessing a million dollar fine will come which is nothing to a man that makes billions."

And in response to a tweet that noted, "Odd that when players do it people call them stupid for not calling a cab with all their money ... haven't seen it with Irsay," White wrote at the time, "So true," before adding, "I don't think Irsay is a bad guy I actually like him as an owner but it was a bad mistake."

Now it will be up to Goodell to show that owners are held to the same standard -- if not a higher one -- than players.

BenJarvus Green-Ellis was the Bengals' 3rd-team RB during Tuesday OTAs

No one is competing with Giovani Bernard to be the Bengals' starting running back. He is the starter, no questions asked. That was emphasized during Tuesday's organized team activities as Bernard was the running back when the first-team offense was on the field. But the job to back up Bernard is up for grabs. And judging from Tuesday's developments, it seems like the rookie is ahead of the veteran at this early stage. According to Paul Dehner Jr. of the Cincinnati Enquirer, second-round pick Jeremy Hill lined up with the second-team offense, and BenJavrus Green-Ellis ran with the third team.

BJG-E has averaged less than four yards per carry each season since 2011. He bottomed out at 3.4 yards per carry last season. If Hill can get up to speed quickly with the pro game, the Bengals should have no problem letting Green-Ellis go and saving a couple million dollars in the process. Bernard will be the team's majority runner and a probable RB1. Meanwhile, the 235-pound Hill could be a touchdown maven.

Rahim Moore feels healthy and ready to go. (USATSI) Rahim Moore feels healthy and ready to go. (USATSI)

More NFL offseason: League minicamp dates | Latest news, notes

When the Broncos were forced to place safety Rahim Moore on injured reserve last November, ending his 2013 season, Denver president John Elway talked about how painful the loss was to the team.

But for Moore, who had been diagnosed with lateral compartment syndrome, the injury could have forced him to lose his leg. Or it could have killed him.

As theMMQB.com recounts, Moore felt intense pain in his leg a few hours after the Broncos had played the Chiefs in Week 11. Already, his leg had felt "off" during pregame warmups, and eventually, he left the game for good in the second quarter.

By Monday morning, he was in surgery to help relieve the LCS -- which occurs when an injury builds swelling, which then causes extreme pressure inside an enclosed space in the body. The strange thing about Moore's case is that he never suffered a bad injury leading up to the LCS.

But during warmups before the Chiefs game, he could feel the pain in his leg, and after coming out for good, an x-ray revealed no broken bones. Moore wondered what else could be causing the pain. Later that night, as he was preparing for bed, the pain returned.

More from theMMQB.com:

“All of a sudden, my leg just got weak,” Moore says. “I felt like I had about 30 Band-Aids on my knee, and there was no feeling down my leg. I started to tear up, and I was like, What's going on?”

At Sky Ridge Medical Center, doctors diagnosed him with acute compartment syndrome, which can also arise from vigorous exercise and explains why the pain returned with such fervor several hours after he'd last been active (the symptoms would have dissipated if it were chronic compartment syndrome).

Cases like Moore's -- acute compartment syndrome with no broken bone -- are rare, and timing is always of the essence. Almost immediately, doctors performed a needle test to gauge the pressure, which left no doubt that compartment syndrome was besieging his leg. Doctors told Moore that had he waited to come in until noon on Monday, they would have had to amputate. Any longer than that, he could have died.

Moore simply told them, “You are not cutting my leg off. That's not happening.”

Moore ended up needing two procedures in order to clean out the dead tissue and relieve the pressure from his leg. The Broncos had placed him on the IR list that could have allowed him to return by the end of the season, but it took him until January to start running.

But now, Moore seems healthy, and though there's a chance the LCS could return, he's ready to be back on to the field. And thankful to have the chance to do so.

“I didn't know if I would ever walk again," Moore said. “I didn't know if I would ever be the Rahim that I know I can be."

Raiders HC Dennis Allen says Matt Schaub is a top-10 QB

I don't even know where to begin. Here's Steve Corkran of the Contra Costa Times via Twitter: "(Head coach Dennis) Allen reiterated that Matt Schaub was brought in to be the #Raiders starting quarterback this season. He called Schaub a top-10 quarterback."

Schaub was the starting quarterback for majority of the season for the worst team in football last year. And he was a major reason why the Texans were so bad. Schaub committed 15 turnovers and threw just 10 touchdowns in games. But hey, that second number rises to 14 if you include the touchdowns the defense scored directly off of one of Schaub's picks. He turns 33 years old next month and is starting over on another bad team with a 30-year-old No. 1 wideout who has never been put in that role before.I can't imagine Schaub will be any worse than he was, but that doesn't mean he'll be any good. He certainly won't be a top-10 quarterback. He's a QB3 in fantasy.By the way, Schaub threw a pick-six to defensive end Justin Tuck during Tuesday's practice.

