John Abraham's NFL career could be at its end. (USATSI)
It looks like John Abraham's career with the Cardinals -- and maybe his career as a whole -- could be coming to a close.
Arizona placed the linebacker on injured reserve Friday afternoon because of concussions.
Previously, the Cardinals announced Abraham was taking time off from the team and game after he texted coach Bruce Arians to say his "heart isn't in the game anymore."
But Abraham came back to the team and appeared prepared to try and play out the season.
Instead, he's being shut down because of excessive concussions.
From a football perspective, it's a big blow for the Cards. Without Abraham -- Darnell Dockett (several injuries) and Daryl Washington (suspension) as well on the defensive end of things -- Arizona could struggle to generate a pass rush.
They've done a good job making up for losses thus far, though, so don't count them out just yet.
For Abraham, personally, it's the smart move. If he's struggling off the field with his health, time off from the game is only a good thing.
Abraham, 36, is in the final year of his contract with the Cardinals.

Falcons WR Julio Jones posts 161 receiving yards, two TDs in win
With Falcons WR Roddy White sitting out due to a hamstring injury, Julio Jones became Matt Ryan's primary target on Thursday night. In the most dominant performance by any WR this season, Jones was able to post nine receptions for 161 yards and two TDs.
There isn't much else to say. Jones is clearly the WR1 you drafted him to be and is matchup-proof. It is worth noting, however, that any time White misses game action, it clearly has a positive effect on Julio's numbers.
