Ray Rice's interview with NBC aired on Tuesday. Ray Rice's interview with NBC aired on Tuesday. (Today)

On Monday Janay Rice appeared on NBC's Today with Matt Lauer and talked openly about where she and her family are and how things unfolded earlier in the year (notably she told Lauer the Ravens suggested the repulsive, victim-blaming press conference from May).

Rice "arrived" at home while Lauer and a pile of television cameras were interviewing Janay and he "agreed" to talk. (Maybe they didn't mean it to sound so impromptu, but it did.) When Rice spoke, he acknowledged he made "a horrendous mistake" in the process by not apologizing to Janay.

"I made a horrendous mistake not apologizing to my wife," Rice said of the press conference. "we were given what to speak about. It wasn't truly coming from us, if you can understand."

Rice said he's been going through counseling recently and that he let the counselor "rip me apart and build me back together."

"Counseling. I'll be honest. What my counselor did was basically rip me apart and build me back together," Rice said. "I couldn't resist it. I was able to let somebody else in and literally tear me down. I wasn't resisting. There was so much you didn't know about yourself.

"You grow up and think you know it all. I had ceiling over my head. I was a professional athlete. That ceiling sometimes is -- you put yourself in a place where you really don't understand where you're going."

Rice also acknowledged how he has to "own" what he did and how he won't be able to just get lost in the shuffle as time marches on.

"This is something as a man you have to own," Rice said. "We're horribly sorry. And I'm horribly sorry for everything I put my family through. I still have to live every day and take my daughter to school, she's going to grow up and the way the Internet works is she's going to Google her father's name and the first thing that's going to come up ... is ... we know it's going to come up."

Additionally, Rice said he understands life in football could be over and he's prepared to move on if he has to.

"If I never play football again, I'll be honest with you, I would adapt into life and I would sacrifice more so she can have a better future," Rice said.

UPDATE: Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams has broken finger

Update: Williams has been officially diagnosed with a broken right middle finger. He is listed as day-to-day for now.---------------------------------------------------------------------------Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said Monday he believes that running back DeAngelo Williams broke his right hand in Sunday's 31-13 loss to Minnesota. Williams finished the game but was ineffective, rushing for just 21 yards on seven carries.Williams has missed significant time this season due to hamstring and ankle issues and has compiled only 219 rushing yards in six games. He has not reached the end zone in 2014.

While it's unfortunate for Williams, it helps fantasy owners of RB Jonathan Stewart. The Panthers' backfield has been a source of fantasy frustration for what seems like a decade. Neither back can stay healthy. When they are, it seems like it's at the same time, creating a split. With Stewart healthy and Williams perhaps sidelined, this actually opens up the door for Stewart to be used as a possible flex play, especially over the next two weeks. In Weeks 14 and 15, the Panthers play the Saints and Buccaneers, respectively. Both defenses rank in the bottom 10 teams versus fantasy running backs.

Browns RB Terrance West criticized by head coach for fumbling

Browns head coach Mike Pettine criticized rookie running back Terrance West after Sunday's loss in Buffalo. His ire was focused on one play when the Browns were trailing 7-3 in the third quarter. West fumbled the football, allowing Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes to return it for a touchdown."You can't be that loose with the football, it's inexcusable," Pettine said. "West really changed the whole flow of the game. It would have been a one-score game, and that's the frustrating thing."Close games are going to come down to turnovers. Like I said, the West fumble changed everything. It's inexcusable." West may go into Coach Pettine's doghouse in the short term OR could have a good week of practice and be the team's starter this week versus the Colts. It's been very tough to get a read on the Browns' running game this season and this week will be no different. Given the coach's comments after the loss, basically throwing West under the bus for the defeat, one would have to believe that this news will benefit West's committee partner, Isaiah Crowell, who has received 18 more touches and gained about 100 yards more than West over the past three weeks. Stephen Curry says he doesn’t second-guess contract extension that leaves him extremely underpaid

I hate Stephen Curry’s contract.