San Antonio Spurs center Tiago Splitter has been fined $5,000 for flopping, the NBA announced on Wednesday. The infraction occurred in the second quarter of Tuesday's Game 4 of the Western Conference finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder, when Splitter was matched up with Serge Ibaka.

As Ibaka put his forearm into Splitter, he fell down like he'd been punched in the face. It was an obvious flop, and the 6-foot-11, 245-pound big man sprung up immediately when he realized the officials didn't fall for it. It was a nice try, I guess, but it went about as well as most things did for the Spurs in their 105-92 loss.

Report: Stan Van Gundy ready to offer Stu Jackson role of Pistons’ general manager

New Pistons president/coach Stan Van Gundy is searching for a general manager to serve between his two spots on the organizational flow chart – “a strategic thinker and a dealmaker, a guy who’s really thinking big picture.”

How about Stu Jackson?

Van Gundy, who assisted Jackson at the University of Wisconsin, interviewed the former Grizzlies general manager/coach and former NBA executive vice president of basketball operations. Apparently the talk went well from all ends – the Pistons’ ownership also has a say in the hire.

Matt Dery of Detroit Sports 105.1:

This very well could be an offer to offer – as in the Pistons will offer the job only if Jackson first says he’ll accept. That way, if Jackson ultimately passes, the Pistons can still say they got their first choice when they hire someone else.

In his previous team job, Jackson oversaw a series of – perhaps somewhat unavoidable – blunders made by the Vancouver Grizzlies.

He gave Bryant Reeves a huge contract, but Big Country’s body broke down. He drafted Antonio Daniels No. 4, but the next four picks – Tony Battie, Ron Mercer,Tim Thomas andAdonal Foyle – were also underwhelming (Tracy McGrady went No. 9). He drafted Steve Francis No. 2 after Francis threatened not to sign with Vancouver, but Francis followed through with a holdout and Jackson got spare parts when dealing him to Houston.

Overall, the Grizzlies went 78-300 (.206) – including a 6-33 (.154) when he served as head coach – during Jackson’s five-year tenure. No matter who ran the Canadian expansion team, he was bound to face problems. But Jackson didn’t do much, even given his limitations, to impress.

After resigning from the Grizzlies – before they could fire him – Jackson took his job with the NBA. In 13 years with the Association, Jackson became known for handing out fines, but his roles were spread wider. In the process, he surely communicated frequently with team personnel.

If the Pistons hire Jackson, it should be for his contacts around the league. Van Gundy isn’t some anonymous figure, but he hasn’t worked with opposing front offices and agents the way Jackson has.

The Pistons still have a couple Joe Dumars assistants – Ken Catanella and George David – on the payroll, and Van Gundy has spoken positively about both. With Catanella focusing on analytics and the salary cap and David on the draft, this front office could complement each other well.

Still, it seems Detroit could have targeted someone with a more successful front-office record. Then again, when the other candidates are Scott Layden (who ruined the Knicks before Isiah Thomas had a chance to continue their problems) and Otis Smith (who showed little regard for Orlando’s cap), maybe Jackson is the best choice.

Davin Joseph could very well have a job in St. Louis soon. (USATSI) Davin Joseph could very well have a job in St. Louis soon. (USATSI)

More NFL offseason: League minicamp dates | Latest news, notes

Earlier this offseason, the Buccaneers tried and failed to trade guard Davin Joseph before ultimately releasing him.

But the two-time Pro Bowler now has a new job with the Rams.

St. Louis is in the middle of reworking its offensive line. It drafted tackle Greg Robinson with the No. 2 overall pick this month and could make him the starting left guard this year, and though guard Rodger Saffold left to sign a free agent deal with the Raiders, he returned to St. Louis when Oakland failed him during his physical.

Meanwhile, Jake Long seems entrenched at left tackle if he's successful at rehabbing from knee surgery.

All of which means Joseph, who hasn't played well the past few years, could be a backup with the Rams. But Pro Football Focus also sent out this Twitter warning a few months ago. So, for gosh sakes, take caution, St. Louis.

More NFL offseason: League minicamp dates | Latest news, notes

While Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee, who badly hurt himself during the first day of OTAs, underwent an MRI on his knee on Tuesday afternoon, it sounds like the team won't update his condition until Wednesday.

But multiple outlets are reporting that the team is fearful that Lee has torn his ACL, and ESPN's Ed Werder reported late Tuesday night that Lee was told that the MRI confirmed the torn ACL and that he is expected to miss the 2014 season.

During Tuesday's practice, running back DeMarco Murray took a screen pass from Brandon Weeden, and with Lee running over to make a play, he slipped just before he was hit by first-round pick, guard Zack Martin. It appeared that the knee injury happened just before Martin smacked Lee.

