Johnny Manziel wants to help Jameis Winston. (USATSI) Johnny Manziel wants to help Jameis Winston. (USATSI)

Johnny Manziel and Jameis Winston have a lot in common. For one, they both have a Heisman Trophy. For another? They're both good at making headlines.

Winston was the talk of the sports world in late April after he left a grocery store with some crab legs without paying. Johnny Football then swiped the national headlines back when he showed up at a party in Texas on an inflatable swan.

There's been more recent escapades, too: Manziel was photographed rolling money in a bathroom in July. Then there's Winston, who was suspended for Florida State's Sept. 20 game against Clemson after he yelled an obscene phrase in public that you probably shouldn't yell out in public.

Both players are under a perpetual microscope, and Manziel said on Friday that he wants to help Winston in any way he can.

"I'll reach out to him and say a little something to him," Manziel said, via the Cleveland Plain-Dealer.

However, Manziel won't reach out just yet, "More than anything it's the middle of the season now and I don't think he wants anybody that's not on his squad interfering," he said.

The Browns quarterback said the last time he talked to Winston was at the ESPYs in July.

"Jameis is a guy I've had a good relationship with and want to help him in as many ways as I can," Manziel said. "For him right now, just try to let as much time pass by to try to let some of these things blow over and worry about the position [the Seminoles] are in as the best team in the country and worry about football in the ACC. And really, I think everything else will be OK."

There's a burden that comes along returning to school after winning the Heisman, a burden that Manziel experienced and Winston is learning about each and every week.

"It's heavier than the trophy is itself," Manziel said. "I think there is a lot of responsibility, a lot of scrutiny has come with it now over the past two years as well, the past two to five years. That's going to come with it obviously and it's a lot of weight to have on your shoulders, but it's part of what comes with winning that trophy for sure."

Manziel had one final thought on Winston that probably also applies to himself. "He's continuing to grow up. He's a young guy, too," Manziel said. "Really I think he'll figure it out."

Bengals WR Marvin Jones tweaks ankle, doesn't practice Wednesday

There must be some sort of mysterious, invisible force that doesn't want Bengals wide receiver Marvin Jones to play football this season.First, an ankle injury forced him to miss the start of training camp. Then, a few days after being given the green light to practice, Jones broke his left foot, which required surgery. At long last, he was expected to make his season debut this Sunday night against the Patriots, but Jones missed today's practice after tweaking his ankle.

Jeez. Maybe Jones heals quickly, but odds are he will probably miss yet another week. The 3-0 Bengals don't need to rush him back. Jones remains a very interesting stash or low-cost trade target after scoring 10 touchdowns last season while playing less than half of the snaps. Assuming his latest injury is only a tweak, Jones should finally be on the field relatively soon. But he needs to stop walking underneath ladders.