Curry signed a four-year, $44 million extension in 2012 – after a series of ankle injuries. That extenuating circumstance allowed the Warriors to pay Curry a team-friendly salary now that Curry has seemingly put his injury issues behind him.

But whenever another player’s salary is being discussed, someone inevitably mentions, “If Stephen Curry makes $11 million per year…” as if that has anything to do with any other situation. Curry’s extension was a complete outlier, irrelevant to other negotiations. His salary has nothing to do with market value. It just annoyingly provides fodder for foolish arguments.

Curry, the one actually stuck making less than he’s now worth, doesn’t hold nearly as much disdain for the extension.

Curry, via DeAntae Prince of Sporting News:

“Yeah, you expect to continue to get better,” Curry told Sporting News when asked about outplaying the deal. “Obviously, I was in a unique situation, one that I was very comfortable with the decision I made coming off the ankle surgeries.

“I was confident I’d be able to get back, but I didn’t know how long the road was going to be to get back to 100 percent and take my game to the next level. But four years is a long time and you hope you can prove that you’re that max type of player and talent.”

“Hopefully, I’ll be able to capitalize down the road, but I never second-guessed my decision at the time and I still haven’t because I thought it was the right one at the time. I’m healthy and playing well and my team is winning. That’s all I’m really worried about.”

When Curry got the extension, Kurt Helin said the Warriors should have let Curry hit restricted free agency rather than offering him that deal. Brett Pollakoff wrote, “The deal seems like a better one for Curry than it does for the Warriors on the surface.” These opinions were hardly out of line at the time.

Now, Curry is making a case as the NBA’s top point guard. He finished sixth in MVP voting last season, and he’s playing even better this year. His Warriors might be the best team in basketball.

He’s worth a max contract.

As Curry seems to understand, though, the extension is just a reflection of his value in October 2012 and nothing more. Curry can’t become a free agent until 2017, but then, his value should remain much higher.

A few teams made statements in Week 13, including several that took home key road wins:

  • Philadelphia won at Dallas to stake a claim to the NFC East lead

  • Green Bay outplayed New England in the latest mega-matchup

  • Seattle tamed San Francisco on the road and jumped back into a playoff slot

  • Cincinnati earned a nail-biting win at Tampa Bay to become the lone AFC North winner of the week

  • Denver went to frigid Kansas City and completed a season sweep of the Chiefs

  • San Diego jumped into the AFC No. 5 seed position with a road win at Baltimore

We lost the New York Giants and Washington Redskins from playoff contention during Week 13 but still have 26 teams left, which is the lowest number of teams alive for the playoffs with four weeks to play since 2009 (26).

The Colts could become the first team to clinch a playoff berth. (USATSI) The Colts could become the first team to clinch a playoff berth. (USATSI)

As we head into Week 14, we have one solid playoff clinching scenario and two other scenarios that will require at least six outcomes each.

The Indianapolis Colts can clinch the AFC South division title with:

1) A WIN + Houston loss

A Colts win at Cleveland next week will get Indy to 9-7 at worst and a Texans loss at Jacksonville will leave Houston at 9-7 at best. Houston can still split the season head-to-head series on Week 15 and they could tie Indy in division record at 4-2. However, Indianapolis would win the tiebreaker with Houston on record against common opponents at 8-4 vs. 6-6. Thus, an Indy win and Houston loss clinches the AFC South for the Colts.

The Denver Broncos can clinch an AFC playoff spot with:

1) A WIN + Baltimore loss + Pittsburgh loss + Cleveland loss + Houston loss or tie + KC loss

2) A WIN + Baltimore loss + Pittsburgh loss + Cleveland loss + Houston loss or tie + SD loss + KC tie

With a win Denver gets to 10-6 at worst and 8-4 in the conference. With Kansas City's 6th loss, only San Diego beats out Denver in the west due to Denver's sweep of Kansas City and even in a three-way tie with San Diego the Broncos beat the Chiefs. In the South, with a Houston loss/tie, only the division winner beats out Denver.