"I don't really know what happened, two guys playing hard and running to the ball, so we'll see what happens,” Martin said, via the Dallas Morning News. “It sucks to see someone go down. It happens and I can only hope for the best.”

With Lee on the ground, safety J.J. Wilcox slapped his hands together in anger, and safety Barry Church put his hands on his knees with his head down before forcefully unstrapping his helmet (you can watch video of the play here).

Wrote CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora: "Given that this injury was suffered during an OTA, which is supposed to be contact-free, the NFLPA could investigate the Cowboys, as Lee tumbled with Martin. However, it sounds like a freak accident at this point in which Lee slipped, and he has absolved any teammate or coaches in explaining the circumstances of the injury."

"Sean's had to deal with injuries in college and the NFL," coach Jason Garrett said. "He's done everything he can to get himself ready to play. He's as mentally tough of an individual as I've ever been around. He puts his best foot forward and strives to be his best. I don't anticipate this being any different."

Lee, entering his fifth year in the league, has never played a full 16-game season. He's missed 15 combined contests in the last two seasons.

"I need to find a way to stay healthy, whether it's finding a way to be stronger and not having the hamstring deal or it's hopefully having a little bit better luck," Lee said in February. "I need a combination of both going forward."

Bears WR Domenik Hixon tears right ACL for third time, indicates he will retire

Domenik Hixon's days in the NFL seem to be over after he suffered a torn right ACL for the third time in his career on Tuesday. Here is what the Bears wideout and kick returner wrote on Facebook:"I tore my ACL today for the 3rd time today! I'm disappointed that I won't be playing for a bears team that has the players and coaches to WIN the Super Bowl. I thank God for letting me live my dream of playing in the NFL for 8 years plus. It has truly been FUN!"The injury occurred during the day's OTAs. Hixon previously tore the same ligament in the same knee in 2010 and 2011.

It's hard not to feel bad for a guy when stuff like this happens three times in four years. Hixon signed a one-year deal with the Bears in March. He was a special teams player for the majority of his career. His career year on offense came in 2008 when he caught 43 passes for 596 yards and two touchdowns. He also won two Super Bowl rings while with the Giants.

Michel Platini PA PhotosUEFA president Michel Platini

NYON, Switzerland -- UEFA has signed a working agreement with Europol to try and help eradicate match-fixing from the game.

- Marcotti: What's match-fixing about?

Europol director Rob Wainwright says it is supporting police services across Europe in nine investigations of organised crime syndicates linked to match-fixing.

No details of the investigations were given at a signing ceremony with UEFA President Michel Platini, who says fighting such corruption is a personal priority for him as a former player.

Wainwright says Europol, the European Union police agency, will share information on suspected fixing and illegal betting with UEFA and its 54 member federations. The agency has a sports corruption unit comprising 15 EU members and two other countries.

Wainwright says match-fixing is not a major problem in European football ''but we are making sure it doesn't become one.''

The news comes on the same day that the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) ordered member associations to appoint integrity officers in a renewed bid to tackle corruption and match-fixing in the region.

The call has been prompted by a series of recent incidents, including the expulsion of the Vissai Ninh Binh team from the Vietnam domestic league after players admitted being paid to fix a match.

AFC president Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa told a Football Integrity and Security summit in Doha last week ''when talking about integrity in football, the fight against match-fixing rises as top a priority.''

In a statement on its website Tuesday, the AFC said it has set a deadline of June 30 for its members to appoint integrity officers.

''Responsibilities of the integrity officer are to establish and maintain integrity initiatives within the [member associations], receive information related to match-fixing matters within ... and conduct inquiries or investigations as an administrative fact finder in coordination with AFC and relevant national law enforcement agencies,'' the statement said.

"Match-fixing is a dangerous threat to the game, therefore the AFC along with its member associations strive to protect the integrity of its competitions.''

Australian media this week published claims reportedly made in a book by Singaporean convicted match-fixer Wilson Raj Perumal that he had influenced the outcome of a 2010 friendly between Australia and Egypt, which Egypt won 3-0.

FIFA, football's world governing body, has linked Perumal to a conspiracy to fix matches in Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and Central and South America.

Perumal, who has spent time in prisons in Singapore and Finland, was arrested in Helsinki last month on an international arrest warrant.

In cases reported this week by Fairfax Media and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Perumal wrote that he had ''arranged'' the appointment of a Bulgarian referee to the match between Australia and Egypt, then profited by betting there would be three goals scored in the match. Egypt's third goal was a penalty.

Perumal also claims he caused a 2008 Intercontinental Cup match between the Australia and Togo under-23 teams to be called off after half-time when wagers of around $70,000 were under threat. Football Federation Australia responded to the reports this week by saying the cases had nothing to do with Australian players and declined further comment.
