Embattled NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent met with 11 former players Tuesday to discuss ways to improve the league's personal conduct policy, the Associated Press reports.

The 11 players included Hall of Famer Mike Singletary as well as Matt Birk, Eddie Mason, Patrick Kerney, Willie McGinest, Roman Oben, Marty Lyons, Charles Way, Tony Paige, Scott Turner and Robert Porcher.

This is the first of several such meetings that will be held, according to the AP.

Goodell has come under fire in recent weeks after he bungled Ray Rice's domestic violence case.

The commissioner held a widely panned press conference last Friday in which he satated: "We will re-examine, enhance and improve all of our current programs, and then we'll do more." This includes the personal conduct policy.

The NFL announced on two weeks ago that former FBI Director Robert Mueller will head an independent investigation into what the league knew and when they knew it regarding Rice punching his soon-to-be wife in the face and knocking her unconscious in an Atlantic City hotel last February. Giants owner John Mara and Steelers president Art Rooney II will oversee the investigation.