In the AFC North, giving Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Cleveland their 6th losses is key and the Pittsburgh loss to Cincinnati guarantees that the Bengals would finish no worse than 10-5-1 and win the North as they would beat Denver in Week 16 in this scenario. Pittsburgh can finish tied with Denver on conference record at 8-4, but with the Steelers' loss to Cincinnati the Broncos would win the two-team tiebreaker on common opponents (4-1 to 3-2). Baltimore and Cleveland couldn't catch Denver as they have worse conference records and no head-to-head advantage.

In the AFC East only two teams can get in over Denver. Buffalo would have six losses and a head-to-head loss to Denver and have a worse conference record. The Bills can still win the division, but in a three-way tie with New England and Miami, the Dolphins would finish second due to a sweep of Patriots and would lose the tiebreaker to Denver on a head-to-head loss.

So you have no teams in the South to beat Denver for the wild card, no teams in the North and one team plus a division winner in the East. The final consideration to keep Denver out is can Pittsburgh with their 8-4 conference record use a team in the East in a three-way tie and in each case Denver comes out on top (PIT/BUF/DEN and PIT/NE/DEN) or no worse than second (PIT/MIA/DEN).

In the second scenario, the South, North and East scenarios remain intact and in the West Denver again comes out no worse than second. A San Diego 5th loss and Kansas City at 5.5 losses leading into a Week 17 game between the two and Denver wins any tiebreaker on division record over San Diego or head-to-head over Kansas City or head-to-head in a three-way tie.

Perhaps not the most likely scenarios, but it is a clinching possibility nonetheless.

Other playoff picture notes heading into Week 14:

  • Philadelphia can clinch the NFC East title in two weeks by EITHER winning its next two games at home against Seattle and Dallas OR losing to Seattle AND Dallas loses to Chicago AND Philadelphia beats Dallas in Week 15.

  • If Arizona continues to stumble (the Cardinals have a tough finish with Kansas City and Seattle at home and St. Louis and San Francisco on the road), Green Bay would have the inside track on the No. 1 seed with its head-to-head win over Philadelphia.

  • Dallas is disadvantaged in wild-card ties as all four of the Cowboys' losses are against conference foes (Seattle and Detroit both have two conference losses), but Dallas does have a head-to-head win against Seattle if they are matched up in a two-team tie.

  • With Arizona's loss on Sunday, Seattle now controls its destiny for a division title as the Seahawks are one game back and can sweep the Cardinals with a win at Arizona in Week 16.

  • Even with its loss at Green Bay, New England still is in control of the No. 1 seed in the AFC as it has head-to-head wins against all three other division leaders (Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Denver). HOWEVER, if New England loses at San Diego next week and Miami beats Baltimore next week, Miami could take the division lead with a win at New England in Week 15 due to a season sweep of the Patriots.

  • Cincinnati now has a 1.5-game lead in the AFC North as all three other division teams lost in Week 13, but the Bengals still have three division games left including a pair against Pittsburgh which starts at home in Week 14.

  • With two games left against Cincinnati, Pittsburgh controls its destiny for the AFC North title despite being 1.5 games back of Cincinnati and currently losing a three-way tiebreaker to Baltimore. If Pittsburgh wins out to go 11-5, Baltimore could get to 11-5 but would be the only other team as it plays Cleveland and the Steelers would win a tiebreaker on division record. If Cleveland gets to 11-5 to tie Pittsburgh (including a win over Baltimore), Pittsburgh and Cleveland will tie on division record and common opponents, but the Steelers would win on conference record (9-3 to 7-5).

  • If Indianapolis loses next week and Houston wins, the Texans would be back in the division race as they would travel to Indy in Week 15 to attempt to tie the Colts, although they would still trail Indianapolis in record against common opponents.

