Chris Mullin doesn't want to coach... for now. (USATSI) Chris Mullin doesn't want to coach... for now. (USATSI)

In the whirlwind that has formed since the Sacramento Kings unexpectedly fired coach Michael Malone Sunday night, Kings' owner Vivek Ranadivé has been urging "advisor to the owner" Chris Mullin to take over the vacant coaching slot. While Mullin has reportedly been giving "serious consideration" to taking on coaching responsibilities for the first time in his career, it looks like a move to the sidelines won't be happening during this season.

ESPN.com is reporting that Mullin is resisting the courtship by the Kings owner to move to the coaching position because he wants the benefit of a full training camp and hiring a veteran coaching staff to help him out. Basically, he wants to model his jump into coaching, assuming he takes the leap, after Golden State Warriors' coach Steve Kerr.

Chris Mullin is resisting the invitation to make an in-season move from an advisory role to the bench ‎of the Sacramento Kings, according to NBA coaching sources.

Sources told ESPN.com that Kings owner Vivek Ranadive has spent much of the last 24 hours lobbying Mullin to replace the fired Mike Malone despite his lack of NBA coaching experience. But sources say Mullin has reservations about making such a leap in the middle of the season, without the benefit of training camp or the time to assemble a veteran-laden coaching staff like Steve Kerr has as a rookie head coach at Golden State.

Sources say that Mullin, in recent months, has indeed expressed some interest to associates about trying his hand at coaching down the road. But if he can ultimately be persuaded to take the Kings' job, sources say, chances are far greater that it would happen going into next season as opposed to an in-season appointment.

This makes sense if you're Mullin because you want to be as prepared as possible if you're going to take up coaching. Jumping in mid-season without any experience could be a bit of a disaster, and there's added pressure considering he's believed to be one of the people that wanted Malone off the sidelines because of philosophical differences regarding the play style and direction of the Kings.

The Kings have Tyrone Corbin to throw to the sidelines for the rest of the season as the interim coach, and if they can convince Mullin or another available coach that the timing and situation are correct, they can always move Corbin back into the assistant staff as the new guy takes over. If Mullin does eventually take over as the coach and waits until the offseason, he can work with the Kings' ownership and front office to make sure the roster and the support staff surrounding him are as ideal as possible.

Nets honor deceased super-fan Jeffrey Gamblero with moment of silence

The Nets lost one of their biggest fans on Saturday, when Jeffrey Gamblero (whose real name is Jeffrey Vanchiro) died after reportedly jumping out of a second-story window.

Gamblero was in the news recently because of an incident at Madison Square Garden where he was dragged from the building by arena security.

The Nets honored him with a moment of silence before tip-off against the Heat on Tuesday, and players wore neon t-shirts with his name on the back during warmups.