  • Even with the loss to Denver at home, Kansas City is still in the mix among the 7-5 teams and currently holds the No. 7 seed based on conference record, behind only Miami.

Based on how teams are performing, upcoming schedules and tiebreakers, here's how I see the season playing out for conference seeds:

AFC: 1) New England 2) Denver 3) Indianapolis 4) Cincinnati 5) Miami 6) San Diego

NFC: 1) Green Bay 2) Philadelphia 3) Seattle 4) New Orleans 5) Arizona 6) Detroit

Browns WR Josh Gordon will be 'full go' today versus Bills

After his eight-catch, 120-yard debut last week, the reins are going to come off of Josh Gordon today against the Buffalo Bills. That's what NFL.com's Albert Breer said this morning. He added that the Browns' dominant No. 1 wide receiver will be "full go" this afternoon.

You could argue that the reins were off of Gordon last week in his return from a suspension. Amid reports that he was going to be on the field for only 20-30 snaps versus Atlanta, he played 52, close to 70 percent of Cleveland's offensive plays. Quarterback Brian Hoyer might end up harming the Browns' chances by trying to force the ball to Gordon when he shouldn't, but Gordon's fantasy owners aren't complaining. He is back into high-end WR1 range again, regardless of the matchup.

Rex Ryan's bluster is indefatigable. At least it was until Monday anyway.

The Jets coach, on the heels of a tough, gross 16-13 loss to the Dolphins on Monday Night Football, finally looked beaten and broken when he stepped to the podium after the game.

Talking about his team's season, Rex called the Jets record "a joke."

"We missed a couple of field goals we don't normally miss. The blocked punt…it just wasn't our normal game on special teams," Rex said. "That's probably the difference in this game. I feel sick. Our guys played great for the most part in a lot of areas. We can't buy a win."

The joke comment was specifically about running back Chris Johnson (maybe he's a CJ fantasy owner??) and topping 100 yards.

"Chris Johnson did a tremendous job. We wanted to have some fresh backs at the end of the year and we got them," Rex said before pausing in rather sad fashion. "I can't believe we're 2-10. It's a joke."

Asked what he told his team after the game, Ryan wouldn't go into specifics but offered everyone is "hurting" before summing up his run in New York rather succinctly.

"I can't tell you. It's just…everybody in there is hurting," Rex said. "Hurting for each other, for our fans. We'd do anything for a win.

"It wasn't meant to be, I guess."

Poor Rex Ryan is totally defeated at this point. Poor Rex Ryan is totally defeated at this point. (USATSI)

Larry Sanders crosses over Anderson Varejao, dunks (video)

Larry Sanders is capable of producing a highlight – good or bad – but the Bucks center isn’t exactly known for crossing over anyone.

Maybe Anderson Varejao should have sat out an extra game.

Report: Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch might retire after this season

There were reports last summer that Marshawn Lynch was considering retirement. Obviously, he decided to stick around for 2014, but perhaps no longer? NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Sunday, citing sources familiar with Lynch's thinking, that the workhorse back "is weighing the possibility of retiring after this year."However, Rapoport adds that Lynch might stay in the league if Seattle's offensive line coach, Tom Cable, gets hired to be a head coach. Those two have a very close relationship, and Lynch could follow Cable to his new job, if he gets one. Cable was previously the head coach of the Raiders from 2008-10. He went 17-27.

It's already well known that Lynch probably won't be playing in Seattle after this season. The Seahawks are likely to cast him off due to contract and locker room concerns. Will he be playing anywhere? Well, we all know Lynch marches to the beat of his own drum, and anything he chooses to do wouldn't be too surprising because he is such a unique and private personality.Lynch doesn't have a ton of dynasty value since he will turn 29 next spring and has taken on monstrous workloads every year since 2011. Robert Turbin is his backup right now, but everyone wants to see what the very talented Christine Michael could do in a starting role. We will probably see that in Seattle next year, no matter if Lynch leaves on his own or is forced out.
